Same here. If thats the fact he saves himself what? 12-13 mil that he can put to his own use. Good for him. Its not like someone who makes 100 mil is going to be broke anytime soon but why give 12 mil to someone for something you can do yourself.

More guys like Ovechkin and Crosby will probably change that though. They're fun to watch.

9-3-3 recently, not bad. Still, I don't understand where this type of money comes from. Nobody gives a ratsass about them in DC. Plus Ted Leonsis was one of the owners at the forefront of the lockout, now he does this. I would have to bet that the contract is ridiculously backloaded. Probably pays 50 million for the 2019-2020 season.

i thought of my comments this am...they ARE playing better and because of OV, olie..and i like the announcers..they are a fun team to watch...i meant in general, that they are in quicksand...

look at how quick the flyers and blues have responded thanks to rental player trades..

i still its lunacy that the old preds owner could sell and buy the wild...wtf..

anyway, what i had heard was the OV deal was pretty even....9 or so for the first 6 years and 10-11 for the rest..a bargain in 2019 when the nhl has 50 teams and plays on 4 freeking continents

Actually, the NHL is making money, but it's all smoke and mirrors.

NHL revenue is up, largely due to the value of the Canadian vs US dollar and increased ticket prices. However, there is virtually zero growth in the NHL right now.

Ovie is 22yrs old and will be one of the best players over the next decade. Lidstrom was making 10m per

year before the strike, I think 7.5 after with the across the board cuts. So this isn't so crazy. The last thing

they want is to lose this guy to a more attractive franchise in a few years when the revenue and salary cap

increases.

I think he stays to get Gretzky’s record but he may need to play two more seasons to get it.

he has one year left on his contract. he really hurt the caps more than helped this year

He really slowed down this year.  There is also a chance he breaks the record very late in the season next year. This would be probably his ideal scenario.  No way the Caps dump him this offseason and I can’t see him retiring so close to that record. I’ve loved watching him play over the years.  Easily top 5 all time.
