Bar rescue bars

Recommended Posts

Anyone been to one? I went to the steam punk place in Austin and it was a shithole. Right between the Salvation Army and a soup kitchen. There are a thousand bars two block over, I don't think the theme was the problem.

Anyone have experience with the Jon taffer bars he rehabbed?

The bar my friends and I used to frequent when we were in college was featured on that show. One of my buddies still lives about 1.5 miles from the place. The place was the sh*t when we were in college in the late 80's. They catered to the college kids and it worked. Packed almost every night. I don't know what happened but at some point they stopped catering to the college kids and it went to hell. Went through a bunch of owners and themes, and ended up with some dude who "just always wanted to own a bar." I don't think his name was Ed. But it turned out his staff was stealing from him big time. They caught it on tape. The owner was a pushover and Taffer basically had to force him to fire the guy. Anyways, they did the makeover and stuff but the owner was an idiot and it went belly up not too long after.

Place is called Weber's Place on this list:

That's too bad. They could have won an Emmy if they could save that place.

The guy who co-owned or managed Tropical Isle (Home of the Hand Grenade) in the French Quarter tried to open his own place. He stole a lot of the ideas that made Tropical Isle successful and they sued him.

Taffer came in and changed the place up but it still failed. Sounds like he doesn't have that good of a success rate.

Wasn't that signature drink like $15? I would pay that much in New Orleans

I think the hand Grenades cost $8. Same with Hurricanes at Pat O's. I don't remember what he tried to sell his for.

Piratz Tavern is a bar about a mile from my house and I went there once. What a sh1thole. Perhaps the best bar rescue show ever.

So many delusional bar owners out there. That show is a bit over-the-top with the set-up/staging confrontations with Taffer, but if you are in your forties, have a daughter about to go to college and have to live in your parents basement because you can't afford to pay yourself a salary....you may want to rethink your current situation.

Being successful in the bar biz is tough no matter what. Most places that are featured on that show, the outcome is generally inevitable regardless of what Taffer does.

He was a loser looking for a bunch of buddies. The waiters came into the bar hungover, unwashed, dressed in pirate costume and were required to give crap to the patrons. Obviously it had the makings of a great makeover show, but in reality, people who run dysfunctional businesses, do it because they like it. While he was doing his stuff, the best bar in Silver Spring (and one of the best in the DC area) was directly across the street. The good bar burns in a fire, the bad one magically loses their lease, the good bar moves into his spot, and is killing it.
