We're on the board. :pointstosky:

First half was downright ugly, but our defense did not break in the red zone. Second half wasn't pretty either, but we made enough plays to get the job done. It was good to see us get the TD after that impressive Dixon run (yet again) was called back. Smith had an nice pass to Crabtree for a score, but he also overthrew Morgan on what probably would have been a TD. The O-line wasn't helping, as he didn't seem to have a lot of time to throw. Against any other team, this wouldn't be enough, but thankfully we came through with a win.

San Fran fans... is this Dixon situation a vulture situation that Gore owners need to be worried about? This happened early in the year, and I see he ran another one in today. What's Dixon's role here?

Nah nothin to worry about until the season is out of hands then maybe he'll get more reps.

Dixon is just there to spell him. That Dixon run came right after Gore broke loose for 64 yards, they were just giving Frank a breather. He only had one other carry today, and 0 last week, so there's nothing to worry about. Our problem is getting close to the end zone in the first place.

Maiocco: Underachieving 49ers' Season Falls Apart

http://www.csnbayarea.com/10/24/10/img-srchttpcsnbayareacomcommonglobal_ima/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=337974&feedID=5936

Quarterback Alex Smith sustained a significant sprain to his left AC joint that forced him out of action early in the third quarter. Smith wore his left arm in a sling after the game. It is similar -- but perhaps not as severe -- as the grade 3 separation he experienced in 2007 to his throwing shoulder.

Panthers' 275-pound defensive end Charles Johnson beat 49ers rookie right tackle Anthony Davis on the inside to sack Smith for an 8-yard sack. Johnson's full body weight then landed on Smith's left shoulder. Smith said the 49ers called a seven-man protection on the pass play. The 49ers should've been able to properly protect Smith on the play.

After Smith's exit, the 49ers demonstrated little confidence in backup David Carr. And Carr did little to earn more confidence when he completed just 5 of 13 passes for 67 yards with a costly interception late in the fourth quarter.

Maiocco: 49ers Notebook

http://www.csnbayarea.com/10/24/10/49ers-Notebook-Panthers-Rookie-WRs-Rise-/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=338001&feedID=5936

Changes Ahead?

Coach Mike Singletary would not commit to any dramatic changes until he had a chance to view the video on the flight, he said. "Right now, I got to look at the film and see what's what and make moves afterward," Singletary said. "I wouldn't dare sit here and say, 'We'll move this guy here or there' without looking at the film." Among the players who had a particularly rough game was rookie right tackle Anthony Davis, whom defensive end Charles Johnson beat on the play in which quarterback Alex Smith was injured.

Fast Start

The 49ers did not score an opening-drive touchdown in Jimmy Raye's 19 games as offensive coordinator. Under new coordinator Mike Johnson, the 49ers have scored touchdowns on three of their first four opening drives. But after an impressive start to the game, the 49ers stalled. Smith hit Vernon Davis with a 53-yard pass to the 1-yard line. Then, he found Davis for a 1-yard score. The 49ers moved 74 yards on four plays to open the game. After that, the 49ers managed just 208 yards of total offense on 56 plays. "I don't know if we're coming out scoring and feeling good about ourselves," Smith said. "We have put together some good opening drives. (But) we have failed to follow them up."

Notable

The 49ers' main offensive personnel group was a three-wideout formation. Smith said the Panthers do a good job against two-back offenses, and they are more "static" against three receivers. The 49ers used three wides on 40 of their 56 offensive plays. . . . Defensive end Ray McDonald recorded his first interception and the second touchdown of his career. "It was my second touchdown in two years, so I'm proud of that," he said "But we came out to win today. We just aren't finishing games." . . . The pass rush generated very little pressure on Moore. Caroline entered the game having allowed 17 sacks in five games. But the only sacks the 49ers managed came from Clements on a blitz from the slot.

It is what it is, we have Seahawk fans who have never won anything making fun of us.. This is truly what we are..

Let Troy Smith be the 1 and promote Nate Davis to the 2, there is nothing to lose and we may as well see what we have.

I still contend that not going after McNabb was the biggest mistake we made this season.

I mainly feel bad for Frank Gore.. Possibly the best back in franchise history being completely wasted by pure ineptitude.

It's true, but in my main PPR league, Gore is a fantasy machine, third in the league in RB points. :pointstosky:

Surprise!

Alex Smith out, Troy Smith to start

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5732324

With quarterback Alex Smith ruled out because of a separated shoulder, San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary is gambling on Troy Smith being able to turn his struggling team around.

Singletary said Wednesday the former Heisman Trophy winner will get his first NFL start in three years after Alex Smith was ruled out for 2 to 3 weeks with a separated left shoulder. The Niners play the Denver Broncos at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Singletary picked the former Ohio State standout ahead of David Carr, who came on against Carolina after Alex Smith was injured on Sunday but threw a costly late interception that led to the winning field goal for the Panthers.

"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "I talked to David Carr about it. He understands. We had a couple of conversations about it. That's a personal thing between he and I, and I'm going to leave it there. Troy Smith is our starting quarterback."

Source: Owners 'Grumble' About 49ers' Coaching

The heat is turning up on Mike Singletary after the 49ers lost to Carolina.Sun, Oct 31

Matt Maiocco

CSNBayArea.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Following the 49ers' sixth loss in seven games to open the season, John and Jed York privately expressed displeasure about the team's coaching to their "inner circle," a team source told Comcast SportsNet on Sunday.

"There were some grumbles from the owners about bad coaching," the source said.

Coach Mike Singletary was signed to a four-year contract after guiding the 49ers to a 5-4 finish in 2008 as the interim coach. But the 49ers went 8-8 last year, and are off to a 1-6 start this season.

Team president Jed York, the son of owner John York, declared the 49ers would still win the NFC West even after the club lost its first five games of the season.

York told CSN Bay Area on Oct. 11 that he had not addressed Singletary's job security inside the organization. When asked if he is committed to Singletary as coach for the remainder of the season, York answered, "Mike's our coach."

Following York's guarantee, the 49ers broke through with a 17-9 victory over the Raiders.

But the 49ers, a consensus preseason pick to win the NFC West this season, fell to 1-6 on Sunday with a 23-20 loss to the previously winless Carolina Panthers. The Seattle Seahawks lead the division with a 4-2 record.

The Yorks spoke to those close to them as the team departed Charlotte en route to London, where the 49ers are schedule to play the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium next week.

The 49ers struggled in every phase of the game Sunday, and again had a number of crucial breakdowns. The Panthers, who entered with the NFL's last-ranked offense, out-gained the 49ers 379 yards to 282.

When asked after the game if the 49ers are simply not a very good team, Singletary answered, "There's no doubt in my mind, somehow, someway, we will regroup and we will keep fighting and we will make a season of it. And I still believe we can go to the playoffs. I still believe we can get those things done. We just have to get the right things in place and go from there."

So...how about that Troy Smith feller?

12/19 196 Yards

1 TD

0 Ints

0 Fumbles

0 Sacks

2 Yards Rushing

1 Rushing TD

115.2 QB Rating

Earned a second start that's for sure. Pretty soft schedule coming up too.

49ers claim Thaddeus Gibson off waivers.

49ers claimed OLB Thaddeus Gibson off waivers from the Steelers.

Gibson, who ill-advisedly left Ohio State after his junior year, was a fourth-round pick in April. He contributed nothing on special teams or defense in Pittsburgh and will be viewed by the 49ers as a long-term project.

I like it after losing Briggs this year. Probably go to our practice squad? :dunno:

On a related topic, after Sunday's performance, I think Lawson may have secured his extension. Dude was a beast out there.

In addition, Heitman has been put on Injured Reserve.

Looks like we have the 7th pick over all maybe. Do we draft a DE there? Trade up for Andrew Luck or trade down for more picks? I'm personally always a fan of trading for more picks - it's what Walsh did, it's what Belechik does and they come at less cost than the earlier picks. I haven't followed much of college this year, so who do you want or think the niners will go for?

Vernon Davis is dumb:

'We really deserved that.' -- TE Vernon Davis on NFC West title

Wrong team made the playoffs, Niners say

By David White, San Francisco Chronicle

The 49ers president Jed York said he thinks the 49ers would be in the playoffs had he made a coaching change sooner, promoting Jim Tomsula sooner. San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis said the 49ers were better than the Seahawks, who finished a game ahead of the 49ers and won the division title. That prompted a hilarious response from Ben Hamilton, the Seahawks left guard who suffered a season-ending concussion on Oct. 31. Hamilton tweeted: "I don't think that word means what you think it does, enjoy your offseason!"

I'd say it really depends on the HC we land. If Harbaugh is the one, then I have to think we wind up doing whatever it takes to get Luck. But I really, really want us to target a first round CB like Patrick Peterson.

I'm guessing Peterson or Prince Akumura will be a Niner.

Maybe try to snatch Cam Newton in the second round?

I don't care what anybody says, if he avoids Vince Younging it on his wonderlic there is no way he falls past Seattle at 21. He'll be gone in the first 15

Well...all signs point to Harbaugh taking his talents to South Beach.

I honestly wouldn't mind offering 5 mil to Billick.

Josh McDaniels...I'll take him for a OC...but head coach? York is going to need riot gear ready.

Yeah I agree. I totally would take Billick, give him a 3 year deal for 15 or something along those lines. I'd totally be cool with McDaniels as the OC too but definitely not HC. I know it's been stated that a prior SB winning coach has never taken another team to win a SB, but all i really care about is getting into the big dance. If Billick or the next coach can just change this organization around back to it's winning ways that's all I care about. To me, it's a one-two year plan to get us consistently contending for the NFC and from there players will start to want to come to SF again because right now they don't. I don't care about Super Bowls right now, I just want to be in the playoffs. 8 losing seasons needs to change for some a storied franchise.

Here's my rant on Jed York.

Pete Carroll signed for 5.7 a year.

Going into the negotiations, the initial offer should START at 5.75. You need to help him get a final little jab at USC like he probably wanted to.

What does York and Baalke do? Offer 4.5 million a year?! Are you serious?

I am not surprised the Dolphins GM jumped on a plane right when he heard the Niners' offer. 4.5 million for the hottest FA football coach this offseason? Yea, we can match that and throw in 3 mil more.

I'm not mad that they didn't match the 7.5 or 8 mil offer the dolphins gave. But I am definitely questioning the way the meeting went if 4.5 was the offer. Would Harbaugh have accepted right away if they offered 6 from the start? we'll never know.
