cmh6476 1,010 Posted June 13, 2006 i give about $675 each year to Kovac's. Okay that's a lie, I save my money and enjoy everyone else's
GobbleDog 985 Posted June 13, 2006 I quit buying fireworks after I quit being a teenager. Nowdays I just take out my boat on July 4th and ride around at night hoping teenagers don't shoot bottlerockets at me, like I would probably do if I were still a teenager and saw somebody driving a boat at night on July 4th. parrot 789 Posted June 13, 2006 I don't buy many myself but for the past few years some friends and my wife and I have been running a fireworks stand as a fund-raiser. It's mind-blowing the money some people spend, including people who clearly can't afford it. I had a guy come in for about the third time last year with his three ragged-clothed kids in tow, one of which was wearing snow boots with shorts on the 2nd or 3rd of July. I had to really bite my tongue to keep from telling him "Maybe you ought to spring for some new shoes for the kids instead of buying another $45 mortar, jackass." Artist Formerly Known as Big O 0 Posted June 13, 2006 need the back story Pretty idiotic, but amusing 15 years later. Every New Years, we would party at my buddies house. His mom was the "cool mom", who did not hump anyone, yet let us party to our hearts' content. Their house was right on the country club golf course as well. Anyhoo, 1 year, we are getting bombed. Someone comes up with the brilliant idea to go buy fireworks and shoot them at each other on the golf course. Not bottle rockets, mind you, but the big $1 ea rockets. So, 20 of us posse up, go buy a ton, then proceed to run around the course launching them at each other. I was behind a tree and stuck my head around to peek right as a guy 20 ft away fired at someone else. Saw it coming, so I had a chance to turn my head slightly. WHAM! Hit me in the right eye at a slight angle. I scream and drop to my knees, blood gushing from my eye. Everyone is all focked up and laugh, thinking I am jacking with them. After a couple of minutes writhing aorund on the ground and wailing, they realize I am not. Rush to the hospital, clothes soaked in blood, sit in the emergency room for 4 focking hours before they can see me. My eylid is nearly torn off from the impact, hanging on by a small sliver of skin. They have to re-attach it and it takes 2 guys to hold me down as they have to jab needles into the area for the local. Next day, go home, parents are freaking out and we have to call a specialist. After visiting him, it turns out the impact detached the retina and the force also destroyed the part of the retina which allows for peripheral vision. Pressure in the eye is also dangerously low and close to rupture. I go for emergency surgery again about a day later, after swelling goes down. I now have a scaleral buckle, a tiny piece of titanium sourrounding the eye. This keeps pressure constant and prevents the eye from losing its shape. I also had to have another surgery on the eyelid and 4 laser surgeries to re-attach the retina. For nearly a month after the surgeries, I could only sleep sitting up and look straight ahead. No TV, no books, no nothing to keep me occupied as I caused severe pain in my eye and headaches if I tried to focus All vision out of the eye is focked, straight lines look crooked and color is off. I do not notice it anymore as my good eye has compensated some. Still have some vision in it, corrected as best they can with a contact. At the time, there were only 3 people in the US who could do a scaleral buckle. My doctor was from Ireland and came to the states to help pioneer the technique. Kind of cool in a way. I was told there were a ton of poeple watching my surgery and that it was documented for medical education as well. Every year when I go to the eye doctor for checkups, my Optrician calls in all his staff to check it out thorugh the exam equipment. For the rest of my life I also have the risk of a severe head impact/trauma causing me to lose my eye or re-detatch the retina. Pretty focking stupid when mixed with my old "likes to fight" personality back in college. Moral of the Story - Dont fock with fireworks kiddos

That's cool, personally my other business is involved in a couple of charitable programs so the funds from my firework sales goes into nzoner's play program. I read some of what Bob Dole had posted, and it's kinda disappointing the foundation sounds like it may be coming to an end. I'd like to come up and try and help support the cause this year if it's still a go
