Coming to you from glorious South Dakota

Recommended Posts

SOme things I have noticed about the State of South Dakota:

1) People here are nice, I have yet to meet a nasty person-though they prolly are around some around I guess. I was filling up the tank in some god forsaken patch of prarie between the Badlands and the Black Hills when the thing started overflowing. I was apologizing to the gas attendant, but he was apologizing profusely to me....would not let me leave without a free coffee.... The people here are cool, the people in Maryland/DC/Virginia suck ass....just sayin

2) Gas is cheaper, about $2.80

3) I love the dirt roads all over the place, you go from hardtop to 10 miles of dirt through winding hills from time to time, sorta cool. But, why are there no guard rails anywhere on the 500ft cliffs we are riding on?

4) Quiet. The total absence of sound unless the wind is blowing, or some bird or insect is getting busy.

5) Chicks. Not that many, and most of them are not much to look at.

6) Mount Rushmore is OK, Crazy Horse is better; Badlands are OK, Black Hills are better. The prarie is captivating, almost spiritual. The Mssouri river is a pretty stunning sight.

All in all, a pretty cool place to visit...

 There is an air base nearby.....

The place is isolation at its finest. If not for Rushmore, this place would have no life I swear. I also stopped by Wall Drug in the City of Wall....it's the South Dakota version of South of the Border in South Carolina. I think Wall Drug was first though...

We had a blast playing with the Prarie dogs and Bison out in the Badlands Park, though the Bison are a little.....edgy....

This description is helpful, probably, to to the 0.01% of us that have been to "South of the Border" in South Carolina. As for me, I'm gonna guess that you discovered a confederate flag waving "whites-only" stonghold in South Dakota and not a Mexican drugstore.

Yeah, and it has a Mcdonalds right next store, at the end of a long runway.

The establishment has an outdoor eating area, that my wife and I used while on a visit there. As we ate outdoors, alone, we were mocking all the folks that were packed inside. I recall making fun of them as fools not to be outside on such a nice day.

Half way through our meal, we realized why nobody ate outside at the Mcdonalds next to the airforce base, as a stealth bomber took off and zoomed over our heads, creating a small tornado that blew all of our food all over the focking place. Big Macs, drinks, fries all cast to the wind.

Also, most of those locals that my wife and I laughed at were comfy and safe inside, laughing their collective asses off at us as we drove away.

My impressions were:

Mt. Rushmore was so small compared to what you are expecting. Disappointed.

The Crazy Hourse thingy looked like it could be the 8th Wonder of the World [thois was 25 years ago so 'd love to see how far they have gotten]

Black Hills are how the world should be.

Hope you enjoyed them.

Send a pic of the 'Crazy Horse' mountain to me.

Can you take a photo of a person living in South Dakota? I don't believe anyone lives there.

North Dakota, South Dakot, Idaho, and Montana do not exist. They are figments of mapmakers imaginations. Surveyors are yanking your crank. Anyone who claims to live there, or even claimed to drive through one of these states is either a dirty hippy liar, or are under the influence of government manufactured mind control drugs.

Re-he-heallly.....

We should have a geek-meet.

My boy (11 months) has been running a fever so the wife (36DD) is taking him to the hospital in Rapid City real quick. I am taking the kids to the local put-put and luge slide thing, maybe to the gold mine. We needed some "down-time" anyways.

yeah.....South of the Border is this Meixcan-themed patch of silliness with every conceivable ride, nick-nack and goofy event possible.....Walldrug runs that similar theme into the cowboy theme, but is alot more classy....

Crazy Horse ting is going to be HUGE

I was remiss in my announcing all this before and, and I think I lost an opportunity to meet some geeks.

Well, there is still time I guess if they want to sound off and let me know where they are. Sioux Falls is not on the target list unfortunately...

Heading back over to Minnesota in a few days, today is Custer Park all day....

THe boy is feeling much better, had a touch of pnuemonia, but medicine is a wonderful thing! Hope all is well with you and yours

When I lived in the Twin Cities, the Dakotas were part of my "business territory" and I traveled to Rapid City twice / year. I only drove once so I could take in the Corn Palace, Wall Drug & Badlands. I enjoy your recounting of the adventures as I took in most everything you're visiting, albeit eight - ten years ago. My boss almost got trampled by a bison when she stepped out of the car in Custer Park to get a "close up"! Good memories....

I don't know how old your children are, but I always enjoyed Deadwood & Lead, with a beautiful drive back to Rapid thru Spearfish Canyon. If your children are real young, there's probably not much of interest in Deadwood (casinos & hilltop cemetery with lots of wild west heros).

My children (12,10 & 9) desire to see the Black Hills on family vacation this summer, to commence once baseball season(s) end after the 4th of July. I'd love to see you list a "top ten" activities in the Black Hills for families....

You can look at the women in Philly. The way you would look at a Picasso painting.
