Jim Beam Bourbon Halts Production

Jim Beam pauses production at main distillery as bourbon inventories rise

Popular Kentucky bourbon maker Jim Beam plans to pause production at its main distillery on January 1, according to the James B. Beam Distilling Co.

The decision comes as Kentucky faces an increasing supply of aging barrels and uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s trade wars.

Kentucky has an all-time high of 16.1 million aging barrels of bourbon in its warehouses, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association said in October. Distillers are paying for that supply, since the state charges taxes on aging barrels of spirits. Kentucky distillers paid $75 million in aging barrel taxes this year, up 27% from 2024, according to the trade group.

Jim Beam, which is owned by Suntory Global Spirits, intends to pause production at its main distillery on the James B. Beam campus in Clermont, Kentucky, while it invests “in site enhancements,” according to a company statement. It will continue distilling at its Fred B. Noe craft distillery in Clermont and the Booker Noe distillery in Boston, Kentucky.

Whiskey and spirit makers have had to deal with retaliatory tariffs from the trade war sparked by Trump’s tariffs, and with consumers pulling back on discretionary spending amid an affordability crisis.

FYI: Suntory Global Spirits is owned by Suntory Holdings, a major Japanese multinational beverage conglomerate, which acquired Beam Inc. in 2014, with the spirits arm rebranded from Beam Suntory to Suntory Global Spirits in 2024, making it a Japanese-owned global spirits company with U.S. operations.

Exactly!

The trade fallout between the United States and Canada has also impacted whiskey and spirit makers. In March, Canadian officials banned American spirits from stores, a rule that is still in place in some provinces.

That means they've produced more than needed. Who gives a fock about multi-billion dollar companies. The people that drink it have it available. There is not a problem here.

Suntory Global Spirits reported $5.6 billion in annual revenue for 2023 (net sales) and has a stated goal of reaching $10 billion in sales by 2030.

I'm sorry I said it if it means you're going to edit out the pertinent part of my post. But, if I had not said an insult, the rest of my post would probably still get ignored

I'll try again.

Did the policies of Donald Trump cause the pause in Jim Beam production? And/or the decreased sales from the liquor manufacturers to retailers?

How is this bad for U.S. citizens?

Yes.  Boycotts and tariffs have decreased sales and revenue.  Before you ask that question and insult people you should know the answer.  It is a tip.

Tariffs certainly had an impact, but not as much as the TDSers want you to believe.

Here was the % of whiskey purchased in Canada by country of origin in 2024:

·

  • 64.8% of whisky sold in Canada was Canadian brands

  • 18.6% Scotch

  • 10.4% American

  • 5.9% Irish

  • 0.3% other

I think the tariffs or the response to them has caused the problem. It is bad for those that are no longer working there.

Also, people are not able to spend as freely since prices of so many things have gone up.

Yes, I guess I do blame Trump’s policies for this.

Fine and fair.   Probably deeper than just Trump, but if that's who you wanna blame, I won't fight you on it.

Canada imported $221M in US Booze in 2024.  For 2025, estimates are $33M.  Almost $200M lost in sales due to boycotts and tariffs.  That's gonna have an effect.

Brown Foreman had a 61% drop in revenue from Canada in 2025 vs prior year.
