WhiteWonder 2,734 Posted February 25, 2016 I tried to give as much info as I could in the recruitment threads on the geek board, but honestly I am probably the least tenured owner in this league (and I think this is my 5th year) So please new owners ask any questions you can think of in this thread and someone will answer And veterans, any nuances you think the new guys need to know please feel free to post. Jim Mora 34 Posted February 25, 2016 There's a lot of good info in the threads from last season; take a look at the first and second rounds to get an idea of how the draft plays out. (on the blue toolbar on the forum, from the "custom" dropdown menu, change "timeframe" to "show all.") Trading is highly encouraged, and likely necessary for some of those spots where you are lacking an exclusive or option. Traded players are available on your roster, but if you drop them, they're back in the pool and only eligible to those teams they've played for. You can trade your supplemental draft picks, but not your regular draft picks - those are set in stone. 1 AB or .1 IP are all that are required at the major league level. Example: When Matt Garza was traded by the Cubs to the Rangers, he was eligible for both Mung and I to draft (along with MIN and TB, and later MIL). The Cubs received Justin Grimm, Mike Olt, Carl Edwards, and Neil Ramirez from the Rangers in the trade. This season, I can draft both Grimm and Olt (as they had appearances for the Rangers), but not Edwards nor Ramirez, as they were never called up to the majors before the trade and therefore never accrued any stats with TEX. Any player invited to spring training with your club is eligible for you to draft, even if he does not yet have a regular season AB or IP for your squad - that's the only exclusion to the rule above. However, if he doesn't make the team, you'll forfeit his rights. Example: Mookz has the option to draft Yovani Gallardo, even though he doesn't have a regular season IP yet for BAL. However, if he were to fail a physical and the team waived him before the start of the season, Mookz would have to cut him from his team, and only I could pick him up off waivers unless he signs with an eligible team before I get to him. Also for the new guys, thanks for decreasing my chances of landing Marlon Byrd.

lambert58 71 Posted February 26, 2016 I can grab kris Bryant and schwarber in the later rounds.. You have a lot of exclusives. Starling Castro comes to mind. No one has the Yankees so he is exclusive to you as well.

shotsup 832 Posted February 26, 2016 You have a lot of exclusives. Starling Castro comes to mind. No one has the Yankees so he is exclusive to you as well. And if someone had the yankmees Castro still hasn't had a Major League AB for the spanks therefore exclusive to the Cubs. Correct ?

WhiteWonder 2,734 Posted February 26, 2016 And if someone had the yankmees Castro still hasn't had a Major League AB for the spanks therefore exclusive to the Cubs. Correct ? incorrect. i know your guys heads are probably spinning right now. I know the feeling. the one exception to the rule of needing to have 1AB or .1 inning pitched for a team is if that player was a recent addition to the team in the offseason and is expected to accrue stats this year. example for you is Neil Walker. He is available to you because he is now on the Mets, even though he doesnt have any stats for them... yet.
lambert58 71 Posted February 26, 2016 And if someone had the yankmees Castro still hasn't had a Major League AB for the spanks therefore exclusive to the Cubs. Correct ? That is not correct. The rules state that if it is reasonable (Castro being traded to the Yankees and on the active roster) then he is eligible for that team. Put it this way, you can draft players like Heyward and Lackey this year because it is reasonable they will play for the Cubs. They were traded/signed by the cubs and are currently on their roster. You would not be able to draft Albert Pujols for example. Even though the Cubs "could" trade for Pujols, it is not reasonable to assume so. Hope this helps clarify things. EDIT: Sorry, I got your team mixed up with mungwater.. Same thing applies but use WW's example.. Mungwater - if you have any questions about this. I have a decent response. lambert58 71 Posted February 27, 2016 Does anyone have some time to explain about picking ahead to Shotsup and Mungwater. They might be curious why we could be picking in round 2 when we haven't made our 1st round pick yet. I would do it but I want to try and finish the rounds threads. Thanks. They might be curious why we could be picking in round 2 when we haven't made our 1st round pick yet. I would do it but I want to try and finish the rounds threads. Thanks. Mora kind of did this but during this regular draft you can see which of your players are eligible to other teams and where those teams fall. So like in the instance of the Greinke pick Ted was able to "jump ahead" and make his selection knowing that player wasn't eligible to any other team still yet to pick before him. Therefore he made his selection. The stress point we made last year or the year before after several bad situations was that once you make a pick you only have a reasonable 10-15 mins to change it by a post edit and comment if you decide to. However if ANY pick is posted after that it is final and unable to be changed. Regardless of if that pick is higher or lower in the order. Don't make a pick at midnight, wake up, see no new picks and second guess your pick and attempt to change. With the different schedules and timezones someone is already probably planning their next moves because they've seen it. Alerts and such. ..
WhiteWonder 2,734 Posted February 27, 2016 i have been talking back and forth with Shotsup and this topic came up. I explained how the dodgers were able to pick without the teams before him picking. I have not had as much one on one communication with Mungwater. Maybe someone can take Mung under their wing via PM's... I would offer to do it but I don't really want to "coach" two rooks through this at the same time while also trying to get my own ducks in a row.

I'll complete the season, it just painful to think I might have to put Bryant/schwarber/Russell/rizzo on the block for some pitching. Hate to be watching all the games rooting not to hit a HR.
