But in the case of Abrego Garcia, they could easily change the outcome to something that is popular with the country as a whole - having El Salvador release him from custody, even if they don’t bring him back here. I have a hard time believing Trump himself is that adamant about keeping him in jail there, to me that reeks of someone else making the decisions.

I disagree.  A reasonable person knows he could have been deported, just not to El Salvador.  If he is freed from jail in El Salvador then he can go wherever he wants, just coming back here would probably be a bad idea.
