newark execution

Recommended Posts

i figured you all didn't hear about this. i know how you all tend to keep up with news of people being senslessly killed, i guess there isn't much media coverage about it.

i was born and raised in newark. sad and tragic.

new york times

The shooting took place on Saturday about 11:30 p.m. as Natasha Aeriel, 19, her brother Terrance, 18, Iofemi Hightower, 20, and Dashon Harvey, 20, were listening to music and chatting in the school playground. When they noticed a group of young men assembling nearby, the police say, Ms. Aeriel and her friends sensed trouble and began sending text messages to each other suggesting that they leave.

But before they could go, the four students were confronted by the men, who shot Ms. Aeriel, then marched the other three to a concrete wall, lined them up and killed them. Ms. Aeriel suffered a bullet wound to the back of her ear but survived.

Even in a city accustomed to violence, the murders shocked many residents because the victims seemed to have escaped the gangs, drugs and crime that destroy so many lives. For Mayor Booker, who has made repeated pledges to whittle away at the intractable murder rate, the murders have overshadowed the progress his administration has made in reducing shootings, rapes, burglaries and other crimes during his 13 months in office.

This has been ALL over the news. Not sure how you figure that "there isn't much media coverage about it".

Please don't take this into a media bias against blacks discussion. TIA

It's not like it's the first time anyone got shot in Newark. Blaming Mayor Corey Booker is just rediculous. It's a cultural phenomena ... but Newark has been REALLY SCREWED UP for a long time, and you can't expect change overnight.

Yeah, I saw that. What exactly was the motive?

The three kids shot seemed to be upstanding people. One was running for a position in the school gov't and the other was a school band member.

that's funny....you mean there has been a lot of media coverage on this story?

gee, well why then wasn't the story posted here?

i usually read about other crimes posted here with a lot of angry geeks wanting the death penalty imposed for crimes as heinous as this.

i just figured since i didn't read about it here you all must obviously have not heard about it.

i mean why else wouldn't you all care about such a thing when you all seem to care about all the other stories similar to this one.

i wonder....

My mother knew Amadou Diallo.

I agree, it's a little presumtuous to think we all don't know, and or don't care .... but like I said ... it's not like it's the first time someone got shot in Newark.

It's surprising really that it has become national news. I think it's the cold blooded nature of the crime ... and that these were good kids that got killed is the reason there is as much coverage as there is.

More than your standard black kid gunned down in the streets of Newark, any given night of the week.

But that's really a shame ... that we don't pay attention to the greater picture.

I think because it shows just how easy it is to escape the poverty and violence of the American inner city. All the libs here want to cry and say how hard it is for blacks blah blah blah, but here's 4 kids that made it.

So just b/c there is no thread on the Geek Bored it's not old news? I don't see any threads regarding the inauguration of George Washington as president. Should we assume that this too is new-thread-worthy. You should go back to your Chronic Husker alias anyway.

If you want to talk about what happened during the George Washington inauguration then go right ahead? We talk about stuff that happend in the past all the time.

NOW, if I posted a thread about the same exact thing the very next day, then you may post in it saying: "Wheel invented!".

If you don't see the difference then I feel for you. HTH.

Maybe it has something to do with the Newark murder rate being on pace to hit 2006's mark of 105 (the most in 17 years). Considering the population of Newark is approx 280,000 that means that the murder rate in Newark is about FIVE TIMES the murder rate of NYC.

ETA: Last I checked we don't discuss every murder in the US here on the Geek Club. We usually just discuss the ones that stand out. Frankly, I don't think there was much that was unique to this crime, other than the fact that the animals who live in the zoo we call Newark might finally have woken up from their slumber and realized how badly they've let their city turn to sh|t.

really?

what major city doesn't have a high murder rate?

do you believe that if 3 white college kids were lined up and shot and killed in newark no one here would've mentioned it?

there wouldn't have been blood curdling outrage and a cry for the military to seek and find the assailants.

it is clear to me that you all are desensitized to the deaths of black victims, not victims that die in newark.

racists!

Surprised it took you this long to bring up the race card. Seriously, do something more constructive with your time. If this country is too racist for you, you are free to leave anytime you want. Thanks !

So, if you go to CNN.com, you will see that the first story (other than the headline) is:

"Schoolyard slayings suspect pleads not guilty"

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/10/schoolyar...ings/index.html

Under MSNBC, it is in the top 10 under US News.

I have seen it as a lead story on the news since the day that it happened.

So, exactly, how is the media not covering this?

I'm actually going to have to agree, especially given that one of the suspects' names is Jose Carranza, it's very surprising certain posters didn't have a field day with this one. Also apparently people think that the residents of Newark are "animals," further supporting your point. So far, you're winning this thread.

The apprehension of these suspects is less than a day old news. That's the article she linked to. Besides, her point in posting this is the absence of discussion here on this topic. Tool.

I don't think that you are getting that I know that and I am critiquing her choice of words in starting the thread in the first place. The only "news" that comes from this place is on:

- Demwits by Recliner Pilot

- Hom0s and their ultimate perversion by gocolts

- hot chicks by wiffle and kutulu

Everything else is totally stupid.

As I pointed out, Newark's murder rate is FIVE TIMES HIGHER than the next closest large city, NYC.
do you believe that if 3 white college kids were lined up and shot and killed in newark no one here would've mentioned it?
Yes, we'd be discussing it to try to figure out what 3 white college kids were doing in Newark. I currently live and grew up within 30 minutes of Newark. There are not many places that most people would feel safe in that city (regardless of the color of your skin.) Pretty much, you have the area around the new arts center, which is also where there is a thriving Hispanic neighborhood w/many good restuarants, which is also near where the new hockey arena is being built and Newark Penn Station (if you're at the Broad St station at night I hope you're well armed and not alone.)
it is clear to me that you all are desensitized to the deaths of black victims, not victims that die in newark.
No, we are desinsitized to the senseless murder that goes on regularly in cities like Newark.

She already addressed your point about not getting news from here. She sarcastically said the media wasn't covering this (knowing that it is) because normally this place is full of threads with the news topics of the day, particularly when they are violent crimes. She is not attacking the media, but the retards on this bored such as the folks you listed. See jets24 posts in this thread for another example of board retardation.

Also apparently people think that the residents of Newark are "animals,"

As Coach Ortiz used to say in high school, "If the shoe fits...TIE IT!"

A little history about Newark. It used to be nice. It used to have a middle class. Then in the late 60's the riots came and anyone who could leave was driven out by the criminals and the corrupt politicians.

What did the people of Newark do about it? Nothing. They kept on robbing and killing one another, while continuing to re-elect dirty politicians like Sharpe James, the NJ version of Marion Barry.

Only recently have the residents of that city begun to realize how they've let this happen to themselves and how they've let down their children.

I'm not saying those three deserved to die (or that the fourth deserved to be shot in the face), but there's no denying that the people of Newark have brought this kind of garbage upon themselves.

It is all over the news here in NYC, has been since it happened. Was front page news everyday, until the storm focked up the transit system.
