1st Round Commentary

Portis and gore were great picks. I had them going at #6 and #7, but i knew Fumble would take brady. I have come full circle on Portis this season, and Gore is going to be on a better squad this year. He also still catches an amazing number of balls. I felt Portis and Gore should have went before Lynch and Barber, and Brady and Moss. NAN and JScott are in great shape for the corner!

I have Portis and Gore ranked before MBIII and Lynch too (redraft rankings) and was also surprised to see Brady and Moss go before them. Very happy to get Gore at 1.11 especially with Martz coming to town. I think they'll get the ball to Gore in open space more, rather than just up the gut versus 8 in the box, which should also help reduce injury risk.

Actually, taking Brady was a tough decision for me. I almost took Lynch or Barber...who I have ranked ahead of Portis and Gore. Lynch is going to get a lot of touches this year and Barber is going to get a ton of touchdowns, so both are solid picks. To answer Bomb's question, I have Brady ranked #6 overall behind the consensus five running backs....I might have wavered a bit at 1.05 as to whether Brady was more valuable than Addai, but would have likely taken Addai there when it comes right down to it.

I haven't seen a pick so far that I did not like. I think everyone's gone about where I would have picked them except for Moss...I would have waited a bit for him....but the logic on picking Moss makes plenty of sense. Good solid mock so far.

Really like Lynch this year and would have loved if he fell to me.

No problem with Portis though...think he's an ideal late 1st rnd selection: limited downside (what you've seen from him past couple years pretty much a given), with solid upside.

Have to admit that after the top5 RBs, steep drop off, so though still don't like Moss/Brady picks, could see the thinking in going with them as opposed to the next tier of RBs.

Barber's interesting pick to me...a guy who didn't get 1000yds rushing in 1st rnd? But the ranking is about right so hard to argue.

Gore is a guy with tremendous upside (see 06) but personally right now, I'd pass on that b/c of fear of the tremendous downside (see 07).

HATE the Johnson pick...think kid is pretty much done...at best late 2nd-mid 3rd production.

Rethinking the Moss pick (and seeing how the 2nd round has played out), in retrospect it's probably better to take either Brady or a RB at 1.06, as it may have pushed either Owens or Manning to the 2.07 spot (as it's likely that someone would have taken a RB before then). I was picking based on my personal value, but you can see where short-term strategy might cause an unexpected "boon" in an upcoming round.

A few comments so far:

* Like the Moss at 6 pick, takes some balls to do it, but it's simply the best value after the top 5.

* I still like LJ better then most, and would be very happy to land him at 12.

* Lynch at 8 scares me.

a few comments of my own in catching up...

portis right now is a clear #6 for me, and really on a tier with addai and further away from 7 and 8 (barber and lynch). i wouldve taken him at pick 6 or anywhere after.

gore, im not a big fan of. but maybe its just the lions connection, with martz doing jack crap with his RBs there. but of course there was faulk before that. currently i have gore as a borderline 2nd round pick, but maybe i should be going the exact opposite direction. the injury doesnt scare me. hm. interesting.

larry johnson... no interest, period. i said in a piece i wrote last year that i wouldnt draft him at all last year or ever again. personally i stand by that.

I agree completely but then include Gore at 7. I see a clear top 7. Martz throws and Gore catches.

* Lynch at 8 scares me.

Understood, but in the picks defense: In my league he finished as the #15 RB overall, in his rookie year, for a team that has Lee Evans and not much else. On top of that , he missed three games. Give him his avg. FF points in the games he did play for those three he missed and he vaults into the top 10 area...depending on your scoring I'd guess somewhere between 7-9. I'm good with Lynch at 8 overall. As far as sophomore slump...I don't put much stock in that especially in regards to the RB position.

Only real big suprise to me was Lynch at 8. I know his value is going up, but I just can't put a 2nd year back into the top 10 just yet. It could be one of those huge payoff picks though if it works out..I love Westbrook at 4 even without PPR he is simply one of the best players in the league. I agree with those of you who said Steven Jackson could be the best player this year, I'd take him over AP right now. I love JSscotts picks on the swing, Gore could turn into a top 5 back if a few things fall into place and Wayne is arguably the most consistent WR in the league over the last few years. Nice work guys, I'll try to add some more comments later

Here is a list of backs that were taken in the first round last year in different drafts, and where they ended up.

SA finished ???

SJax finished 14th

LJ finished 40th

Brown finished 27th (major injury)

Parker 16th

Bush 24th

Maroney 25th

Rudi 47th

Gore 9th

Was Gore really that bad. RB's were brutal last year!

I had Gore last year...9th isn't too bad for how much SF sucked last year, IMO.
