Zach Johnson just HAD to play the jesus card, didn't he?

Recommended Posts

Christians are asked to tithe

Mormons are forced to tithe

So don't you think that if God was such a force in your life that you felt him next to you for an entire tournament, to the point that you felt it necessary to publicly thank him afterwards, that you'd be willing to financially support him as his word suggests you should??

weird... it's funny how upset people get when someone shows their faith... if you don't believe in God or Jesus... WHO CARES... just deal with it...

people who advertise that they are atheist and scream about how God isn't real are just as bad as biblethumpers...

How come people that win tournaments and sporting events never thank Satan? How come they never say "if I had believed in god, none of this would have happend for me"?

Perhaps because nobody that has won anything like that is a Satan worshiper? I don't know, you might want to ask people who have won and not done so.

Because people who worship the devil suck at athletics? Are stuck in their mother's basement playing D&D? :dunno:

Or are stuck on a message board whining about how someone thanked God after winning an event? :D

I've always thought you were against political correctness, or other "controls" on what people say/terms they use.

Is you, or is you ain't?

Getting into this thread a little late but....

I'm an Atheist, and am all for each of us having our own personal belief system, whether that be religion or simply the Golden Rule. The only issue I have is when the extremists (from each side) try to convince you that your way of thinking is wrong. To each his own. And I had no problem with Johnson sharing his belief in Jesus and his family, that they all gave him strength and support. That's what he believes in, and no one IMO should be telling him he's wrong.

My guess is ed started this thread 1/2 just to get a rise out of those that have religion in their lives and 1/2 because of other athletes that do thank god or jesus for the win, rather than pointing out that it's their belief in god/jesus that gave them the "strength" to win. It always drives me nuts when athletes directly thank god for the win. Just once I'd like to see the press ask them "then why do you think god made the other team lose?"

I don't think you've ever gone out of your way to 'promote' your faith. You field questions and give your opinion when asked and interject when the topic comes around, which everyone here appreciates. You always keep your decorum no matter which way other push or prod. I've never had qulams with you or your beliefs.

I agree that Zach's comments did not pressure. However when he (or others in his situation) says them I can't help but toss him into the 'religious' bucket before the 'good golfer', 'devoted family man' or 'good person' buckets. I can't help it - it's kind of a sore spot I guess. Some people hear religion and think "peace, helping fellow man, guidance, everlasting life, divine power, a presence to lean on in hard times, an explanation for life's mysteries.". I think "rules, regs, fairy tales, lies, manipulation, cults, money, power, brainwashing.". I understand that the first list exists to some people, but my brain always defaults to the second.

I go out of my way in real life sometimes, but never any pressure. I am compelled to testify what God has done in my life, but there's a time and a place for that like you said.

I just don't want to you to think that I'm quiet about my faith and keep it to myself. I most certainly do not....I just try to be respectful of others' rights and I am not an intrusive person by nature. Maybe that's what you're referring to.

I was thrilled for Johnson when he won. out of everyone in contention, after Woods I wanted Johnson to win. Then I'm getting all teary eyed because he was holding back his tears he was so happy he won and then he throws Jesus in my face? Fock him :dunno:

Jesus still loves you despite your wicked ways. DORK.

Did he love me the day me and a couple friends broke into a church at a summer school that was boarded up for the winter. When I took a piece of broken glass and carved my initials in the chest of the Jesus statue hanging on the wall. :headbanger:

Yes he did. And he forgave you. That is the power and the beauty of Christ.

(if you are into that sort of thing)

Plus - that was pretty lame. One of the reasons I disregard religion is because I find my own set of morals are set at a high standard and I don't need to be told what is right and wrong. You seem to do it simply to show disrespect for authority. I think you should read the Bible for some tips.

For those who still think he was just doing the PC athlete "thanking jeebus" thing, this is from USA Today:

The self-described "simple man" with a "simple golf swing" wears his faith on his ball marker: One side says, "One shot at a time" and "Matthew 6:33-34." The other side says, "Trust your line" and "Proverbs 3:5-6."
