"Yahoo's Jason Cole reports that the Saints do not plan on bringing back Reggie Bush in 2010.

Bush's 2010 salary is $8 million -- an exorbitant amount for a change-of-pace back/special teamer. Citing a "Saints insider," Cole reports that GM Mickey Loomis doesn't want to pay Bush's salary even if 2010 is an uncapped season. Battling chronic knee problems, Bush has missed the Saints' last two games. He's averaged just 9.3 touches in his nine 2009 appearances."

I did'nt see that coming...well ok maybe I did. But still a shocker of sorts. Lets see if they draft another RB or think they have the solution in PT and Mike Bell.

I've got a funny feeling we may get more LT to the Saints talk this offseason.

Yea that oughta give fantasy owners fits, worst RBBC nightmare ever.

Where does Bush end up? Where does he fit?

Some silly guesses:

Chicago - They need an explosive change of pace guy to pair with Forte.

Pit - Parker is gone. Bush would work well behind Mendenhaul and as a passing down back.

Philly - I think Westbrook should retire. Bush would excel catching screen passes in that system.

GB - Same thing. The system seems to fit him.

I've been wondering for a long time about Bush's fate. The Saints clearly no longer intend to build an offense around his skills--nor do they need to--and any other use of Bush doesn't justify a $50 million contract. Bush has said he wants to play more; he's been a good sport about his limited role, but it's hard to argue that your team's neglect is a grave mistake when it's 11-0.

I agree that Green Bay is a plausible destination. Titletown Ted Thompson is known for keeping his pockets zipped during free agentry and building through the draft. However, he has also shown a willingness to spend big for a player who is a true difference-maker, as he did when he brought Charles Woodson in. I think the big negative about Bush is that he has trouble staying on the field. I think that's what caused NO to abandon their fantasies of being a souped-up Westbrook.

I've always liked Bush, and I would hate to see his unique skills erode while he spends his prime years as a decoy and return man.

I'd be very surprised if Bush would agree to go to Green Bay. Bush is Hollywood. He's done nothing in the pros to deserve it and is living off his college career and potential only, but Bush still has an ego which will keep him from agreeing to go to Green Bay. If he was willing to go after Kardashian, he believes he's too big time for GB I'm sure. Bad fit.

I'm a Saints fan and I actually hope he does get out of town for his own good. His role has really diminished this year and he

hasn't really been given much of a oppurtunity at being a "RB". More a 3rd down back/WR role for him in the limited time he

has played.

I saw improvement in his inside rushing skills on his few attempts and would be curious to see how he would fare if given the lead role.

his other key is that you don't restructure your contract to get less $$$ when you're only 24yrs old. granted, his health has been questionable, but he seems to be getting back [until this past week's absence?]

his fits are numerous, with some making sense and some making fantasy owners rave:

packers, eagles---high octane west coast systems; screen passes

seahawks---need a hb, west coast offense, paul allen has the $$$$$$ and inclination to pay to win

chargers---tomlinson done, is reggie an answer?? rivers in two-back passing set featuring reggie and sproles is sick

colts---polian has usually kept a 4-5yr rule on hbs [ie faulk, edge]; they also usually only grow/draft their talent; if healthy with manning, what could he produce??

redskins---offense could be overhauled from coach to qb to hb; snyder has the $$$$$$ and inclination to pay to win

I'd like to see him in Pittsburgh. They need a PR and KR and with Parker gone next year, a decent back behind Mendenhall.

Kind of harsh.

3,600 yards and 30 TDs in 47 games is actually pretty good. Sure, it's not amazing for the #2 pick, but he is averaging 1,200 yards and 10+ TDs per 16 games played.....While not super elite, he is a VERY useful player.

And lets face it. The Saints are the ultimate spread it around team. Last year Brees passed for 5,000 yards without a 1,000 yard receiver....Last years leading rusher averaged 8 carries a game.

And yeah, Bush dates someone famous, but I read plenty of gay celeb gossip and I really don't see or hear a ton out of Reggie Bush as far as that scene goes.

What I mean is he's done nothing in the pros to deserve the reputation he thinks he has. He's been decent/good when healthy, but has fallen far from the expectations coming out of college. But I think he still hears those voices in his head about how good he was coming out of USC and going into the pros, he still thinks that he's that guy who was supposed to revolutionize the RB position and become the best player in the league.

Heres a clip from a PFT article back in October.

Reggie Bush says Saints can go undefeated

Posted by Mike Florio on October 28, 2009 7:36 AM ET

Bush's opinion needs to be put in perspective. When discussing the criticism he has faced since entering the NFL and not performing like this generation's Gale Sayers, Bush seemed to predict that he'll eventually be named the league's MVP.

"Once I do win an NFL MVP, once we do win a Super Bowl, once I am in the Pro Bowl, it's going to be that much more special because of all the criticism that I had to come through and because of the work I've put into it, it'll mean that much more to me and I'll appreciate it more," Bush said.

Though the Saints currently have the inside track to the NFC Championship, Bush has a long way to go to draw a single MVP vote.

He has 175 yards rushing (3.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He also has 144 yards receiving, and zero scores. And he's averaging a paltry 4.1 yards on punt returns.

So the Saints are very, very good. And their achievement is even more impressive in light of the fact that they used the second overall pick in the 2006 draft on a glorified third-down back.

"I, I, me, me, my, I'm, I'll, mine, I, etc."...nothing's changed except for the fact that he's just an average/decent player.

makes sense to me.

PT can catch the ball out of the backfield and Mike Bell has proven to be a good runner this year. a PT/Bell combo works just fine. That offense won't miss Bush and they really won't need to bring anyone else in.

no sense in paying him that much money

Also what's interesting is that I believe Pierre Thomas is in the final year of his rookie contract. I wonder how all those TD's that Bell scabbed are going to affect his contract negotiations...?

SOME team may give up a couple picks to sign him to a restricted deal. Forget Bush, where would Thomas fit?

Meh.

Sure he speaks of bigtime personal goals, but he also speaks of going undefeated and winning the Super Bowl. I have no problem with a guy setting big goals and being super confident.

IMO, It would be a bigger red flag if he was happy and satisfied being a 3rd down back.

Reggie bush got a 6 year 52 million dollar contract and for that money he was expected to be a 15-20 carriy a game RB who was a three down guy. In essense he was supposed to be doing what chris Johnson or MJD is doing now...........They are small backs like bush so I just dont understand why bush has so much trouble lining up and running between the tackles. Every week it is the same thing........get the ball and run towards the side line trying to turn the corner and break open a long run. Reggie is a RB who is either scared or unable to man up and run the ball in a power run game. The saints should get rid of him as the money spent on him is wasted. there are alot of fast wr/rb hybrd guys who can fill the rold bush is doing and do it for 1/5 the money. Imagine that money they wasted on reggie bush being spent to sign an elite pass rusher to add to that defense. The saints have two good Rbs who run between the tackles and they have four solid wrs in colston, meacham, henderson, and moore when healthy. Bush is just not needed.

Really, the Saints shouldn't have wasted such a high pick on any RB. They aren't built that way. They are the ultimate spread it around team. Do I think Bush would be an MJD/CJ type back if he got the ball 20 times a game? No. But it's hard to prove since he's never gotten the opportunity.

Most would argue that RB's need carries to find a groove. Bush has never gotten that chance. Only 5 times has he gotten more than 15 carries in a game and in those games he averages 4.6 yards per carry:

20 for 126 yards. 1 TD.

19 for 97 yards.

21 for 67 yards

17 for 72 yards

18 for 73 yards 1 TD

If we add in receptions and look at games he got 20 touches in we get a better sample size of what type of player Bush could potentially be:

22 for 119 yards

20 for 86 yards

21 for 109 yards

22 for 149 yards

30 for 119 yards

25 for 141 yards

22 for 73 yards

24 for 115 yards

27 for 104 yards

22 for 163 yards

29 for 148 yards

What I see there is a very productive player. A destructive weapon when he gets touches. In those games, he averaged 24 touches for 120 yards a game. That would come out to 1,920 yards over a 16 game season. Last season ADP lead the league with 1,885 yards.

What does all this mean? Not sure. But I'd love to see what Bush could do if on a team that was dedicated to giving him 20 touches a game.

this is the problem with the nfl fandome...You are a saints homer and you cant seperate my hatred for reggie bush with the saints team. I am trashing reggie bush here, not the saints. Regardless, he is overpaid for what he does..........valuable? Sure. worth the 6 year $52 millon contract he got? No. he is getting #1 stud top ten Rb money and he is not one. ADP got a 6 year 40 million deal and he is worth every penny.......you think reggie bush is more valuable than peterson and worth 12 million more? LOL. This is about the salary cap and bush being overpaid. you are wasting 52 mill over six years on a guy who is not the #1 RB on the team and not even the #1 wr..........better hope the saints win it all this year..because bush is gonna put them in cap hell with his over price bench warming injury prone arse.

P.S. No one will ever give him a 20 carry deal with a new big time contract....he has proven he is injury prone and unwilling to run between the tackles like a "real' RB.

Reggie Bush is underused. He'll be a huge asset to any team that gets him.

I think the Saints are crazy to get rid of the guy.

Doesn't anybody realize that a lot of the offense, having WR/TE wide open is because the RB is such a threat out of the backfield to take it to the house everytime.

I would be ecstatic if the Pats got Bush.

I'm also ecstatic anytime I get bush.

Eventually people finally gave up defending Michael Vick (quarterbackwise). The same will happen with Reggie Bush (runningbackwise), although for some on this bored we will probably be seeing Reggie Bush the Fourth plowing into the pile for a 2 yard gain for the expansion London Crookedsmiles before it actually happens.

Either way, how many backs in the league next season have an 8 million dollar cap hit? Of course they aren't going to keep him around at that figure.

I'm not talking about the money. Saints should release him for sure. But as a player, he is underrated.

Can't compare the 3.

MJD - 5' 7", 210 lbs. - Actually built like a brick sh!thouse but he's short. Typical RB lower body.

Bush - 6' 0", 200 lbs. - Built like a WR. His legs are twigs. He's not all that quick. He's not overwhelmingly fast.

C Johnson - 5' 11", 200 lbs. - Built like a WR. Enjoying a career year imo. He's lightning quick with great RB instincts. He has world class speed.

you are right...cant compare the three.............CJ and MJD actually produce and are worth every penny they are paid. Bush is an overpaid decoy. MJC even called him out and said he was the leagues highest paid decoy.

Some of the above criticisms of Bush are unjustified. Bush was not drafted as an every-down back, and started only 14 times at USC. Bush has blinding speed and accelerates rapidly. He has run the 40 as fast as 4.33. His quickness is practically supernatural. He is as big as Drew Brees and is not afraid to hit people. He runs the plays they call in the huddle; Bush has had success running between the tackles, and has often said he wants to run inside more.

Reggie's chief problem is his injury-proneness, The Saints have developed lots of other weapons and no longer feel the need to tailor an offense to the unique skills of a guy who can't stay on the field. I believe there are other teams that would take that risk, although the price tag may be too high.
