Healthy Eating

Recommended Posts

I love pasta with olive oil. I really enjoy garlic olive oil also. I have a bottle of avocado oil i havent tried yet so i will be experimenting soon. In regards to pasta, i am trying to really limit the carbs right now. I suppose once i get to my lowest achievable weight i will add pasta back in more often. Throw some grilled chicken on it to reduce the amount of pasta needed to be full.

Eat as few processed foods as possible. The answer is pretty easy but carrying it out is difficult because, yes, you have to prepare pretty much all of your own meals

If you have the money to spend try the service blue apron or there's one called green chef (I think that's the name). They deliver fresh, healthy food with recipes to your door and you cook it

Also, what type of seminars have you given? Who was your audience?

I agree with pretty much everything DJg has said in this thread and believe he is a nutrition enthusiast but this has to be one of his biggest whoppers yet.

"Here to give a seminar on nutrition is...err...a 27yr old army bro who...is in good shape? Is a good lookin boy? I mean...That makes him qualified right? Give it up for Djgb!"

I think he subscribes to pop nutrition, like the stuff you read in Men's Health or see on shows like Dr Oz. A lot of that information is useful, but some of it is off-base.

Over the years, the trendy diet has switched from low-fat to low carb to high protein, 'primitive' diets like Paleo. Any and all of them can work, but people shouldn't be focusing on that nonsense as much as simple rules like those espoused by Pollan. He specifically critiques the way we've moved away from eating food in favor of food-like sustances enhanced with micro- and macronutrients. Nutrition is far more complex, yet far simpler at the same time. "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants," is his most famous quote, but he has other easy rules for eating:

1. Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. "When you pick up that box of portable yogurt tubes, or eat something with 15 ingredients you can't pronounce, ask yourself, "What are those things doing there?" Pollan says.

2. Don’t eat anything with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can't pronounce.

3. Stay out of the middle of the supermarket; shop on the perimeter of the store. Real food tends to be on the outer edge of the store near the loading docks, where it can be replaced with fresh foods when it goes bad.

4. Don't eat anything that won't eventually rot. "There are exceptions -- honey -- but as a rule, things like Twinkies that never go bad aren't food," Pollan says.

5. It is not just what you eat but how you eat. "Always leave the table a little hungry," Pollan says. "Many cultures have rules that you stop eating before you are full. In Japan, they say eat until you are four-fifths full. Islamic culture has a similar rule, and in German culture they say, 'Tie off the sack before it's full.'"

6. Families traditionally ate together, around a table and not a TV, at regular meal times. It's a good tradition. Enjoy meals with the people you love. "Remember when eating between meals felt wrong?" Pollan asks.

7. Don't buy food where you buy your gasoline. In the U.S., 20% of food is eaten in the car.

Protein deficiency malnutrition is called kwashiorkor. You know those African babies in the Feed the Children commercials, the ones with the swollen bellies? That's kwashiorkor, and it is virtually nonexistent in the developed world. Americans do not need extra protein in their diets. Yet every other yogurt, energy bar, pasta, etc. boasts "Added protein!" Food producers know that concept sells, and people have embraced it just like the low-fat and low carb labels of the past.

Usually lectures are given by experts - people with higher degrees and/or those with special expertise based on research, writing, etc. But some just have a knack for entertaining their audience, with no other qualifications. Dgb must be the latter.

Yea you seem like a quack. Just a little bit of information for you and tan since both of y'all are so retarded and uneducated it's pathetic.

Military has different scopes of practice than civilians do. You do realize that the training I received was far greater than what people on the outside receive right? In the military I'm able to do things that you would not be able to outside of it. Also, in order to give a seminar like I did you do have to do research. What you think I went up there and talked about what I thought without having done any research on the subjects? Lol you're more retarded than I thought. Here's a tip. Stick to what you know. Not what you THINK. Because you don't know sh1t and its obvious. So shut your mouth and keep to yourself

Don't worry about counting carbs. Unless you are diabetic, its probably a waste of time. A healthy diet contains carbs, proteins and fats.

The hostility is coming from me being tired of ignorant a$$holes who have no focking clue what the hell they are talking about. So I'm here to put you in your focking place. If you don't KNOW something then don't try to pass it off like you do. I'm not going to sit here and act like I know everything about everything. I'll be the first to say that i don't know something. There's nothing wrong with it. But when you try to act like you know something about something you have no focking clue about then you came off as a focking ignorant .

It's just that you have a tendency to stretch the truth when it's something you know about. For example, "I am a nutrition enthusiast and took a couple college classes and am in good shape." Turns into "I have given seminars on nutrition and am basically an accredited expert." Which is just simply not true and a "version" of the truth. You can just give advice, you don't need to have a Ph.D. to sound credible.

Dude, protein intake is not an open and shut case. For some reason this topic is almost as heated as religion, which I guess makes sense as a lot of it is based on faith. Nutrition literature is fraught with methodological problems, and it really takes a lot of effort to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I remember Newbie getting bent when I suggested his high protein diet wasn't necessarily making him healthier, even though he liked its impact on his selfies. In addition to your other credentials, you don't happen to be a bodybuilder as well? If so, please avoid the PEDs as they are making you irritable.

This is an opinion piece, but it nicely summarizes the current state of food faddism:

From diet books to news headlines, protein is in, while carbohydrates and fats are out. Without this very important nutrient, we wouldn’t be able to build, maintain and repair the body’s tissues. Of the 20 amino acids that are used to make protein, nine cannot be produced by the body alone. These nine essential amino acids can only be obtained from the foods we eat. But are we eating too much?

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that the average American male consumes 102 grams of protein per day, while the average female eats about 70 grams. That’s almost twice the daily recommended intake established by the Food and Nutrition Board. For most healthy individuals, it’s recommended that 10-15 percent of our daily calories come from protein (about 56 grams for men and 46 for women). This may sound like a lot, but it’s easier to meet those needs than you think. Consider this: One cup of milk (8 grams), a 3-ounce piece of meat (21 grams), 1 cup of dry beans (16 grams) and an 8-ounce container of yogurt (11 grams) provide 56 grams of protein, according to the CDC. That didn’t take much.

Why can too much protein be a problem? For starters, meat is a major source of protein in the American diet, and animal foods high in protein are often high in saturated fat. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), foods high in saturated fat can increase risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. Additionally, people who have a problem processing excess protein may be at risk for kidney and liver disorders and osteoperosis. The AHA does not recommend high-protein diets for weight loss, stating that high-protein diets can “restrict healthful foods that provide essential nutrients and don’t provide the variety of foods needed to adequately meet nutritional needs.” Additionally, if you consume more calories than you burn, any extra calories will contribute to weight gain.

To calculate individual protein needs, it’s important to factor in body weight, physical activity level and health status. The average person who leads a relatively sedentary lifestyle needs about 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. That means if you are healthy, weigh 140 pounds, and occasionally ride your bike to work, you only need about 50 grams of protein per day.

And exercise doesn’t necessarily increase protein needs. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), if you are working out for an hour a few times a week, you probably don’t need to take in extra protein. For endurance and strength-trained athletes, AND recommends consuming 0.5 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily, which can generally be obtained through the diet without the use of supplements.

So what are the best protein sources? While animal proteins usually contain all of the essential amino acids forming complete proteins, eating a varied, plant-based diet can also meet all of your protein needs. One cup of dry beans, for example, contains about 16 grams of protein per serving, while a cup of brown rice contains 5 grams. Together these foods form a complete protein and also provide a healthy dose of fiber — which helps lower cholesterol, promotes regular bowel movements, regulates our blood sugar and helps us feel full. Plant-based proteins also don’t have any saturated fat, and are usually lower in calories.

The take-home message: Before gulping down that protein shake after a workout, or subbing a large steak for carbs and fats at lunch and dinner, calculate your actual needs to make sure the extra protein is really necessary. It’s probably isn’t.

Even if you consider a higher protein goal of 1.2-1.6 kcal/kg body weight, the majority of Americans are still getting enough. So adding extra is probably superfluous, and may be harmful in the long term.

What if you'd taken nutrition classes, earned a degree which describes nutrition to molecular detail, got an MD and published research on metabolism? And provided advice that coincides with that of the AMA, AHA, AND, CDC and probably a few other professional organizations made up of the true experts?

I know being a medic gives you access to all that top secret military nutrition info, but is it possible that I may have a valid point?

I'm not a nutritionist, nor have I ever claimed to be. I've been a physician for over a decade. I started doing research and outpatient care, but switched to hospital medicine.

Funny how you've accomplished so much at such a young age, yet can't comprehend that others can do multiple things over the course of their careers.
