RicemanX 20 Posted December 4, 2007 So I am waiting for a callback from Cisco telling me if I get this job or not. I received an e-mail requesting for a background check. Does that mean they have hired me or are seriously considering hiring me pending the background check? Or are they probably doing this with all 70 applicants? I'm hoping they are saving the good news for after my background check, but I don't want to get my hopes up.
lambert58 74 Posted December 4, 2007 Normally background checks are done with applicants that we want to hire. The background checks cost money and are only used on serious candidates for a position.

WHat do you usually check in the background checks? Just to make sure we're not a criminal? Or pretty much all the details, where we worked, our GPA in college, references? edjr 7,165 Posted December 4, 2007 yeah, I'm waiting to hear back now from a place I interviewed at twice. They have already contacted my references and ran a background check. I focking hate waiting.
Yer mom 2 Posted December 4, 2007 yeah, I'm waiting to hear back now from a place I interviewed at twice. They have already contacted my references and ran a background check. I focking hate waiting. Background checks are often done in bulk and once every week to two weeks depending on the number of applicants and company size. Hopefully its a large company you applied with, if so its fairly standard to have to wait a bit for a response.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted December 4, 2007 A background check costs us money. We only do it with applicants that we intend to hire. If you have made it through to that stage, then you are okay (provided that you don't have some issues in the background check). I don't know what Cisco does, but I can't imagine that they would spend the dough to look at your background if they did not want to hire you.
Let Da Big Dog Eat 42 Posted December 4, 2007 WHat do you usually check in the background checks? Just to make sure we're not a criminal? Or pretty much all the details, where we worked, our GPA in college, references? They check: Former jobs, not much to be gained there. Criminal record. Yeah, that would kill ya. Credit history. GPA. If you lie, you're history. Maybe landlords. Maybe DMV. Goes to responsibility. References are asked for and checked only to see who you listed. If you can list former bosses/prof's, it's a plus, if you can only list friends, it's a minus. GL
lambert58 74 Posted December 4, 2007 WHat do you usually check in the background checks? Just to make sure we're not a criminal? Or pretty much all the details, where we worked, our GPA in college, references? My wife actually works for a company that is contracted out to do background checks. The questions are normally: Business related: Was the employee employed there for the dates listed. What position did the employee hold. Would the employee be eligible for rehire. Reason for seperation. (if no longer working there) Did the employee ever fail a drug test. Attendence record. Mostly the business related is handled by the human resource department. So it can't get too personal if you worked for a decent size company. Education: When did person attend school. G.P.A. Field of Study. For Personal References: What type of character is employee What type of personality. i.e. Outgoing, smart, relaxed.. Would you hire this person...etc. The questionairres are structured as to what can or can not be asked. Mostly it is verification of what you listed on your application. GL The credit history is a seperate check than a background check. The credit check requires you to sign a form allowing the company to contact credit agencies. Background checks can be done based off of the information provided on an application.

Yes and NO grasshoppa. Collections, judgments etc. are a matter of public record and require no forms or sigs.
RicemanX 20 Posted December 4, 2007 They check: GPA. If you lie, you're history. uh oh, how much of a lie is a lie? I have a 2.93 and I listed a 3.0 on my resume. Is that something to disqualify me for?

Bert 1,129 Posted December 4, 2007 uh oh, how much of a lie is a lie? I have a 2.93 and I listed a 3.0 on my resume. Is that something to disqualify me for? It very well could at a company as good as Cisco. It begs the questions would you also round up a 2.6 or 2.5 to 3.0? If you are willing to lie on an application to make your self look better what will you do if you get the job? Hopefully it won't hurt you but when you deal with a company that gets tons of applications you would be surpised at what can make the difference between getting an offer and not gettin an offer. Good Luck.
Fah-Q 0 Posted December 4, 2007 uh oh, how much of a lie is a lie? I have a 2.93 and I listed a 3.0 on my resume. Is that something to disqualify me for? lol hell no. They just make sure you have nothing major. Unless you're fresh out of college they won't even check your GPA. You really think none of Cisco's other 40k+ employees rounded up? You won't hear a thing about it - guaranfocking-tee it.

RLLD 4,283 Posted December 5, 2007 It depends, on what Cisco's standard action regarding applications might be. If they prefer to spend the coin up front on the check to rule people out, and avoid wasted time in interviews it might not mean too much. That is how I hire. The background check on my project is a total deal-breaker, thus we do it for every applicant right up front. I also cannot hire people from places like Uganda, Venzuela, Iran etc etc without a nearly inattainable waiver. Basically, I have an open position and I complete an online workflow to open a req.....then the recruiters start applying resumes to the req, I pick the ones I feel like interviewing from the resume list, they get a background check before I even bother sitting down with them. Interviewing is one of the most boring things, I hate it...... A resume and a clean background gets you the chance to sell yourself; ultimately, how well you present is the key factor in hiring.
