New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources confirmed to ESPN's Michael Smith.

Promoted Herm to "fired" maybe.... What has Herm proven he can do in the NFL? Since this is a bottom feeder team, it will be interesting to see if the mythical Pioli is for real or just a product of the Patriots.

Pioli is a master capologist and a brilliant business man.

He's a great front office guy and KC will be better off with him.

As a Pats fan, I hate to see him go.

 

But I'm telling myself that Pioli's real value to NE was as a master capologist.

Pioli was more valuable to NE a few years ago when the cap was "voodoo" and a lot tougher to handle.

Managing the cap today isn't such a mystery in the NFL, they've caught up.

Pioli was far ahead of the curve, but the cap has gone up substantially each year and NFL execs have learned to manage it better.

Now there's even some question as to whether there will even BE a cap after next year.

 

Don't get me wrong, I hate to see him go. Front offices are as important as players when it comes to winning SuperBowls.

I'm sure he took the job because of the opportunity to be with one team for a long time, not to mention some young talent they acquired in last year's draft. He has something to build on, except he'll need to decide on a QB this off-season. Good luck with that.

For those of us who have been following the team closely, this is no surprise. Calk Hunt has been interested in developing a cohesive front office team, that could be in place for many years. The fact that Pioli and acting President Thum hit it off seems to have been key for both sides. The question of the moment is what next.

 

Clark Hunt has been plain that he wants to give Herm Edwards a year to do things his way. Some see this as a put up or shut up situation. Regardless, even Herm says that the bulk of the talent aquisition phase is done. Now they can focus more on the deveolping the talent on hand. That being said, it seems likely that the team will be in the market for some veteran help. Player like Jonathoan Vilma and Julius Peppers are likely unavailable, but Channing Crowder and many 2nd line free agents are possible sources of "Instant Experience."

 

In any event, it is good news. WE have defeated Saruman. Sauron is next.

yeah, this is a new project for him after helping shape the current pats. i agree with michael smith who said the scenario in new england was basically the "ed mcmahon routine". he did certainly help out in the cap strategy and talent building, but final decisions are and will probably always be belichick. much like thomas dimitroff [sp?] finding a new project in "bad hot-lanta", pioli will find a good challenge to rebuild the chiefs.

Here's my take on this.....

1. Probably not Thigpen as #1 QB, but I don't see them drafting one with their 3rd overall pick.

2. Larry should go. I've got a signed autograph jersey framed, hanging over my desk right now, and I still want him gone. I don't think Pioli will stand for the 'tude he brings without performing.

3. Gonzalez will stay. If he didn't go last year, it's not worth him moving for the KC revolution that's going to take place in the next 2 years.

4. Free agents are going to turn this season upside down. I think they'll get some awesome draft picks, but I think most of the impact will be from free agency, not the draft (unlike this year).

I don't think you have to determine right now whether or not Thigpen is the future. But you have to add another QB to this roster, be it free agency or the draft. Then Quinn Gray is in position to be No. 3, while Thiggy and the addition battle it out in training camp, let the best man have the starting job.

Of the need areas, LB is by far the easiest to address through free agency. While Julus Peppers is technically a FA, there is virtually no way he leaves. Vilma is also likely out of reach. However, Channing Crowder and others could get a look.

 

One of the rumors that is getting play right now, is that the team will release Herm Edwards and bring in Steve Spagnuolo from the Giants. That would retain the 4-3 alignment they have drafted for, and bring in a disciplinarian with an attack mentality. Given the Chief's stability of in the front office through the years, and the wealth of largely undeveloped talent on the Chief's roster, I can see him going for the opportunity.

Copngrats to Pioli. He will be missed here in NE, but he deserves a chance to show that he is more than just one of Belichick's minions.

I think Crabtree goes to Seattle right after KC. Since Bradford is out, the chances of a QB falling to them dropped sharply, so this is possible. However, I still lean to Curry, the safe pick, or a DE.
