UFC 100

Recommended Posts

The 100th UFC (technically 101st). It is a great card, but I think they could have made it even better. Lesner-Mir is a good one to have on this card. Alves-GSP are the 2 best WWs right now, but it feels like you could have had a GSP-Anderson kind of fight lined up for this one. Or a Anderson vs. a top LHW. But it still is a real good card. Favorites are on the left.

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher - I cannot speak like I know too much about Akiyama, but he seems to be a real good fighter that the UFC is excited to have. His last loss is almost 4 1/2 years ago. All of his 12 wins were finishes inside the 1st round besides 1, which was in the 2nd. :dunno: He is a specialist in Judo and looks to have solid stand up. He is listed as the 10th ranked MW on many sites. Many are excited that he may be a fighter that can give A. Silva a run for his money. Belcher isn't too much of a fighter. He has a solid record of 14-5 but has few quality wins. He beat Dennis Kang by Sub in his last fight, that is a fluke to say the least. Or maybe to give him credit he stayed alive after a beating and Kang kindly gave him his head to yank on. Based on what I do know about Belcher and what I have heard and seen from Akiyama I can get my pick.

Pick: Akiyama 1st round crazy submission I have never heard of.

Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago - This makes the card that much better for me because Fitch is my favorite fighter now since Chuck has retired...for now. Thiago is undefeated and you may remember him KOing the hell out of Koscheck in a huge upset. Cannot say I know a single one of his other wins. They are basically all frm Brazil in small organized fights. He is known for his grappling and submissions. The Kos fight was odd because Paulo looked bad on his feet then he just caught Kos with a clean uppercut. Fitch is the man. The guy is as tough as nails. His last fight was a loss to GSP. He was dominated in that fight, but took it all 5 rounds, and that in itself is pretty impressive when fighting a guy like GSP. Fitch doesn't have the skill of a GSP, Penn, or Alves, but he is a very good wrestler with a good chin and great heart. His standup isn't the best and doesn't look all that great, but he should still have an advantage there in this fight. Fitch is a big favorite, and the only way he loses is if he gets caught on the feet or gets careless on the ground.

Pick: Fitch UD.

Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping - TUF coaches fight. Two different personalities. Dan is calm and cool, while Bisping can talk a lot and be a doosh. Bisping feels he still gets no credit, but I think he gets enough. He has beat Leban, Jason Day, and Matt Hamill in a fight we all know he should have lost. He put up a good fight but lost to Rashad. So he has few good wins, while Hendo is an MMA legand and has fought everyone. Bisping says he is greatly improved, and I believe him. If he is going to be good this is where he should take the next step. Henderson is a Greco Roman wrestler who has unmatched experience. Hendo will look to dirty box and eventually take Bisping down. Bisping will look to technical box and score points with crisp punches. Bisping did look very good in defending the takedown vs. Rashad Evans, and actually took Evans down. I like Henderson in this fight by a mile, but there are some unknowns that could change it all. How much did Bisping improve? He hasn't fought since last summer. Will Henderson hit the wall? He is almost 39. Remeber last TUF season, where Big Nog was a heavy favorite over Mir and then got crapped on? It is a similar situation. Bisping will come in ready and give it his all. But I cannot take him over Henderson on just a hunch that one improved and the other will hit the wall.

Pick: Henderson UD....maybe a SD.

GSP vs. Thiago Alves - For the WW championship...as the commercial says, this is GSPs toughest test yet. He has fought Hughes and Penn, but Hughes was on the downside of his career the last time out and Penn was out of his weight class. Alves is a HUGE 170, he walks around 200+. Alves is a real good striker, with BJJ, and looked very good at stuffing Hughes' takedowns. GSP will look to take it to the ground and GnP to the win. GSP is such a well-rounded fighter that he won't have that much of a disadvantage any where the fight goes. I consider him the best wrestler in the UFC. There are guys that have better backgrounds but GSP time and time again takes people down at will, even great wrestlers. I am hoping Alves rocks him a little to see how GSP responds to getting caught. Alves should look to throw a knee or punch at a shooting GSP. In the end I think GSP gets him to the ground a few times to get the decision or a GnP victory. An Alves win with a Fitch win could set up a title fight between the 2 since Alves lost to Fitch a couple years back. So I will be rooting for Alves.

Pick: GSP 3rd round TKO.

Brock Lesner vs. Frank Mir - Don't have too much to say about this fight. Brock will stand then charge for the takedown. He will get it...Mir will look for a sub...will he get it this time? I have Lesner winning. Wild Card is, Mir's improved standup and Lesner's gained experience since their last fight. I think Lesner has a better chance at staying out of a sub than Mir has of staying off his back. Either way this one ends early.

Pick: Lesner 1st round TKO.

Greatest card UFC had had in a while. 2 great co main events -- then a great rivalry battele Hendo - Bisping and a solid Fitch fight.

right now I think that Machida is the best UFC fighter and it really isn't close other than maybe Anderson Silva and maybe GSP.. A little sad I don't think the 3 will ever fight each other.

can't wait to see Machida - Rampage -- though I think Rampage gets killed.

pumped for this. ;)

Kinda hope Hendo breaks off his arm and beats him with it.

I just can't get that excited about the heavyweight title fight though, and that's a shame..but its just too predictable and there's no one to really challenge.

Wish GSP-Silva had been on this card. Can't wait to see that fight.

If Silva beats Forrest (which I think he will) and GSP takescare of business I could definitely see that happening.

I don't think GSP would have a prayer. Way too small to fight Silva.

Dana wanted each to clean out their division before moving weight. They both did but now all of a sudden each has new competition. GSP has Swick and Kampman. Anderson has new LHW challenges (Griffen for now) to get his fights back to exciting, Maia, Marquardt, Bisping if he wins.

I think if they do shoot for this thing it will be the New Years Eve of Super Bowl card. In the end I am sure Dana wants this fight to happen before Anderson retires, could be one of the biggest fights in history if each continue to win.

Yea he definatly the smaller fighter. Anderson is taller, longer reach, and walks around at 205-210. GSP I bet walks around at 190. GSP would have a chance with his great wrestling, which takedown defense seems to be Anderson's biggest weakness.

It's always the latest and greatest with you, isn't it? Machida beats Evans and all of a sudden he's by far the best fighter in the UFC? I can't wait to hear you declare the best after UFC 100 or whose the best RB in the NFL after week 1.

It''ll be interesting to see if Mir can catch the big dope again and submit him. The size difference is ridiculously unfair, but Mir caught him once already.

I'm afraid I fall into this category as well.

After watching Evans' last couple of fights, I was thinking that he was totally awespome and bound to rule the division for some time. Machida (who I was more-or-less unaware of) absolutely DESTROYED him. It looked like Evans was just some guy pulled from the stands.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Machida isn't a great fighter...just saying, he hasn't even had ONE title defense and Moz already wants to call him the best? C'mon...but that's Moz's move. The last thing he sees is either the best or the worst. He's got thousands of post on the mange bored confirming this.

Mir is actually pretty big. 6'3 about 250. Brock has to weigh 265 the day before but balloons up to 285-295 on fight night.

Evans did look good, but he beat an old Liddell and Forrest. I think Machida is teh real deal and will hold the belt for some time. Machida is a tough matchup for anyone. I actually think Shogun will be a tougher test than Rampage or Rashad was. If both Machida and Rampage win I think Rampage will get creamed in the title fight. I'm definatly not "crowning Machida's Ass" as the best in the UFC or a future all time great just yet. But he sure has looked good.

Hosting a UFC party at my place...but my 3 buddies who I always talk UFC with will be out of town...not sure if any of my other friends are UFC fans.

I might have to lure them to my house with promise of free booze

He isn't the best - Fedor is the best. n He isn't the best UFC ever I think Gracie or Hughes in his prime were. Right now though I see noone that can beat him.

Only Spider would have a shot - they already said they doubt they would fight each other. Rampage his next fight won't go more than a round.

Machida isn't the strongest but I doubt theres a faster striker with both punches and kicks. As good as Evans is everytime he tried to fight with Machida he got destroyed. Rampage is even more reckless and wil be more willing to charge in which is why Machida will win in 1 round maybe less than 2 minutes.

Did anyone else see that special on UFC 100 on Spike last night? Mir is talking way too much shat! I can't believe he seriously said that he's got the advantage in striking. Yeah, Mir, you looked GREAT standing up with Lesnar in your last fight...I mean, it was only a matter of seconds before Lesnar knocked you down each time but other than that...

That is Mir's plan....I think. Talking ######, gets Lesner worked up, and Lesner then goes too fast again and gets caught. Mir looked great in teh stand up vs Nog, much improved. Would I stand if I were Mir? Well what is the other option? I think Mir stands a solid chance on the the feet if he uses technical striking and keeps circling. I think Lesner takes him to the ground eventually, whether he gets frustrated or that is his plan to start.

Lesner's biggest thing is staying calm and taking his time. Mir is already baiting him into another mistake. I think they both talk too much ######. But that is to sell the fight even more. Still think Lesner wins, but I see what Mir is doing. In teh Dan Hardy-Marcus Davis fight at UFC 99, Hardy got under Davis' skin big time and won the fight being about a 2-1 underdog.

After watching, I have a weird feeling about the GSP-Alves fight.

And I will be rooting for Hendo big time. Bisping hasn't even beat anyone that great and he thinks he is some star.

The countdown shows are always pretty good. They have had the UFC's top 100 fight countdown the last 3 nights, the last night is tonight.....if anyone didn't know.

Shiiiite...I've had this popular sports bar try to charge $20 a head for Hopkins/Tarver some years back. That's when I was informed of the fees bars charged for PPV.

no live "sporting event" is ever fun to watch later. It's live! I like to know that when I yell at the screen, I'm not yelling in vain because the outcome has already happened!

also: channelsurfing.net to watch online. They usually just feed justin.tv signals, but that's where I always go.
