Will Reggie pull an Eli.......

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen this discussed yet, so if it has... lets do it again.

Have any of you considered the possibility that Bush will go Eli on Houston? I can think of any number of reasons why a 1st pick would want to avoid a team on its way down even lower... Bush has not shown signs of the arrogance in which Eli pulled his stunt, but you have to say, Eli didn't show it before draft day either.. at least not publicly. So if you were Bush, would you pull an Eli?? AFterall, the precedence has been set and there is now a script to follow.

Eli (and/or his father) repeatedly said that he wouldn't play for San Diego, and wanted to play for New York, before the draft.

Yes.. as the Draft approached the message went out, but it wasn't loud and clear until a few weeks before. We are now getting into that time frame with Bush. USC's workout is this week or next and the Texans have a dinner planned before the workout to meet with him, that is why I am bringing this up now. Houston does not offer a great place for him so I am curious to see if he will do the same thing.

I think chances are like 30-40% he does it..... or says something to them that makes them consider young further, or trade down.

Biggest problem is that Houston would just not draft him. His position hurts him in this. Bluechip QBs can do whatever they want, or at least thats the general idea.

As a DD owner, man i can wish.

He's being touted ahead of two bluechips in Young and Leinart and of the next coming of Jesus himself according to some jock-jockey's. If he has that much juice going in, does he have the cajones to use it.

Say what you will about the Eli situation, and I have, it took major moxy to do what he did.

It doesn't take any moxy to be a crybaby biatch.

Bush won't do that to Houston...they are obviously taking steps to make that team better by completely overhauling the coaching staff, signing a veteran like Flanagan to take over at center and lead the offensive line, and making the pending trade for Moulds. The new coaching staff is actually making moves to address their problems rather than ignore them.

Lets not forget that the #1 pick is allowed to sign a contract before the draft. The NFL did this a few years ago to save them the embarassment of having the #1 pick hold-out, not that it changed much for say...Cedric Benson.

You can bet that the Texans will recieve contract proposals from those three player's agents. It could come down to which agent makes the best deal. All the players have incentive in being taken #1 and want to be. The Texans are in a great bargaining situation now, and it only lessens after they make their pick. All parties have good reason to sign.

I don't think they can actually sign a contract, but teams can agree to terms with players.

When Eli as drafted back in 2004, he looked at the Chargers organization and proclaimed he didn't want to play there. I even remember saying to a few people I wouldn't want to play there either because at that point, it seemed to me the Chargers were not serious in putting a winning product on the field.

The Texans are making moves to upgrade their team, something that the Chargers did not do when they drafted Eli in 04. I don't believe Bush would hold out and not to play for the Texans but then again you never know.

He's already been asked point blank and said "he would love to play in Houston". He even made a joke that he's excited that there is "no state income tax in Texas".

Reggie has class, and will be a nice cornerstone for the NEW look Texans!

Carr - check

DD - check

AJ - check

Putzier - check

Mathis - check

MOULDS - on the way

BUSH - on the way

Gary Kubiak led offense! - check!

Mark my words Texans players will be a FF player's dream next year. They will score and score and have to keep scoring b/c they defense will still suck! And just look at all those weapons we'll have!

yeah, you still need an O line to bust holes open and make time for carr to get off a pass. til then, i'll be suspect on the texans

 Not with that line

they were horrible in pass protection, but pretty good running the ball. 15th in the league with all the injuries that line had, and all position juggling is very respectable. With everyone healthy, Flanagan on the interior, and Kubiak bringing some real coaching there, Houston can easily have a top 10 rushing attack next year with DD.

Why wouldn't he want to play for Houston?

Team has been going backwards for several years now, they have no O line and a questionable Defense. Their QB gets beat up more than an ugly stepchild.... there are worse places, but there are plenty better ones.

Sorry but Vinc Yung is not even close to blue chip

Oh yes.. hes no Brett Favre uh?

Give it up DaveJ. It's not going to happen. Besides the fact that Bush has said he'd be willing to play in Houston, and the fact that he doesn't have a father who made a career out of getting his ass kicked on bad teams, why would he refuse to play in Houston? They've got a great stadium, a good fan base, a new head coach who has a lot of good running back production on his resume, no doubt a commitment to improve the o-line after recent half-hearted efforts proved themselves to be inadequate, and better young building blocks (players) than you give them credit for. And I am pretty sure he's not scared of competing with Domanick Davis for playing time.

Your reasons are that the Texans are in bad shape and Bush has shown some level of arrogance. That is the case 90% of the time with the first pick, yet this has only happened... 3 times? (Elway, Bo, Eli)

the manning family already had a lot of money and name power. I'm guessing Bush cares a lot more about the huge pay day he's gonna get and doesn't want to chance not being the first pick

Never said Bush was arrogant.... please quote me accurately :ninja: You are correct though in that I think the Texans are in bad shape. They are.. a team doesn't get the first pick of the draft unless they are in bad shape. Question remains though, is there enough reason for him to pull an Eli...

I think the possibility exists.. but given the percentage I quoted, he stands a far better chance of sticking to it and not holding out or refusing to play. We are simply discussing the possibility of him doing it and any reasons why he would/should.

San Diego was in FAR better shape talent wise, but the Eli situation was more complex than simply the shape of the current team. As you said, his father and handlers had a lot to do with it, despite their claims otherwise.

the manning family already had a lot of money and name power. I'm guessing Bush cares a lot more about the huge pay day he's gonna get and doesn't want to chance not being the first pick

That could be a big factor... as it has been. Its a lot of money to say no to.

My mistake. I missed the "not" in "Bush has not shown signs of the arrogance"

Of course, that makes me all the more :ninja: that you think there is a reasonable possibility that Bush will refuse to play for Houston.

Just simply provoking discussion and asserting that there are better teams out there, for any number of reasons and that IF he wanted to do it, there is a proven method to do it. Houston is probably not in the worst shape, but its in the top 5 of teams I wouldn't want to play on coming into the draft.
