84.8 Deganawida (The Great Peacemaker) - Native American

Known only from oral tradition predating European contact, his timeframe ties to a solar eclipse dating him to either 1142 or 1450. The Great Peacemaker was a prophet who united five tribes of the Senecas, Cayugas, Onondagas, Oneidas and Mohawks into the Iroquois Confederation. (later a sixth tribe, the Tuscarora would join in 1722 after being displaced out of the Carolinas by settlers).

The Peacemaker's message, known as the Great Law of Peace, united the squabbling Iroquoian nations, who were fighting, raiding and feuding with one another and other tribes, both Algonkian and Iroquoian. He ended ritual cannibalism.

According to some legends, initially the Mohawk rejected the message of the Great Peacemaker, so he decided to perform a feat to demonstrate his purity and spiritual power. After climbing a tree high above Kahon:ios (Cohoes Falls), the Great Peacemaker told the Mohawk braves to chop the tree down. Many onlookers watched as the Great Peacemaker disappeared into the swirling rapids of the Mohawk River. They believed he had died but the next morning found him sitting near a campfire. Greatly impressed by the Great Peacemaker's miraculous survival, the Mohawk became the founding tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy.[3]

Among the Iroquois, clan mothers held just as much sway and influence as clan fathers and it was not uncommon to have a female chief. One British colonial administrator declared in 1749 that the Iroquois had "such absolute Notions of Liberty that they allow no Kind of Superiority of one over another, and banish all Servitude from their Territories.

With the formation of the League, internal conflicts were minimized. The council of fifty thereafter ruled on disputes, seeking consensus in their decisions.[40] Raids within the member tribes ended, and they directed warfare against competitors. This allowed the Iroquois to increase in numbers while their rivals declined.[40]The political cohesion of the Iroquois rapidly became one of the strongest forces in 17th- and 18th-century northeastern North America. The confederacy did not speak for all five tribes, which continued to act independently. But about 1678,[40] the council exerted more power in negotiations with the colonial governments of Pennsylvania and New York.[40] Thereafter, the editors of American Heritage write the Iroquois became very adroit at playing the French off against the British,[40] as individual tribes had played the Swedes, Dutch, and English.[40] The editors of American Heritage magazine suggest the Iroquois spokesmen were as politically sophisticated as many a modern politician.[40]

85.1 Black Hawk - Native American

A fierce war leader of the Sauk and allied tribes for many decades, Black Hawk was the last Indian commander leading skirmishes, raids, and battles fought east of the Mississippi culminating in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Upon losing the war, by then estimated to be in his late 60s , he was captured and taken on tour of the cities of the East Coast nd upper Midwest to witness in awe the extent of the grandeur of Early America, his and his entourage's presence drawing great crowds.

Through an interpreter, his was the first Native American autobiography to be published in the U.S., his book became an immediate bestseller and has gone through several editions.

Black Hawk died in 1838 (at age 70 or 71) in what is now southeastern Iowa. He has been honored by an enduring legacy: his book, many eponyms, and other tributes.

----------

In an 1838 address at Fort Madison in the year of his death, he said the following:

It has pleased the
that I am here today— I have eaten with my white friends. The earth is our mother— we are now on it, with the Great spirit above us; it is good. I hope we are all friends here. A few winters ago I was fighting against you. I did wrong, perhaps, but that is past—it is buried—let it be forgotten.

Rock River was a beautiful country. I liked my towns, my cornfields and the home of my people. I fought for it. It is now yours. Keep it as we did— it will produce you good crops.

I thank the Great Spirit that I am now friendly with my white brethren. We are here together, we have eaten together; we are friends; it is his wish and mine. I thank you for your friendship.

I was once a great warrior; I am now poor. Keokuk has been the cause of my present situation; but I do not attach blame to him. I am now old. I have looked upon the Mississippi since I have been a child. I love the great river. I have dwelt upon its banks from the time I was an infant. I look upon it now. I shake hands with you, and as it is my wish, I hope you are my friends.

— --Address by Black Hawk, July 4, 1838, at Fort Madison.

84.5 - Shoeless Joe Jackson - Baseball

Joseph Jefferson Jackson (July 16, 1887 December 5, 1951), nicknamed "Shoeless Joe", was an American star outfielder who played Major League Baseball (MLB) in the early 1900s. He is remembered for his performance on the field and for his alleged association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series. As a result of Jackson's association with the scandal, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Major League Baseball's first commissioner, banned Jackson from playing after the 1920 season despite exceptional play in the 1919 World Series, leading both teams in several statistical categories and setting a World Series record with 12 base hits. Since then, Jackson's guilt has been fiercely debated with new accounts claiming his innocence urging Major League Baseball to reconsider his banishment. As a result of the scandal, Jackson's career was abruptly halted in his prime, ensuring him a place in baseball lore.

Jackson played for three Major League teams during his 12-year career. He spent 19081909 as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics and 1910 with the minor league New Orleans Pelicans before joining the Cleveland Naps at the end of the 1910 season. He remained in Cleveland through the first part of 1915; he played the remainder of the 1915 season through 1920 with the Chicago White Sox.

Jackson, who played left field for most of his career, currently has the third-highest career batting average in major league history. In 1911, Jackson hit for a .408 average. It is still the sixth-highest single-season total since 1901, which marked the beginning of the modern era for the sport. His average that year also set the record for batting average in a single season by a rookie.[1] Babe Ruth said that he modeled his hitting technique after Jackson's.[2]

Jackson still holds the Indians and White Sox franchise records for both triples in a season and career batting average. In 1999, he ranked number 35 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. The fans voted him as the 12th-best outfielder of all-time. He also ranks 33rd on the all-time list for non-pitchers according to the win shares formula developed by Bill James.

Guess so.

85.6 - Osceola - Native American

Osceola (1804 – January 30, 1838), born as Billy Powell, became an influential leader of the Seminole in Florida. Of a mixed parentage including Creek, Scots-Irish, African American, and English; his mother raised him as a Creek by custom under the tribe's matrilineal kinship system. When he was a child, they migrated to Florida with other Red Stick refugees after their defeat in 1814 in the Creek Wars.
In 1836, Osceola led a small group of warriors in the Seminole resistance during the Second Seminole War, when the United States tried to remove the tribe from their lands in Florida. He became an adviser to Micanopy, the principal chief of the Seminole from 1825 to 1849.[1] Osceola led the Seminole resistance to removal until he was captured on October 21, 1837, by deception, under a flag of truce,[2] when he went to a meeting spot near Fort Peyton for peace talks.[3] He was imprisoned first at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, then transported to Fort Moultrie in Charleston, South Carolina, where he died a few months later of causes reported as an internal infection or malaria. Because of his renown, Osceola attracted visitors in prison there as well as portrait painters, including George Catlin, who painted perhaps the most well-known image of the Seminole leader.

W.E.B. Dubois - Social Scientist.

A sociologist, historian, author, activist, and the first African American to receive a Ph.D from Harvard University, Du Bois was a busy man. Many of his writings, especially The Philadelphia Negro and The Souls of Black Folk are viewed as seminal texts in the history of sociology. His works mark the first time racial prejudice was sighted as the cause of subpar living conditions for African Americans, a radical notion at the time.

His essay collection The Souls of Black Folk examined race issues in the southern United States, introduced the idea of double-consciousness, and was noted as an influence on later civil rights leaders. His Magnum Opus Black Reconstruction in America explored the failures of reconstruction, the rise of Jim Crow, and racial politics. When not writing and teaching he found time to cofound the NAACP. An overview of his ideas can be seen here.

85.4 - Red Cloud - Native American

Perhaps one of the most capable warriors from the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) tribesmen ever faced by the US military, Makhpiya Luta, his Sioux name, led his people in what is known as Red Clouds War. This battle was for the rights to the area known as Powder River Country in Northern Wyoming and Southern Montana. Eventually he led his people during their time on reservation.

86.1 Donner Party - Pioneer/Settler

The Donner Party, or DonnerReed Party, was a group of American pioneers who set out for California in a wagon train in May 1846. They were delayed by a series of mishaps and mistakes, and spent the winter of 184647 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada. Some of the pioneers resorted to cannibalism to survive.

The journey west usually took between four and six months, but the Donner Party was slowed by following a new route called Hastings Cutoff, which crossed Utah's Wasatch Mountains and Great Salt Lake Desert. The rugged terrain and difficulties encountered while traveling along the Humboldt River in present-day Nevada resulted in the loss of many cattle and wagons, and caused splits within the group.

By the beginning of November 1846, the settlers had reached the Sierra Nevada where they became trapped by an early, heavy snowfall near Truckee (now Donner) Lake, high in the mountains. Their food supplies ran extremely low and, in mid-December, some of the group set out on foot to obtain help. Rescuers from California attempted to reach the settlers, but the first relief party did not arrive until the middle of February 1847, almost four months after the wagon train had become trapped. Of the 87 members of the party, 48 survived to reach California, many of them having eaten the dead for survival.

Historians have described the episode as one of the most bizarre and spectacular tragedies in Californian history and western-US migration.

Yeah, I originally had them as Fail but changed them to Pioneer/Explorer at the last minute. The more I thought about it I just couldn't consider the whole party a failure. Some of them succeeded.

86.3 - Smokey Robinson - Songwriter

"Smokey Robinson was like God in our eyes," Paul McCartney once said. The melodic and lyrical genius behind Motown's greatest hits is the most influential and innovative R&B tunesmith of all time. Robinson was an elegant, delicate singer and poetic writer whose songs brought new levels of nuance to the Top 40. The son of a truck driver raised in what he called "the suave part of the slums," Robinson had his first hit in 1960 with the Miracles' "Shop Around" and went onto pen the Temptations' "My Girl" and "Get Ready," Mary Wells' "My Guy," the Marvelettes' "Don't Mess With Bill," Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" and many more. With the Miracles, he had his hand in more than a dozen Top 20 hits (including "The Tracks of My Tears" and "I Second That Emotion"), songs that describe heartbreak with stunning turns of phrase: "Sweetness was only heartache's camouflage/The love I saw in you was just a mirage," he rhymed in 1967. Though Bob Dylan's famous quote calling Smokey "the greatest living poet" might actually be apocryphal, everyone believed it for decades because the songs backed it up perfectly. "My theory of writing is to write a song that has a complete idea and tells a story in the time allotted for a record," he told Rolling Stone in 1968. "It has to be something that really means something, not just a bunch of words on music."

86.5 - D!ck Butkus - football

Richard Marvin Butkus (born December 9, 1942) is a former American football player, sports commentator, and actor. He played professional football as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) from 1965 to 1973. Through nine NFL seasons he was invited to eight Pro Bowls, named a first-team All-Pro six times, and was twice recognized by his peers as the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. Renowned as a fierce tackler and for the relentless effort with which he played, Butkus is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most intimidating linebackers in pro football history.

87.4 - Lizzie Borden - Criminal

Lizzie Andrew Borden[1] (July 19, 1860 June 1, 1927) was an American woman who is best known for being the main suspect in the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Borden was tried and acquitted of the murders.

The case was a cause célèbre throughout the United States. Following her release from prison, where she was held during the trial, Lizzie chose to remain a resident of Fall River despite facing ostracism from the other residents. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts elected not to charge anyone else with the murder of Andrew and Abby Borden, and speculation about the crimes still continues more than 120 years later.

Lizzie herself. Although acquitted at trial, she remains the prime suspect. One writer has proposed that she committed the murders while in a fugue state.[41] Another prominent theory suggests that Lizzie was physically and sexually abused by her father.[42][43] There is little evidence to support this, but incest is not a topic that would have been discussed at the time, and the type of methods for collecting physical evidence would have been quite different in 1892.

Lizzie Borden took an axe

She gave her mother forty whacks

Before she knew what she had done

She have her father forty-one
