She's 4.5 yrs old and generally well behaved. We handle her behavior by preaching to think about her behavior and make the right choices. Good behavior is rewarded and bad behavior is punished/not rewarded.

 

I've gone to pick her up from school about 6 times in the last month only to find her sitting in a punishment chair. So, tonight I gave her 5 swats on the butt to drive home the point.

 

I now want to slit my wrists.

I agree 100% with this. All sitting them in time out does is allow them to know that there is no real punishment for their actions other than a stern talking to and time out.

There are other ways of handling things. For example, a friend of mine was having trouble with his daughter's mouthing off (age7). Mom got so sick of it she disconnected cable as there are so many tv shows with kids with smart mouths. It's working.

 

Now, he has to go to a bar to watch football.  This may be a win-win.

and i will have the same rule for both my brothers. Its not like I abused his kid and I know he won't abuse mine. I guess its all how you grew up. My mom made sure that anywhere we went the adult knew that if we got out of hand they had her permission to spank us. Not beat us. Spank us.

Though I disagree with you that a timeout is not effective, the fact is we have never used the timeout. We have other non-corporal punishments we've been using. I mainly did the spanking today to send a harsher message, to shake things up and to serve as an attention getter-- kinda like the scared straight program where they take rebellious teens through prison to see how awful its gonna be if they get locked up. The real problem is that people stick their kids in a TO for 45 seconds and allow the kid to whine and moan the whole time. A timeout works if it is sucktastically long and the kid is not allowed to speak or complain about the punishment.

 

The one time I utilized the TO everyone was all over me about it. I put her in a dark room on the other end of the house by herself for 35 minutes, sitting in the middle of the floor. This was at my mom's during a family reunion thing and mom and my sisters were ripping on me for being too harsh. I told them the punishment had to suck enough that it would matter to her.

 

As for kids this age not being able to reason about things, get real. My daughter completely understands what we're talking about. She can converse about values pretty fluidly.

35 minutes for a time out is way too long for a 4 year old. Children's attention spans aren't that long, figure one minute for every year of age.

 

That said, five spankings? Seems a little excessive, IMO. While I am all for spanking, it also calls attention to the "other forms of punishment" that you've been using for the last 4.5 years, and obviously, those aren't working.

 

I also disagree that you can't reason with a child. Of course, a two year old, no you can't reason with them, but a 4.5 year old, I think you can.

 

Forgive me for condoning Dr. Phil, but he's right when he says you figure out their currency and use it. My son's currency right now is his huge jar of change in his room. He broke something on my car that I need to fix, and it will of course cost money. He didn't see the value in it until I told him that I would be taking the money out of HIS change jar. You wouldn't believe the affect that had on him. Sometimes, just making him tell his dad is also enough to make him think before he acts.

 

Anyways, I hope the spanking worked and she doesn't end up in the punishment chair again.
