This is so far from the truth, it doesn't even register... Stephen is in charge now. Stephen and Will McClay are running the show now here - and they are not paying AP, or any rb, that kind of money - boner or not.

 

As Mike Fisher put it this morning: "Jerry is now the (still-powerful) Queen of England. Stephen (assisted by McClay/Garrett) is the Cowboys Prime Minister."

 

I think Dallas is set (and very comfortable) setting their sites on drafting a rb - adding a back up veteran maybe to compliment them. I'd love to see Gurley or even Tevin Coleman here - and totally agree with the philosophy.

Dumb move by Kelly imo. I was waiting to see how his other moves turned out in case he had some great master plan but this one was just stupid.

 

Trade shady because he costs too much and then go out and sign the top guy on the market, after paying a decent amount for another one of the better free agent running backs out there? Makes no sense. And the guy is injury prone and coming off a season where he touched the ball damn near 500 times including the playoffs.

 

I don't know what Kelly was thinking - maybe he thought the opportunity was too good to pass up even if it wasn't his original plan to go after Murray. But I have a feeling he will regret that choice

this is where chip looks less like a guru and more like a tinkerer. murray's salary is $8.4M. mathews is just shy of $4M. IIRC, sproles' number bumps to $3M in 2015. so that's $15M/year for the position group, when the ostensible point of dumping mccoy was to free up cap space.

 

granted, gaining murray hurts the cowboys, so that's some added value. but it just seems like short sighted flailing rather than coherent teambuilding.

There were plenty of cheap free agents who would have been fine in his system. Roy helu would have been good for that system imo. Pierre thomas would have been good also. Running backs do not matter at all in relation to championships. As long as the offense has a good scheme and there is a competent rb on the roster, the running game will be fine.

So... they are spending a first on a RB? That's the latest on the airwaves, Gurley, Gordon, or maybe even the Nebraska kid may not be there in the second round. Don't understand why they'd not pay $6 mill for a RB yet spend an invaluable first rounder on one. I personally would've liked to see them triple down and go OT in the first to get Free's replacement, yet they would've needed Murray to do that.

PT is not a power back, but helu might be able to fill that role. He was 215 pounds coming out of college. Maybe helu isnt the prototypical power back, but he has great catching ability which makes him a valuable multifaceted option. Not saying murray isnt. I just think the two examples i gave were two rbs who would work fine in that system for a lot less money.

 

Maybe chip wins a SB and the reason is because of the rb, proving everyone wrong. I personally think he has ruined the eagles, even though his perception around the league may have saved him from signing old man Gore.

I think Chip panicked when Gore changed his mind. But the Eagles got a very good RB, and a solid backup to spell him. All while cutting the legs off of the division winner. I like the move. Demarco got 500 touches last year and stayed relatively healthy. Why can't he stay healthy this year with 300 touches?

 

Also, Shady has 600+ more career touches than Demarco.

that's a double-edged argument. the reason mccoy has so many more touches is that he has been robust enough to play for entire seasons.

 

so it's difficult to conclude that the more injury-prone back is going to be more durable (which is kinda what the touch argument is all about).
