remote controller 143 Posted March 11, 2008 I've seen him play a few times and he's a killer guitarist, no doubt about it. When one talks about being the greatest rock guitarist, one needs to factor in other things than just skill or virtuosity. Guitar players like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, Santana, and others made lasting footprints in rock history. I'm sorry Newbie, but Lukather will never be thought of as anything other than just a great guitar player. Those other guys mentionned will be thought of as rock gods forever. Being in Toto and doing session work isn't enough to be called the best rock guitarist of all time. As far as defending this poll from this website, no way. Way too many huge discrepancies to give it legitimacy. Brian May and Lukater as numbers one and two make me think that some very like-minded people were driven to that poll, and skewed the result, or that website is somehow linked to a Toto site. I agree. My thoughts are that this is like the Idol vote. Text away!!! There are many varied styles of guitar playing too. Give me Hendrix and Page...............give me the guy from ZZTop and the guy that died from Chicago........hell give me Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood, and I can point out something they all do as good or better than anyone. Lukather is good, and I learned that in this thread, but i didn't know he existed.
NewbieJr 541 Posted March 11, 2008 they all do as good or better than anyone. You hit the nail on the head, here. The main thing you did correctly was name Lukather in a post about great guitarists. Like others have mentioned, being in a alightweight band like Toto has kept him from being the household name that Clapton or Gibbons or Van Halen are, but he's in their league as a guitarist. paulinstl 296 Posted March 11, 2008 The Reverand Billy Gibbons And Billy Gibbons learned his chops from Roy Buchanan. Ask 1000 famous guitarists who was the best guitar player they ever heard, Buchanan would be neck-in-neck with Hendrix.

remote controller 143 Posted March 11, 2008 Best I've seen! He would be the top one on my list. kutulu 1,664 Posted March 12, 2008 you're arguing with someone that considers Kiss a decent band! KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley has told Australia's Daily Telegraph that modern bands "useless and pathetic" and is promising value for money during their Australian mini-tour. "Good economy or no economy, we have no intentions of stopping," said Stanley. "We gave up doing this for money a long time ago, we love it, but we still get paid." "Rock and roll is in a pathetic state," he added. "Bands think they can can get up on stage and strum their guitars and then download it — it's useless and pathetic. "We're sick and tired of seeing bands getting up on stage and not giving value for your buck." "We not only want to live up to the legend (of KISS) but we want to exceed it, and that's why we are here," Stanley said. "KISS music is universal, ageless — we always find a new audience," said Stanley. "What we sing about is celebrating life, about enjoying yourself. "We don't need to to look for an audience — the audience finds us."
NewbieJr 541 Posted March 12, 2008 "KISS music is universal, ageless — we always find a new audience," said Stanley. Aren't Kiss fans the same ones they had twenty years ago? Seriously, I don't think the My Space generation could name a Kiss song. "Rock and roll is in a pathetic state," he added. - says the guy who's band was gimmicky and dressed like clowns on stage.
