yostevo 0 Posted March 15, 2006 This stems from the initial "class/meeting" that Harringtion had with Martz. Needless to say, it didn't go well. Harrington wasn't buying Martz's approach to blowing him apart and starting from scratch. Reminds me of the movie "Days of Thunder". Robert Duvall asks Tom Cruise to try 50 laps "his way" and Joey Harrington just won't set his ego aside to do so. Naturally, Martz tells Millen "I can't teach him anything" and Millen promptly signs Kitna. They would have signed another QB either way, but I'm sure that Martz helped pull the trigger a bit sooner after that meeting. Joe must go. The writing is on the wall. I don't care if Joey becomes an all pro somewhere else, it's not going to happen here period. Cut your losses, accept your mistakes, and do what's right. It's the only way this rudderless ship will find some resemblence of direction.

It's the only way this rudderless ship will find some resemblence of direction. martz went into that meeting confident he knew what it would take for harrington to be successful. the twist? harrington may not have enough mental gas left in the tank to follow martz down that path. if not, he will be gone. martz will have 100 percent of joey or no joey at all. pretty simple. J.Martin? As what, the 3rd string QB? Martin SUCKS and is about 37 years old! If Harrington blows this chance with Martz, he deserves to join R. Guest stevejohnson Posted March 15, 2006 Martz was not a very good HEAD coach but is still widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in football. He has taken several QBs NOBODY else wanted and made them Pro Bowlers. His gameplans have been copied by almost every team in the league! Mean while Joey Harrington has been a complete bust! You obviously don't know much about Martz. If Kitna or Harrington can't perform in Martz's system and things aren't looking good, he'll ask for Jamie Martin no question about it. Martin can do the one thing that most QB's in this league can't do, understand the Mike Martz complicated offense. Tim

Mike MacGregor 20 Posted March 15, 2006 Guys like Martin and Todd Collins are closer to an assistant coach than QB in that they are good signings for the team, but one hopes they will never, even see the field. I agree with steve that Martin is horrible, but the Lions may very well sign him. Collins just followed his old OC to the Redskins on a 2 year deal.

Dude I know enough about Martz to know that when Jamie Martin gets his yearly call from an NFL team, it's going to be the Lions this time around. As soon as one of the Lions QB's go down, or maybe even before, he'll be getting a call. Martz loves him and has 100% confidence in him. Watch and see.... IronFistIFFL 0 Posted March 15, 2006 http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/index.s...7070.xml&coll=1 From the Article Linked above: The Lions aren't necessarily in a time crunch here. There's no financial issue because the deadline on Harrington's $4 million roster bonus isn't until June 15. My guess is that the Kitna vs. Harrington vs. Martz (And apparently we're throwing J. Martin into the mix ) situation will be resolved by the 15th of June.

yojimbo81 0 Posted March 15, 2006 Harrington is entering his 5th year as a pro with his 4th headcoach. The Lions have been a sinking ship since 2001. None of it is Harrington's fault. "Jeff Garcia will save the team" all the Lions fans said. What a bust he was. We've had nothing but soft coaches since Bobby Ross. Marty and Mooch are pathetic coaches with no balls. They let themselves be run over by cocky recievers who have never given 100% on the field. If Joey is cut he will become a quality QB on a team where people actually know how to manage a team. The Joey haters are suckers for thinking he's the problem. Bring in Leinert, Young, Cutler or any free agent. Any one of them will fail because, though it pains me to say, the Lions are a pathetic franchise. This is the same organization that ran the greatest runningback out of football. The Fords are atrocious owners and Millen couldn't hire a decent coach if his life depended on it. Here's to another 6-10 season.

Know Doubt 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Hello, long time lurker, first time caller... Two things are bugging me here. 1) Who in the blazes is stevejohnson? He joins in July 2004 and posts like five times, now the sites back up and he's all over the place! The crazy thing is I agree with his thoughts like 85% of the time. Why has he waited this long? Did he change jobs and now has time to post? 2) While I can agree with the "why Joey failed" arguments, it has left me wondering. Kordell Stewart had like 3-4 straight years of having to learn a completely New Offense Every year due to getting a New OC and yet all you guys could do was rip him after he had that one good year(97 I think it was, lost to Denver in the AFC Championship that year). See you can tell I don't post alot because I can't figure out how to use the emotion coms

I don't care if I'm in the minority on that one either. He just screams "Player/team x sucks, lol" and I have yet to see him lay out an argument of any sort. I'll give Scooter a hard time but I'll read his posts because in all his long winded vebiage, he'll occasionally make a solid point or two. 2) I want to see Joey with a fresh start. I'm not convinced he'll ever be a "stud", nor am I convinced he can't be a quality quarterback. For the people saying Martz was a terrible head coach, his record in the regular season was 51-29 (.638) and 3-4 in the playoffs. Far from terrible, though I agree he likely is a better offensive coordinator than head honcho.

Deadpool 0 Posted March 25, 2006 From Here The Detroit Free Press reports some have said QB Joey Harrington sabotaged his appearance at Lions QB school, engineering his way out of town with uncooperative behavior. Some have said he was just unenthusiastic as he realized it wasn't going to work in Detroit. The truth lies in the middle. Harrington came to QB school with good intentions, but he also had mixed emotions. As the week went on, things fell apart. The last day went badly. In the end, Harrington didn't feel he could win with the Lions, and the Lions didn't feel they could win with him. This account is based on interviews with several people close to the situation. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information and because Harrington has not spoken for himself yet. He has been on vacation in Southeast Asia and unavailable for comment. Harrington flew from his Oregon home to the Detroit area Sunday, March 5. He was upbeat and optimistic because of the support the Lions had given him. President Matt Millen said Feb. 21 the Lions were approaching the off-season with him as their starter, and HC Rod Marinelli agreed. Marinelli and OC Mike Martz spoke positively about his potential afterward. Harrington intended to give it his best shot with an open mind. Still, he felt some uncertainty. The Lions had a new coaching staff, but they still had most of the same players -- a number of whom had not supported him. When Harrington drove into Lions headquarters that Monday, he experienced a lot of negative feelings because of the environment. His first meeting with Martz went well, but his first meeting with Marinelli did not. Marinelli told Harrington he had to be all in or all out; Harrington couldn't make that commitment because of his concerns about team chemistry. After a full day's work, Harrington went home and studied his playbook. He told people Martz was jovial and nice and knew a lot about offense. Harrington put in another full day's work Tuesday. He hurt his back. He went home and studied his playbook again. He told people Marinelli was a down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is kind of guy. He still seemed upbeat and thought he would be back later in the month for off-season conditioning. But Wednesday, the last day of QB school, was different. Harrington didn't break down plays well on the board. He didn't appear to pay attention. He didn't take notes. His mind seemed elsewhere, and something happened with Martz -- what exactly is unclear. Harrington did not endear himself to the coaches. Marinelli had talked about wanting players with passion. Harrington wasn't showing any. Whatever his intent, he was showing he didn't want to be there. Afterward, Millen talked to Harrington often, and Harrington talked to the coaches somewhat. But things couldn't be patched up. Harrington didn't want to be a quitter, but he told the Lions he could win in the NFL, just not in Detroit. Martz truly thought Harrington was talented, but the coaches didn't want a quarterback who wasn't confident he could lead their team.
