They're Back: Millions Of Cicadas Expected To Emerge This Year

Recommended Posts

Trump!!!!

Quote

In parts of southwestern Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia, it's nearly time for a brood of the insects to emerge for their once-in-17-year mating season. As many as 1.5 million cicadas could emerge per acre. And did we mention the bugs are known for their distinct — and overwhelming — chirping?

Don't these come back every year?  I thought they are staggered on different hibernation cycles so that we get them annually, but only the ones that happened to go to sleep 17 years ago.

They do come to the surface every year, but the majority come out during the same 17 year cycle. I was reading how different regions are on separate 17 year major release cycles. I know it hasn't been 17 years here in IL. The last major surfacing was probably 13 years ago

Like I said there are different regions, so there are multiple 13 and 17 year cycles throughout the country. In 2014 Western IL had a brood come up to the surface. We didn't get it in Eastern Il.

I remember it more vividly because we had a guy working with us who was terrified of them. So of course when his hood was down and he was welding (we were outside) we would put cicadas all over him.  At least once someone scooped a bunch into a bucket, opened his truck door, and flung them all over him. He screamed which made it that much funnier.

Biden is busy scheduling to speak to the millions of cicadas in hopes of getting their vote.
