Hot take: jersey number aesthetics are stupid

Recommended Posts

I keep stumbling on these stories with fans and media with strong opinions on jersey numbers.  Apparently Matthew golden wearing 22 and Mason Taylor wearing 46 is some kind of issue. Jersey number aesthetics are stupid.  If you care about that, perhaps the dozens of fashion weeks the fashion world seems to have is more appropriate for you.

Hopefully, if we acknowledge how dumb it is, we can end these discussions.

Not sure what is more of a waste of time, them having a problem with it or people posting about it on a fantasy football website.

The least waste of time has to be commenting on someone else's comment about someone having a problem with it on a fantasy football website.

I want to start a grass roots movement of awareness that it makes no sense.  Thank you for your support on this issue.

I'm confused... they don't like Golden wearing 22 because it's usually a corner-back's number?  Is that correct? If the league allows it, don't see why anyone would care.

I thought this was about retired numbers - which I've always disliked. The Yankees have retired so many numbers, they'll have to go triple-digits in the coming decades. Ridiculous.

The Gators retired Heisman Trophy winner Spurrier's #11 after he graduated. Years later when he became coach, Spurrier himself officially un-retired it. He thought numbers should never be retired because... they're just numbers.  God bless the Ole Ball Coach.

The sad thing is I can tell some of these media folks don't really care, but the flamboyant types that are all into how good a number supposedly looks bully them into adopting an opinion, and, of course, they just agree with the fashion-lover because who cares.  We have to end the bullying.

I'm ok with retiring numbers of players who make the NFL Hall of Fame.  The problem comes in when teams retire the numbers of their franchise Hall of Famers.  I mean, I understand it, but the problem is that the amount of numbers not available become significantly too high.  In basketball and hockey, it's not really problem because they have 15 roster players... baseball is close to football because they have 40, but the NFL has 58.  That's just too many.

The other problem that the NFL has is that it's very easy to quantify the justification of some players and number groupings, it's why they ran into the problem with their position numbers and opened up pretty much every number to anyone.

Spurier is right.  The reason being, he's not too full of himself.  He didn't have the same ego as others.

Im not old but call me old fashion.

I dont care for it.  Because old sets of numbers grouped players for easy identification.  If you are watching a game and see 53 make a SPT tackle you can easily ID that hey one of the backup LBers made that play.  Oh you see 22 catch a swing pass.  Is that a RB or a WR now?  For your own team you will get used to the numbers.  But its just an easier way of quickly deciphering the play.  Its not really about the look for me. But id be lying if I said 22 looked right on a WR.

To me people caring about jerseys and alternates/color scheme is goofier.  I couldnt care less about which jersey a team is wearing.  But im a male.

I like last names like He Hate Me on the back of the jersey. That way you really don't have an idea who made the play. Every time you say his name, everyone asks "Who?".
