What was the personal gain here? That the public would give him more votes in future elections if they believed that his wife died in a drunk driving accident rather than due to her own negligence? That's possible...but losing two members of his family and having his other two children seriously injured probably sufficiently played the sympathy card if that was his motive (and again there is no evidence that at the time he was deliberately lying).

He went around on the campaign trail saying it, at a time when drunk driving was a national concern for the first time. He also said it when he was addressing mothers against drunk driving. Funny, now he thinks someone shouldn’t be deported for drunk driving, not even if it’s a felony. He’s a POS and you would be wise to meekly back down on defending him as a human. There’s more.
