So can a pitcher not step off and call time? Are there limits on how many times they can throw to a base with runners on?

I'm going to a spring training game tomorrow; this is what I'm most interested in seeing from a game change perspective.

There’s more to it than that though. The rule also limits “disengagements,” i.e. pickoff attempts and step-offs. Pitchers are only allowed two disengagements per plate appearance. That limit is reset if any runner advances during the plate appearance. And pitchers can get away with a third pickoff attempt only if it is successful, otherwise they are charged an automatic ball.

Hopefully they will iron it out.

Batters don't really mind getting automatic strikes in spring training.

Hopefully we will have some good arguments this year. Instant replay has all but ruined that.

You go to a baseball game to enjoy and relax, you aren't there to get the game over as fast as possible...

  • Thanks 1

People like posty somehow think a pitch clock is not good for the game

It isn't...  It is a band-aid attempt to fix a game that isn't broken...

MLB and Manfred is trying to cater to the ADHD generation, but a game that ends in 2:30 compared to three hours is not going to get an influx of fans...  MLB has a huge marketing issue...

Dying breed with this thought process is why the game is broken and is being fixed,.

The game isn't broken and it's not being fixed.  Just wait until the regular season starts and the games take 2:55 and not the 2:35 you're thinking that you're going to get.

I don't care about the overall length of the game.  I just want a better pace of play.

You're not going get what you think you are, once the real games start.  Pitchers get 20 seconds between pitches... during the season, when pitchers don't have anyone on base, they generally only take an average of 20 seconds.  Sure, you'll see it slightly faster when there's someone on first base, but you're only talking about a small percetage of the time.

Here, it's a good read.  You'll see that the pitch clock won't "solve" anything.  As @posty said, you're putting a band-aid where there is no cut.

Keep in mind that the study I linked, was from 2018, before the league was using the pitchcom's.  That did more for speeding the game up than the pitch clock will.  Also, take note of second on commercial breaks.  The next time you watch a Spring Training game, time the commercial breaks.  Let me know how many you find that are more than 1 minute and 30 seconds.

@edjr said he watched a game and it was 2 hours and 36 minutes.  Last year, the average game was 3 hours and 3 minutes.  When I was watching the Pirates / Blue Jays game yesterday, the average commercial break was 1 minute and 15 seconds.  So, 9 innings... 17 commercial breaks is 21 minutes and 15 seconds during ST and at 2:42 about 46 minutes.  His 2:36 game in ST is going to be 3 hours and 1 minute during the regular season.  The pitch clock shaved a whole 2 minutes.

Like I said, once the regular season games start and players get into their comfort zones, you're going to realize that nothing really changed.  Any changes you do notice, will happen when runners are on base.  But that'll be because of the disengagement rules, not the pitch clock.

Does baseball stop or wait for commercial breaks like basketball and football do?  If they don't then commercial breaks don't mean anything.

They're no different.  Nothing is happening until they're back from commercial.

Is that actually true?  They won't throw a pitch until they're back from commercial?

Yep, just like the NFL/NBA/NHL/NCAAF/NCAAB/NCAAW/etc won't start play back up until television gets back...

I don't mind baseball wanting to speed up the game, but something that bothers me about the clock is games/outs/walks being decided because of clock violation. I've seen stats that show batters and pitchers are already getting used to it, less violations per game and the game times are shorter, so mission accomplished.  Where I really have a problem is on Strike 3/Ball 4 being called because of a time violation, that seems wrong. I don't think either team should get a free out or runner because of a time violation.  Run the clock prior to 2 strikes or 3 balls, then turn it off. Most likely everyone will already be playing at a faster pace so that last pitch won't take more time.

Hell, I'd rather see a player just tossed from the game if they start abusing the extra time on 2 strikes 3 balls than reward a team for something that happens with no ball in play.
