Stud RB Theory Stinks!

Recommended Posts

I went with RB\RB in my league with S Jack and T Jones. While you have to take S Jax, I walked up to the board, picked up the sticker for S Smith, but then put it down since I could hear the "experts" in my head "RB RB". So I put the S Smith sticker down and grabbed T Jones....

No more RB RB for me. Stack your team with as many studs as possible. Then worry about depth later, not in the first 3 rounds

2nd pick was the worst pick in this years draft.

you had to take Jackson, he was the #2. Live with it and STFU.

TIA

Your league has stickers?

Well, that's your problem.

I love RB's as much as anyone, but there is no way I will ever deviate from drafting the Best Player Available. That said, I drafted Thomas Jones in a lot of leagues, but I was fully aware of his rough early schedule. Steve Smith was long gone by the time I drafted Jones. Jones will be worthy of a #2 RB by the season's end. He only has one more game against the Pats and none against the Ravens.

I think the best way is best available........it's guys picking T. Jones, MJD and Benson before Steve Smith and TO that ended up screwing up the entire work league.....#1 pick got LT, SSmith and TO...crazy

There is nothing wrong with it....it just depends how it goes....i took SJax in round 1 (#2), MJ Drew in 2nd, and R Brown in 3rd...thinking i would be set at RB for the year....now, 2 weeks in, i have the low score each week.....just remember, it is a long season.

I am one of the most vocal proponents of the "2 Stud RB" theory in my league to the point that I am laughed to scorn.

However, this year because I was blessed with the 12th pick overall, I took a leap and went Chad Johnson / Steve Smith with the 1 & 2 pick.

It certainly worked out for me this week :overhead:

when will people just admit....its about VBD and the drop-off of tiers...and stop creating the same circular arguments?

(i.e. "should I go RB/RB this year?")

I can see your point. I have always drafted RB.RB and actually won doing that the last two years. This year I went with the same format which does something like RB.RB.QB.RB.WR.WR.WR.QB......I drafted Parker 1st then Bush second. As it has been widely said around here Bush has been a disappointment. I won't give up on Bush for a few weeks unless someone offers me something decent for him.

I've won my league's Championship 4 times in 11 years. Each time the opening draft positions was different.

I always try to draft the most valuable player I believe is on the board regardless of position. I tend to use the "RB" theory, that is, take the best available runningback with my first pick and go with my gut the rest of the way. That said, I've won RB/RB, WR/WR, RB/QB, and RB/WR.

Given that Fantasy Football is 100% chance... it really doesn't matter for the most part aside from drafting the bodies you hope will score the most for you.

Your problem is not the stud RB theory. Your problem is not being able to identify stud RBs. Thomas Jones wasn't a stud. He was a good value in the 3rd round and bit of a reach in the 2nd. Steven Jackson was the #2 RB because everyone said so. There were reasons to think he was in for a letdown. Aging WRs, aging O-line, an assload of carries last year. FWIW, if I had #2, I'd have traded down to 5 or so and picked up Addai or Gore. Not saying Jackson was a "bad" pick but there was a non-zero chance he let owners down this year. So far he has. Maybe it continues, maybe he turns it around. I still think he's a "#1 back" but not worth the #2 pick.

There is nothing you could do with that #2 pick besides take Steven Jackson though, all signs were pointed to a great season and a repeat/upgrade over his 2006 totals were feasible. He isn't too far off the pace that he needs to get to (2000 total yds) and will face some easier defenses to run on in the coming weeks, he didn't have a "bad" day against SF, if anyone not picked in the 1st round had 96 total yards it would be a great fantasy contribution. If any positive can be spun into it, Marc Bulger took way too many sacks today because of the ineffectiveness of the running game so expect the Rams to address that this week and get S-Jax some way to move that ball. Remember last year he had some trouble at the start of the season getting into the end zone, so hang tight and there is a good chance he will begin producing soon.

Would S-Jax owners be disappointed had he had 96 yards and a TD? Nope, sit tight and don't get down to the point where you are unloading him yet.

(BTW if Torry Holt hadn't fumbled on that red zone possession I was positive that Steven would of had a TD there)

I targeted Ahman Green and AD and was able to take Chad Johnson and Torry Holt in the 2nd and 3rd. I'm sitting pretty good in that league.

Who the hell is AD?

That's nuts...i went FWP (#8), ocho', gates, and then roy...(who slipped) in my 14 team main league...people thought I was crazy for not taking another RB, but lets just say that i'm dominating right now!

T Jones is not a stud running back and your shouldn't have taken him in the 2nd round.

Your failure is to correctly analyze who is a "stud". T Jones is not.

Wow, very similar to me. Westbrook, then CJ, Gates and Roy Williams. Then later got LaMont Jordan. FTW!!!!!

You've got to get value out of your picks. Picking in the 9th -12th and taking some lower value RBs just to get RB/RB isn't smart.

Man. A lot of bad info being spewed in this thread. In most leagues, stud RB theory is the way to go. Seeing TJs stats the past few years in Chicago, taking him in the second round is not bad. He's had some injury issues recently and the Jets have played two of the best rushing defenses in the first two games. His QB went down today and everybody that follows the NFL knows the deal with Kendall. ff is a marathon, not a dash. In one league, I took Gore with the third pick, Benson with the 22nd and TJ with the 34th pick. That team is currently 0-2. Partially due to going against Palmer and CJ today. I'm not going to get down and write my team off due to a couple bad weeks.

You can't get down and write proven players off two weeks into the season - especially when taking all things into consideration on Jones. SJax is still a great back. Pace and Incognito have injuries. LT is a great back. He's also run into tough defenses his first two games. The new commercial with Reggie Bush mentions him not getting a TD the first half of the season last year. He was still taken in the first round in just about every draft I've seen. A guy that runs for 1000 yards in a season is generally considered a stud. Crunch the numbers and that's just over 60 yards per game.

It happens every year that naive ff owners write their teams off after a bad game or two out of their team. The guys that do that don't deserve to win in ff.

Don't know if any theory really works had the 10 pick (12 man) got Alexander with that and drafted Henry at 14 and I'm still 1-1 with no stud recievers. It's early to tell but there is always that one guy in the league you want to beat and I lost to him by 3 a special thanks to vinateri for costing me the game, one blocked extra point and a missed FG.

I don't even set-up my draft pick, I just let it be and I've won every year (2 years-1st and 2nd place)

There was so much mediocrity, question marks, and committees at RB this year, you almost had to abandon the Stud RB theory.

In one of my two main leagues, we start 3 WRs. Out of the #12 spot, I took Chad Johnson, Steve Smith and Andre Johnson with my first three picks, much to everybody's shock, going WR-WR-WR. They looked like better scoring options than a questionable running back. And if you get any kind of production out of running back (I have Cedric Benson, Lamont Jordan, and Warrick Dunn)...you end up setting league records in scoring in back to back weeks.

So far so good, but it's early. But most of those top WRs are all producing big numbers.

I was at the arse end of the draft this year, so I went RB/WR/WR/RB. I would have done better if I went WR/WR/WR/RB...

PPR League:

Reggie Bush

Steve Smith

Roy Williams

Willis McGahee

I had the 12th pick in a ppr league went with the 2 best availible rb's reggie bush and rudi. Now before the draft I was thinking taking steve smith, but when bush fell to me I couldnt pass him up. And yes I am real real real sorry I didnt take steve smith. MY wideouts are good though with housh and walker, but I can only imagine steve smith there....geez

Always go with best value. The problem with the second round is that half of the RBs will be disappointments. I got lucky because Smith, Harrison & Chad were all gone so I went with James over Benson (#2 in a 10 teamer in one league). Half of the Drew, James, Benson, TJones, Deuce, R.Brown, McGahee, Portis and these types of guys are going to be disappointments. I can't figure out the difference between them.

Let's not forget, one of the main rationales behind the "Stud RB" theory is that a feature back, over the long run, will put up more consistant numbers than a feature WR.

No doubt Steve Smith, Ocho, and Harrison are incredible values, but for every 10/180/2td day they turn in, there is also those 3/30/0td days as well. A RB like Rudi or McGahee (not stud, but definitely feature) will consistantly get 30 touches a game.

Instead of leaping on SS/CJ/MH, grab the steady RBs and scoop up the Housh, Wayne, or Hines Ward type WRs in the 3rd thru 6th rounds.

NTM - makes sense, except I can't pencil in any of the backs to give me anything consistant. Half of those guys I mentioned are going to barely get 1000 yards and 6 touchdowns, are going to be at some point during the year unplayable. I had that happen last year. 3 of my top 4 picks were RB and my team was uncompetitive (James, JJones, Lewis). This year I went a different route where I drafted James in the end of the second round (and hope I guessed correctly) and reached for Palmer a little early, bypassing a wide or another RB. I could have easily have picked Benson and been very disappointed in the many 50 yard no TD games he will give.

The game has changed over the last couple of years. You have such a large pool of RBs that weren't there before. Jordan and Caddy were had in the 5th and 6th rounds. The amount of flat out stud RBs have diminished, but the playable guys can be picked up later than yesteryear.

I swear it's easier to just throw darts at names and go with that.

A revised Stud RB theory perhaps... Stud RB in round 1, then Best Player Available thereafter ?
