Still no Styx…..

I didn't like them, Foreigner, Journey and R.E.O. Speedwagon in their prime.

I've grown to appreciate the last three, but I never got the Styx thing.

"Mr. Roboto" and "Too Much Time On My Hands" are terrible.

Joy Division/New Order

New Order is my favorite group of all time.  Love them even more than The Beatles, Stones, Zepplin, Guns and Roses etc....

Joy Division was the group until Ian Curtis killed himself and then they changed the name to New Order.

I didn't know this about Joy Division and New Order. I've listened to a little Joy Division but not New Order. I'll have to check them out.

It's good to see a band like Joy Division get some recognition. I wish they'd give more nods to punk, bands like The Germs, Black Flag, X, the Dead Kennedys and even the Butth0le Surfers, who destroyed the musical landscape with some of the most original music in history.

Joy Division was the original group, but the lead singer, Ian Curtis committed suicide and the other members changed the name to New Order.  If you like Joy Division, you would like New Order even more!

Definitely Jethro Tull, Rory Gallagher and The Smiths. I saw Rory Gallagher as a small venue years ago. Phenominal.

I think Robert Plant more than deserves to be in as a solo artist.

So much more deserving than Stevie Nicks, who had one OK album and a handful of hit songs.

Best lead guitarist I ever saw live but has never even been nominated since he first became elgible in 1997.

His omission is certainly not from a lack of talent or popularity (he sold 30 million records worldwide). Plus he made Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He never had a "hit" record but that should not be fatal to making the cut.

Another band I think ought to be in is Status Quo. They never got too big in the United States, but they've sold 118 million albums, and about a half dozen of their albums are absolutely great. By comparison, Van Halen has sold 80 million albums.

It's good ol' boogie rock, like Foghat, only way better.

Amen, brutha. Joy Division has always been one of my favorites, they just didn't release enough music. New Order is good, but definitely did not capture me the way JD did.

The punk and metal bands deserving of the HOF are myriad, and I've pretty much given up hope. Add the Misfits and NOFX to that list. Can you imagine Jello Biafra's HOF speech?

I'm pretty much over Las Vegas, but this place might be enough to get me to make a trip.

It wouldn't be punk rock if they showed up to accept their awards and give a speech.

Fear was one of my favorite punk bands, but I don't think they belong in the HOF. I also loved the Big Boys, and maybe they should get in because they invented funk punk, leading to the Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine.

X is the one who really ought to be in there. The recently put out a new album with the original lineup, and it kicks ass from start to finish.

Foghat was a lot more than just a boogie band IMO, but I digress...

Status Quo did have one big US hit "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" although viewed from what they did afterwards it does seem like an outlier.

Fun Fact:

Status Quo was the obvious inspiration for the band Spinal Tap in the film of the same name (although the producers/writers of the film deny that).

Fully agree about X. Their last couple of albums have been awesome and Los Angeles is one of the greatest punk records ever. Did you know they did the Wild Thing cover featured in Major League?

NOFX very much should be in. Their longevity and influence on the genre are basically unmatched, and their musical, lyrical and technical prowess has always been underappreciated. I appreciate Jann Wenner but his influence over the HOF has kinda fuct up the membership.

Yes I did. I saw X twice, once on the "More Fun" tour and again when they had a different guitarists.

:jealous: I wasn't able to see them the last time I had a chance, IIRC the nearest show was in Chicago on a weeknight and I couldn't make it work. Too many bands skip coming to MN on major tours. They hit Chicago, maybe Milwaukee, KC, St. Louis, then off to Denver or Dallas or wherever. Too far north, I guess. Hell, even Des Moines sometimes get shows that don't go to the twin cities.

I agree but they had a bunch of things working against them...

I think a lot of their early work was too ahead of its time. While "Los Angeles" "White Girl" and "Blue Spark" got a lot of Alternative/Indie radio airplay and hold up well today, they were out of step with most rock fans in the 80s were looking for, to be a success.

None of the their albums ever cracked the US Billboard Top 50 (Under The Big Black Sun charted the best at #76). None of their singles made the Top 25 nationally.

They were a local L.A. band and my friends and I thought, when we first heard "Burning House of Love'' off of "Ain't Love Grand" in 1985 that this was going to be the hit that finally broke them on the national level. But it was not to be, as the tune, while starting out fast, inexplicably stalled at #27 on Billboard Hot 100 (and this was even after an American Bandstand appearance).

"Ain't Love Grand" was where I bailed because it sounded obvious they were trying to make a hit record. I haven't listened to it in years. I'll have to give it another listen with fresh ears. I do love their most recent album. It's got that old flash to it.

Exene looks the best she has in years. Seems like she had some mental-health issues there for awhile and looked like a frumpy old grandma.

2 things I did not know before this post: That Squis has punk in his musical oeuvre, and that X actually had a billboard top 40 hit. I will guarantee you my local top 40 station never aired that song, even once.

"The Hungry Wolf" video got heavy rotation on MTV, and that's where I discovered them. I went right out and bought the first three albums.

"More Fun" is my favorite.

I love the Smiths and saw Oasis on their first tour at a smallish venue. My buddies didn't like them, but i thought they were great and knew they'd be huge.

I'm going to pop on New Order while I'm out and about here in a few.

uuuuugggggghhhhhhh. Why? I don't know which band is more annoying and overhyped, Oasis or the Smiths. Both fronted by a some of the biggest douchebags the rock n roll world has ever seen, which is a really high bar. Oasis had a few decent tunes, but they are all outweighed by the horror that is Wonderwall. And I reeeaaaaally hate the Smiths, and especially Morissey. I cannot say enough bad things about that pompous ass.

ETA: I do like that one Smiths song but can never remember the name. What time is Now? Something like that..

New Order is cool, though. Have you ever listened to Joy Division?

Morrissey's distinctive vocals/phrasing combined with his droll lyrics are an acquired taste.

He has always been a bit of a jerk and his hateful, bigoted views of recent years only added to many folks already negative perception of him (to the point that when I post any of his solo work on Twitter I almost feel like I have to add some of disclaimer).

So you cancel an entire band and its 45-year history just because Dave Grohl, one of the all-time greatest drummers, played on one of the 15 studio albums.

Talk about tossing out the entire maternity ward with the bathwater.

🤣

No. But I’m not the one that tossed them.  History did.
