how screwed will San Fran be if this happens?

Randy Moss will not be happy if he has no quarterback throwing to Randy Moss. I thought they should have made a strong play for Flynn. He is moldable, would allow Harbaugh to control the play calling, and could manage the team on the field well. Manning will not give up control to Harbaugh nor vice versa. Smith is going to Mia, and there are not enough QBs in the draft.

I have a feeling the Niners are coming down to earth this year.

If we lose out on both Manning & Smith quite possible we'll see what last years 2nd round pick, right after QB Dalton, Colin Kaepernick can do. If he plays as well as Dalton did last year I think we'll be fine. Maybe not go to the SB, but ya never know. They liked Kaepernick enough to draft him in the 2nd round and must have thought he could be their QB of the future and there was no talk OR knowledge about Manning back then. I wouldn't be unhappy about seeing what this kid can do and would stand behind him and give him my support. Our team is improving and I think that will continue no matter who's at QB. Just that with Manning I see our chances of winning a SB sooner than if we had to start Kaepernick.

 As a fan of a team (Dolphins) that was a perennial loser, then came out of nowhere to win the division with a rookie head coach, and then went back to being a perennial loser, I'd like to caution 49er fans about being too optimistic about Smith's return. Maybe the light has finally come on, maybe some coaching staff stability and the addition of Moss and Manningham will help, but don't be surprised if they come back down to earth this season.

I like how they played it. Smith got too big for his britches, so they openly court Manning. I'm sure Alex realized he wasn't going to get much more going to a less talented team, so he comes back to the Niners like a battered spouse and brings his focking shine box with him.

Niners were never worried. I bet they could have been just as successful with Garrard or Orton.

Also, I want to state again that I like the results, but Manning made a mistake. He and the Niners could have easily reached the Superbowl this year.

I think Smith comes out on top here -- the 49ers need him now, unless they want to rely on a 2nd year guy or a journeyman to start for them. Not that he'll get Manning money, but I think he will get more than they were offering him before. Won't know until the numbers are released, but he'd be goofy to not hold out for more money, especially with another team courting him.

Alex Smith will sign with the 49ers - per ESPN

Link? I have not seen anything that says a deal is done.

That's what Colin Cowherd said on ESPN radio when he was breaking the story that Peyton was going to Denver, so it could be inaccurate.

Colin Cowherd probably tops my list of people who talk about sports but know nothing about sports.

Only thing I've seen is some idiot source from the 9ers saying 2 things:

- We feel confident we can bring Alex Smith back into the fold

- The Super Bowl or bust attitude in San Fran was put off for Peyton Manning, causing him to sign with Denver <_<

And then there's Deion Sanders' dumb ass...
