Going to Vegas

Recommended Posts

I will be in Vegas for 3 days later this month.

My plan so far:

We are staying on the strip, so I want to go see the big hotels and probably gamble at least a little at each.

I mainly want to see Cesar's Palace, Luxor, Belliago, and Binions. I would like to see all of them during the day and at night. I probably won't go farther than walking distance, I think Binions is about 2 miles away, so I might go there.

I play blackjack, poker, and to a lesser extent, slots, video poker, and video blackjack. Actually, I spend more time but less money at the machines.

I will have about $200/day to gamble, another $200/day to spend on whatever.

Questions:

Which place has the outdoor fountain show?

Where is the indoor light show on the ceiling?

Best place to play poker?

Best place to play blackjack? especially low minimum

Anything I don't want to miss?

Binion's is downtown you will need a bus or cab to get there.

Luxor is down at the south end of the strip with Mandalay Bay.

Casar's and Bellagio are across the street from each other.

As far as where to stay it depends on your budget and how nice of a room you want.

Thanks.

Yeah, I wasn't think about going off-strip, I'm sure that is the best way to get low minimums. How far are we talking about though? Any specific places? Binions? Near the Freemont Street show?

Also, what kind of minimums are we talking about off-strip or at say, Cesar's or Imperial Palace?

Binion's is on the portion of Freemont that is covered. Downtown usually has more lower limit tables than the strip.

Most of the off strip places (primarily the Station Casinos) I am familair with are about a $10 - $15 cab ride from the strip. It is usually pretty easy to find $5 minimum tables. I hear you can find $2 and $3 as well.

Caesars and IP are like night and day. I don't think Caesars does anything under $15 and during prime times most of the tables will be $25 and up. IP has $5 minimum but it is hard to fined a $5 table during prime time. O'shea's is the the same $5 early than goes up to $10 later in the day. Casino Royal has $5 tables but they are usually full.

most of the casinos on the strip have access to the monorail. The monorail runs from the MGM Grand to the Sahara for a minimal fee. For a fairly inexpensive good time I suggest going to the Improv at Harrah's. They have 3 touring comedians and the show is pretty good.

I'm certainly not a Vegas expert, but here's my .02:

- The Monte Carlo seemed like the best value for you dollar on the strip. The Hotel was nice/classy, in a good location on the strip, and seemed pretty cheap compared to other big name hotels on the strip.

- The Coke Bottle (and M&M factory) is on the strip and is an excellent place to buy your tickets for show (the B-Shows, not the Celine, Danny Gans, O, etc big shows). Usually at the Coke bottle you can get 2 for 1 deals on your tickets.

- I didn't care for old Vegas at all. Yes, there were some lower priced tables but I would have been happy if I didn't even leave the Strip.

Where are you staying?

We are staying at a place off the strip called The Sivlerton. Her GF got us the honeymoon suite and it's FREE so I don't mind staying away from the strip. They also have a shuttle that goes back and forth.

It's pretty nice, has $2 and $3 Blackjack tables, and a lot of other cool features.

Are you sure you guys aren't aliai?

I'm going next weekend, which is NBA All-Star weekend. It should be pretty wild. One of my black friends who is 6'5" and pretty big, looks like a baller so hopefully that'll work to our advantage. Maybe i'll throw on some corn rows or something and pose as a baller too. Are there any 6'2" pg's with braids? Preferrably dark, so Tryone Lue won't work.

We're staying off the strip that weekend because prices are ridiculous. My friends family owns a bunch of chevrons so they get special hookups/rates or whatever and even he had to pay 2 bills on friday night night and i thnk it was $275 for saturday night for a one bed room.

Thanks Bert and others. I can use a lot of that information.

I have Binion's, Cesar's, and Silverton in my GPS.

If anyone has additional info, I will check back.

Thanks.

I am sure we are not aliai even though I am 30 something fat, bald and Texan.

The Palms should be our of control the whole weekend. That place is full NBA players on a normal off season weekend I can't imagine what it will be like for the All-Star game.

bellagio has the outdoor water fountain show. just walk up to it on the strip and watch from the railing. they have speakers in the railing so you can hear the music that it is all choreographed to.

also, watch the pirate/boat show outside treasure island. happens few times a night so just find out the next show and watch from the strip

i believe the outdoor lighted sidewalk is downtown, near binions

best poker is at bellagio but it can get pricey with a LONG wait for small tables. i've always had better luck at bally's(in regards to not having to wait long for a seat)

something to do instead of gambling is rent a car($40-50 for the day) and drive down to hoover dam. it's about 30 min away and is amazing - especially considering how technologically advanced it was when it was built

and oh yeah, bet on BLACK 23 :dunno:

NY/NY is a solid casino on the strip that is reasonably priced with some good restaurants...also has ESPN Zone, nice to watch sporting events if the sportsbooks are too busy.

Old Vegas is worth the 15-$20 cab ride.....check it out, spend 4-5 hours there and head back.

I forgot to post a trip recap.

We stayed at Imperial Palace. I highly recommend it. It's not the nicest, but it is probably one of the cheapest mid-strip. It is a short walk to Caesars, Bellagio, Venetian.

The Star Trek Experience at the Hilton was pretty cool. We didn't go on the ride, but ate at the restuarant and bought some things in the stores.

I started with $750 gambling money. Played mostly blackjack and video poker.

First day, lost about $13

Second day, won about $70

Third day, lost about $700 playing blackjack :(

I only placed one sports bet. It was at Caesar's. (won $18.15 on a $20 bet)

Fourth day, finally got around to playing poker. Won $60 at Excaliber.

Overall, I lost about $600 gambling. It was worth it, we had a lot of fun.

We did enough walking that I feel like I know the city pretty well.

The only bad part was that our flight was cancelled and we didn't get to leave until 11PM the day after we were supposed to leave at 1PM.

Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Thanks for the update! :(

And at least you only lost what you knew you could. That's the thing I like the least about any casino. Sitting at a table and watching when some people lose, the looks on thier faces because you know they can't really afford to lose what they just did, which was probably their next few months mortgage payments. :dunno:

I didn't. We just went there to eat.

You may remember that when you leave the sportsbook at Caesar's if you go to the right (facing the boards) there is an exit. Well, when I went there to place my bet, I forgot about that exit. That one mistake made it nearly impossible to leave the building. I did a lot of walking.

Appreciate the tip,we're leaving next Tuesday so I'll have a day or so to check on some other sportsbooks. It's not that we don't want to watch at Caesar's it's just a been there done that and we'd like to find something else.

Last time I went out there, I stayed at NYNY and thought it was pretty cool at first. Easy to get around etc. But there is so much visual stuff going on there that I found myself feeling more disoriented by the day. Back to the Monte Carlo for me. Classy place with a great pool.

Hints (not mentioned):

There's a free monorail that runs from Monte Carlo to Bellagio (there was talk it was going to be extended).

For free drinks, try playing low limit Pi Gow Poker. Slow moving game (but fun) where you won't win or lose much and get totally trashed. The dealer will teach you to play/show you how to play your hand.

For free drinks and people watching, get yourself a bucket and put a couple bucks worth of quarters in it. Chat with your companion(s) and only stick a coin in when you see a waitress. Move around to different machines. You can drink for a couple hours this way on only a few bucks.

LV has GREAT golf courses. This is the main reason I go. Try Bali Hai. Nice track and not overly expensive.
