What was a typical summer day when you were a kid?

Recommended Posts

Atari (eventually Nintendo), computer games on a big floppy drive, TV.

Play football, a little baseball/stickball, catch random things and kill them whenever my mom threw us out of the house.

Man, how things have changed.

When I was 9-12 I went to a summer camp close to my house. We swam and played ball all day. Went on lots of field trips. There was a mixed bag of us. It was kind of like the land of misfit toys. Mostly kids whose parents worked. But there were also some pretty fawked up kids.

There was Charlie who had an arm with no hand. He just had these little balls that never grew into fingers. He was an angry little bastard that would come up behind you and stick those little nubs in your ear just for the fawk of it. He knew how disgusted we all were with those things. We got into a lot of fights. Getting punched in the face with that arm and nubs was worse than getting punched with a fist. He was really good at Monopoly.

There was Alex (looks just like IGotWorms) and his brother Aaron. Both had really bad cross eyes. It was very hard to hold a conversation about anything with those two. All you can think is "What are you looking at ???"

There was Kevin. He had severe hyperactivity. He thought he was God. Kid would freak out over anything. The counselors would have to tackle him and sit on him till he calmed down. It was always entertaining to set him off and make the counselors earn their pay.

There was Neal. Poor Neal. Neal was slightly retarded. We could never figure out his nationality. He was very dark/tan, had green eyes, and his d!ck was uncircumcised and looked like a small elephant trunk. You never wanted Neal next to you when when you were changing into your swim trunks. He was nice though.

There was a kid who got burned really bad from a hot water heater that blew up next to him. You could see where the coils branded his back. He would swim without a shirt and freak us all out. Whenever I went into my garage, I was scared of the hot water heater.

There was Robbie. Who told us one day at lunch over microwaved hamburgers and burritos that his friend got laid and popped her cherry and there was blood everywhere. I can speak for all of us that were there and heard that conversation: I spent the next year thinking girls had a cherry in their vagina and you needed towels to have sex.

And there were the girls. Mean mean mean. They'd come up with songs. "Bunny is a jerk. Bunny is a jerk. Mussolini pulled his weeny now it doesn't work!!!" Looking back, they wanted it. I just didn't know they wanted it.

And there was Leann Moody (36B) the camp counselor for the girls. The most beautiful woman I ever saw. Blonde hair, tall, slim, blue eyes, and a nice camel toe. Her bathing suit was always going up that crack. If you had the unfortunate experience of seeing Neal's uncircumcised member changing for the pool, you knew you could count on Moody's hatchet wound.

That camp was a lot of fun. My friends got to roam the streets all day and wish they were at the camp. I had a lot of fun those summers.

Did any of you play swing set kamikaze? They had a swing set that was one row with twenty swings on it. If all the swings were in use, we'd run through them and try not to get hit. Stoopid, but fun.

Brother was 4 years older...so always had someone to watch after me.

Typically he and a few of his friends and a few of mine would walk thru our back yard and a couple other yards to go to the baseball fields.

Played wiffle ball with 2nd base being home plate...backstop like the "green monster" .

That was when I was not already at baseball practice or games.

Other than that...in and out of each other's houses playing crap like atari, intellivision, coleco...or something...then later than commodore 64.

Ride our bikes to the convenience store...get some candy...or sneak off with a playboy.

buy and trade baseball cards...the typical crap

When I got older I spent my summers playing baseball. But when I was younger I would either be at the pool, at the beach, riding bikes with my friends, playing with fireworks, playing a pick up game of football, basketball, or baseball, exploring in the woods, playing hide and seek, fishing, ect. I was always outside doing something. Never spent my summer days inside unless it was raining. Kids these days will spend all their time inside playing games and don't enjoy the outdoors. When I have kids they will be playing outside just like I used to even if I have to take off work and play outside with them.

From time to time we would jump a gay or black. Beat them good. Mostly fishing and swimming though, with a little shoplifting thrown in.

Wiffleball in my backyard as well with about 5 other neighborhood kids (3 v 3 with ghost runners!@#!). My backyard was perfect as it was fenced in and there were three trees exactly where the bases would be and at 11 - 12 years old the fence was where it was hard to hit over but you could if you caught one for a HR. Most every afternoon was spent playing wiffle ball.

The rest of the time was either on a bike (Mongoose with the large pegs) or a skateboard (Lance Mountain board), or trading/collecting baseball cards with my buddies. A little Atari / Nintendo thrown in too.

It was your typical American childhood looking back.

Mongoose Pro Class.

Worked at a bike shop from 13 till 17 or so. Captain / stud of our race team. Great times

We were on our bikes a lot...usually causing trouble but mostly nothing real bad. Also a lot of time spent at the neighborhood park, partying and playing FB, Basketball, softball, hackey sack.
