HTH 95 Posted March 23, 2006 From SI.com Mike Vanderjagt, who was not welcomed back to Indianapolis this offseason despite being the most accurate kicker in NFL history, has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, an NFL source confirmed to SI.com. Terms of his deal with Dallas were not known, but Vanderjagt visited the Cowboys on Wednesday and agreed in principle to a contract that is expected to be completed and announced at some point Thursday. Vanderjagt, who will be 36 on Friday, spent the past eight seasons in Indianapolis, and was 23- of-25 in field goal attempts in 2005, with a long of 48 yards. But that accuracy did not count for much in an AFC divisional playoff game against the Steelers when he badly missed a 46-yard attempt on the final drive. The Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl as the conference's No. 6 seed, while the top-seeded Colts, who were started 13-0, dealt with another bitter playoff disappointment. Vanderjagt is the second headline-name kicker to switch teams this week, following Adam Vinatieri's signing with the Colts. The former Patriots star became the league's highest paid kicker when he received a five-year deal to replace Vanderjagt. The contract calls for a $3.5 million signing bonus, and is worth $7.5 million in the first three years. The acquisition of Vanderjagt ends the Cowboys' revolving door at kicker. Dallas had three different kickers in 2005, and the 9-7 Cowboys lost three games by three points or less, narrowly missing the playoffs. Dallas kickers were just 20-of-28 overall last season, missing three from 38 yards or less.
kraziness 0 Posted March 23, 2006 This is a great signing by Dallas (unless you think Vandy is dirty and missed the kick on purpose in the playoffs). The guy can kick for length and accuracy, he missed on one clutch kick (in my memory) but is otherwise the best kicker in the league. He should be the highest paid kicker in the league, it was knee-jerk for the Colts to let him go.
Savage Beast 1 Posted March 23, 2006 This is good news for the Cowboys. I can't remember the last time we had a kicker that we did not sign from the NFL scrap heap.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 23, 2006 This is good news for the Cowboys. I can't remember the last time we had a kicker that we did not sign from the NFL scrap heap. Actually, we never have not gone that route. The only thing different is that (back in the day) we had Steve Hoffman to mold whatever we had into something servicable. I'm very much on board with signing a big name kicker - but it's still all going to boil down to what our offensive line does.
mozzy84 0 Posted March 23, 2006 no more revolving kickers in dallas, good move.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 23, 2006 The Ticket in Dallas is saying it looks like a 3-year deal, bout $2 mil a year.
Pokey55 0 Posted March 23, 2006 That's not a bad signing. I would have preferred Adam V. but at least it's not Cortez. Vanderjagt is consistent although I wonder two things. 1-will kicking outdoors have an effect on his consistency and 2-if I remember right, he's pretty bad a kickoffs (?). I know they signed Cortez in Indy late last season just to handle that duty. Do we have someone to handle that? Or is it not really much of an issue?
Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 23, 2006 Kicking inside Texas Stadium is really no different that kicking inside a dome - there is no "wind" issue there.

I'm sure he didn't miss on purpose and what many fail to understand is that he only missed a tying field goal whose to say what would happen on the kickoff or overtime. So Pittsburgh gets the ball and marches down and kicks a field goal and wins you don't know. My point is Vandy didn't lose the game he lost an opportunity to stay alive. Deadpool 0 Posted March 23, 2006 When kicking coach Steve Hoffman was there, he had no problem finding someone that he could mold into a decent, dependable kicker. Hoffman definitely earned his money. For years, Dallas never paid more than the absolute minimum for a kicker. Richie Cunningham Lin Elliott Tim Seder Billy Cundiff Chris Boniol Ken Willis When Parcells came in, he decided that Hoffman was not a neccesisity, so he let him go. So we've had to endure Cundiff going down the tubes, and then Jose Cortez. Had Matt Bryant not gotten hurt last year during training camp, he probably would have won the kicking job and Vandy would not have been signed. Oh well, I'm just glad to finally see a dependable kicker on the roster.

mggoilers 0 Posted March 23, 2006 I like the signing. the last few years 30-40 yarders have been an adventure, so this is a definite upgrade. As for the kickoffs, I'm not sure what happened to Vandy. Like 2 years ago, he handled the kickoff duties and he always reached the endzone...my guess is a groin injury or something. I like it, I hope he can kick in the Meadowlands and Philly. He's from Canada, so he should be able to handle the bad weather.

It has everything to do with him running his mouth for 3 years solid.

We have a winner.

He cant do kick offs and anything beyond 40 yards is a gamble. He had alot fewer chances beyond 40yards for a reason. He is still a good kicker bet he isnt top 5-6 anymore. I see him everyweek..He is not the same.
49ER MAN 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Vanderjagt is an upgrade from what they had at kicker, which was not much to say the least. Yeah, he is not great at kickoffs but he's the most accurate kicker in NFL history, regular season anyway. I'm surprised the Pack didn't make more of an effort to sign him seeing as Longwell left for the Vikes. I guess they now look at Edinger, who coincidentally beat them twice last year with game winning field goals. I guess the Pack thought why spend big money on a kicker. Well, that theory might cost them a few games this year.

Ohhh, are we a little sensitive hear, I must have struck a nerve. I'm not a crybaby and I'm not anti-Dallas, I just see a pattern. Both signings are upgrades and will help the team this year but they are what they are. Are saying they aren't?
