nobody 2,040 Posted January 28, 2009 So, I'm looking at all the money the Fed is printing up and all I keep thinking is runaway inflation. First question: Do you think the dollar is going to lose substantial value soon? Let's define substantial value as 50% and soon as 2 years. Second question: What is a good way to protect oneself from such a beast? Would gold ETFs like GLD and IAU be effective or do you actually want to have actually precious metals buried in your backyard? Also, let's assume the dollar completely collapses. How do you protect yourself from that? Real Estate? Foreign stock? Precious metals? All of the above? I don't want ot be in some gold ETF and then have it go out of business because the dollar lost 99% of it's value and even though I did the right thing, the company running my ETF went bankrupt because it couldn't get credit to support it's operating expenses or something crazy like that. RLLD 3,455 Posted January 28, 2009 So, I'm looking at all the money the Fed is printing up and all I keep thinking is runaway inflation. First question: Do you think the dollar is going to lose substantial value soon? Let's define substantial value as 50% and soon as 2 years. I think the dollar will continue to lose value in the coming years, just how much remains to be seen because we cannot know how far the Fed will go, or when all those dollars we have been exporting will come home to roost. I think the only way we see a 30%+ loss is if the government fully nationalizes banks, the dollar stops being the backing currency for trade, or China and Japan start selling off their dollars( or perhaps buying up all our stuff with them). Regardless, the inevitability of our future is a steadily declining currency with the potential for hyperinflation long term. Second question: What is a good way to protect oneself from such a beast? Would gold ETFs like GLD and IAU be effective or do you actually want to have actually precious metals buried in your backyard? Metals will remain a strong hedge against a declining currency, but will have bubble/bust times, and as such their price might make them a poor investment for stretches of time. The government actually forbids the populace from holding gold in anything other than jewelry-type stuff, you are actually forbidden by law from holding like an ingot in a safe somewhere.....it was pivotal to do this in order to arrive at our fiat currency Also, let's assume the dollar completely collapses. IMHO.......the best protection you can pursue is to invest in either the Euro, Yuan, or even the Real.....once the dollar starts to falter, all the purchasing power will exist in foreign currency; if the Euro becomes the backing for trade, THAT would be the one in which to invest, because it has the best potential for actually doing it, and then the Chinese move their peg from the dollar to the Euro....and then we are quite literally focked....I am coming to believe that this is less of "if" so much as "when"..... No floors to clean at the hospital tonight? Not sure what you mean by the pot/kettle comment, but I was just curious based on your recent posts. It seems like you are already functioning like a PA, so what is the advantage of pursuing the training? Monetary?
