I see what you are saying, and I think in the last decade it is "talked about" more, but I guess what I am saying is that while that is good, it's:  

1.  usually not constructive and offering solutions

I watch my wife deal with this all the time.  Struggled greatly for years as they tweaked a redid meds.  Still gets asked by her boss why she can't just be happier sometimes, things like that.  There is 0 patience or acceptance of mental illness at her clinic she works at (and others in the past).  It's just reality.   

Yes, I think we are starting to "talk" about it more and more, but we have a loooong way to go.

I don't really exercise a ton although am active.

Once in a while I get a dose of anxiety or frustration.    You know what helps? Exercise.   

Yet we are the fattest and unhappiest we have ever been as a society.   Imagine that.  But God forbid recommending exercise to a kid with depression.    It could be fat shaming.

Look around, man.   it's not just the kids.  I go to the park with my kid and all the parents are staring at their phones while their kids are running around.   I go to a concert, and 1/2 the people around me are on their phones.   Nobody talks about it because they are also buried in their phones, not enjoying what they are doing, and worried more about who is liking the pic they just uploaded than they are the people who are with them.  It's bonkers.  

But, I am turning into a grumpy old fart.  I think this 24/7 tech and Social media are destroying us.

Keep in perspective that it could be because it's once in awhile too.   I know people where that level of anxiety is a daily thing.  

Don't get me wrong, I joke a bit that a lot would be helped with more weed, sex, exercise, and general real human interaction.    I think a good dose of those things would help a lot of people, but it's not going to help everybody and people who are still struggling a lot are out there.   BUT maybe if we got better at some of the other things and got off our devises and enjoyed life, there would be less people in the pipeline and the ones who need it after that get better and quicker care.

There is certainly a segment of people who are perpetually sad.   They need pills they improve their life.  

There is also a segment who may get anxiety or depressed on occasion.   Which is life, you know.  Yet opt for pills becauee popping a xanex and becoming a zombie is easier than attacking the actually issue.  Many of these people abuse them.   Pop benzos while drinking.  (Which is very bad)  

Then there is a segment who don't need them at all but get on them for recreational purposes or to sell them.

I don't even drink coffee.  I don't take medicine when I get a cold.  

All my sad sh1t happened before 25. Since 25 I haven't had a damn thing to be sad about. It helps to live life without being capable of love. Sure I love my son and my pets, but that is unconditional.

I was put on low dose blood pressure meds at 19.  I was walking around campus between classes 1 day and got extremely dizzy.  I would never go to the nurse in a million years but felt like I was going to pass out.   She checked my BP.  175/110. Insane.  She asks if I have any big test coming up or something I said no.  I get to my doctor and he checks me over a bit.  Still fairly high but not as high.  Welp we are putting you on BP meds.  But Doc I am 19? Will I have to be on these forever?  Yea probably.    Have a good day.  

Took them for 10 years or so.  About 5 years ago my meds got recalled from China.  May cause cancer.  Oh cool.  So need to switch brands.  No problem.   Get new pills some time goes by and what do you know recalled, may cause cancer.  I said forget it.  Maybe I don't nerd this crap.  Quit taking them.  Started checking my BP.  I am basically 130/85. Thats fine.  Never needed to be on pills.  Imagine that.

I agree with both of these. I’d add to it the stress of the modern day world where we’re all expected to do so much, and on demand. Things used to be much simpler.

I’d also add to that the severity of issues facing the world and it’s youth today, or at least the perceived severity. Mass shootings everywhere, global warming will destroy the entire planet, the former president tried to overthrow democracy, etc. I mean there’s been the threat of nuclear Holocaust out there for 80 years so it’s not that this is necessarily new, but it has seemed to have gotten worse, or at least the news has made it seem much worse.

I’m curious though, why are you blaming the victims here? It seems to me like the last couple generations failed today's youth, and yet you blame the youth for their plight? You’ve got that part all backwards imo. They’re just kids reacting to the world that’s been created for them

I'm not just talking about kids.  And I am not blaming people for being prescribed.   What part of those 2 quotes did I blame kids? 

I had a bestfriend in HS.  His mom was a pain pill junkie and her doctor gave her more pills than she could even get down.  Well it cultivated a norm for my friend.  He started stealing them.  He started taking them.  Then he got hooked on said pills.  Totally the mom's fault.  

Benzos like pain pills of yesterday have become too normal.  People carry their benzo bottle around like it is a pack of gum.  Any stress at all and start popping xanex.  Need it all times just in case anything whatsoever causes any stress.

That too.  She had a real quack doctor.  Back then pain pills were like penny candy.  Here take handfuls.  Now they have cracked down on opioids and how many they give out.  Hence the heroin/fentanyl problem it created.   She used to literally have a "pill bag".  My friend could take 10 vicodin at a time from her stash and she was clueless because she had hundreds of pills at any time.

Would it truly have a long term positive effect on your wife's condition if people stopped asking her questions like that? Wouldn't we be kind of be proving their point for asking such dumb questions? 

Isn't the whole point of accepting mental illness that it isn't just a mood swing or reaction to what people are saying or whatever other simple explanations people like to blame it on.

I'm pointing to the cause of the problem and things, "that people don't want to talk about".  It's something you brought up.  No one wants to talk about the root of the problem.  In order to talk about the root of the problem, it's kind of obvious, that you have to look at who did it first.  When I went to school, 2 + 2 = 4.  Is that not the case any more?
