TimHauck 3,465 Posted 16 hours ago Non-political thread! Got the kids one of these for Christmas. Don’t know much about it yet but the one we have actually seems quite user friendly and it’s pretty freaking cool. Anybody else have one? Can’t remember if it was here or another forum that someone was telling people to buy stock in “DDD” like 10 years ago. Looks like that stock tanked but they had the right idea, these things seem pretty popular now.

jerryskids 7,212 Posted 14 hours ago What did you get? What did it cost? What can it do? I've done some 3D printing on commercial units, actually worked for a company that sold them and sold services on them (I wasn't in that side of the business, though). I'd consider a home unit to make some prototypes for ideas I have for my laryngectomy stoma.

I'd consider a home unit to make some prototypes for ideas I have for my laryngectomy stoma. I got the Bambu Lab A1. I think it was $400 for the printer + the “AMS” which is the thing that can hold 4 spools of filament so that you can print multiple colors, + about $200 on a bunch of filament (seems the best best is to get off-brand from Amazon). I did some research but didn’t go crazy, from what I gather the Bambu brand seems to be the most reliable. They have a little more expensive model that is popular as well but the one I got is supposedly good for beginners (and so far I’d agree with that, their app makes it fairly easy). I just set it up 2 nights ago, yesterday was my son’s birthday so we let him pick the first print and he wanted a dragon, it took 14 hours but came out pretty good. We had people over for his birthday and everyone was amused by it. Fortunately the weather was beautiful so I opened a window, I’ve heard mixed opinions on how bad the fumes are for your health. Today I’ve mostly printed some accessories for the printer itself like a box for the stuff that came with it, I also plan to print some things for storage/organization like a stand for our Nintendo switch controllers and drawer organizers for art supplies, and of course toys for the kids. Thanks, I'll look into it. Fumes are a concern with my stoma -- I don't presume it's specific to the Bambu, but rather maybe it's not something I could use in my house. Well, that and my wife might kill me if I tried to set it up in my house. If it's something that's easy to set up such that I could use it outside when I want to print something, that would probably solve both problems. Anyway, thanks for the info. Strike 6,045 Posted 13 hours ago I have one. It's pretty old. I've had it for about 5 years. My buddy had one and he does some really cool stuff with his. After him demoing some stuff I bought the same model. I've toyed with it here and there but haven't devoted the requisite amount of time to it to really become proficient. But, as old as it is, it requires a bit more work than most of the newer units. While it's theoretically capable of doing wi-fi I've never been able to get it to work right so I have to take any 3-d prints I want to do to it manually after copying them to a micro-sd card. Not the most difficult thing in the world but a bit inconvenient in today's world. There are other quirks and inconveniences that have probably kept me from totally embracing the technology. But it was pretty cheap and when I do put the effort in I've printed a few cool things. At some point I'd like to get a more modern printer that will probably be a bit bigger as well and support newer types of materials. Enjoy.
Hawkeye21 2,458 Posted 2 hours ago My wife teaches a tech class and they have a 3D printer. They are pretty cool and you can do a lot of fun stuff with them. I think it's a great gift for the kids. Allows them to be creative and opens them up to new ideas.
Drizzay 760 Posted 2 hours ago I have no idea what i would even make. My buddy makes mini replica NFL and Star Wars helmets. I am just not into that type of thing. I would need to make something functional.
