Anyone ever read "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis ?

Recommended Posts

No, but every time I see that movie is on I try to remind myself to read it.

The movie was OK, but the reason that I always thought it fell short was that it was lacking the detail that I assume is in the book.

There was much more detail in the book, a lot more character development illustrating Bateman's psychoticness and attention to detail.

Davebg is totally right though. I always thought the movie was awesome , but after reading the book, the movie does the author's work absolutely no justice.

What don't you understand? I found the movie to be entertaining (hence the "OK" rating), but it always seems to miss the mark, likely b/c in a book you get to read the protagonist's thoughts. The movie attempted to fill that void w/all of the narrative, but it wasn't good enough IMO. The movie just didn't completely come together for me and I think that's b/c when you are dealing w/the thoughts of a crazy person/serial killer that the extra detail (that is likely in the book) is needed.

Don't you actually have to READ the book before you know whether or not it's better than the movie?

Books can be 800 pages and a movie can only be so long. Not even Peter Jackson with 3+ hours of movie was able to emulate what was in the LOTR Trilogy.

Same with The Godfather. The movie was great, but the book was much more detailed.

Of course his assertion was correct. Books are always more detailed than movies, THEY'RE BOOKS! :wall:

Was still a roll my eyes moment!

How about b/c the internal monologue of the main character and further insight into his neurotic thoughts are much more important to a head case like Bateman than it is for Frodo?

There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape, but even after admitting this there is no catharsis, my punishment continues to elude me and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself; no new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing.

This makes absolutely NO sense what so ever. I have never seen the movie, never read the book...and the thread titled "Anyone ever read..." Again. You post makes NO sense. It's not like it said, "If you've read....POST HERE!!!"

Good Lord, you guys are reachin'.

Yes, by posting and telling us that you have neither read the book or seen the movie really added value to the thread.

yes, but it didn't happen in the same sequence as in the movie though. If I remember, in the movie, the biz cards scene happened during a lunch meeting right before Bateman was going to strangle Luis in the bathroom. In the book I think they had the biz card part when they were all out to dinner one night.

I answered the question, didn't I?

And your posts attempting to call me out added a LOT of value I am sure...since you turned it into a "battle" as Addict stated.

Move on, dave.

True, I did ask if anyone had read the book, but I wasn't hoping that everyone that didn't would respond with a "no". Sorry, but Davebg wins this one

ah. thanks. yea, it's been awhile seen i saw the movie, so the sequence might not have occurred to me. and i'm sure the mirror sex scene is in there right. that was so classic. gd i love christian bale. what a psycho. i think that's what made him even greater as bruce wayne/batman. at least to me. riding that edge. oh baby.

also, i just read this on wikipedia... in a word... awesome

:bandana:

"Feminist activist Gloria Steinem was among those opposed to the release of Ellis' book because of its portrayal of violence towards women. Steinem is also the stepmother of Christian Bale, who portrayed Bateman in the film adaptation of the novel. This irony is mentioned in Ellis's mock memoir Lunar Park. "

I am sure that EVERYONE who hasn't read it would respond...looks like it was only me who said, "No. I haven't read/seen..." Next time, perhaps rephrasing the title to read, "If youve read...POST HERE." Maybe some of us would better understand the instructions and unwritten posting rules.

WTG at helping one perhaps branch out, learn a little more, and be sure to check out the movie/book.

The movie was great. Love it!

Batemen had a great taste in music with Huey Lewis & The News, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, and Robert Palmer. He not only played it and listened to it but he would give a 4 star speech about the greatness of Huey and Phil.

There were 5 pages in the book dedicated to Bateman describing a new Huey Lewis album  And yes Edgr, Christian Bale is a phenomenal actor. Did anyone see the movie "The Rising Sun". Christian Bale starred in it with Joe Pantaloni (sp) and John Malkovich when he was just a little kid, maybe 10 years old. Focking great movie :music_guitarred:
