NCAA Hoops '23-'24

Recommended Posts

First off, congrats to the 2023 National Champ UCONN Huskies.   What a great team that made a great run.

I'm assuming this thread will die off and come back closer to fall, but would be interested to hear what everyone thinks of the impact we have now seen over the course of a couple years of NIL and the transfer portal.

I guess we should have seen the writing on the wall, but what the heck is the NBA league minimum?...

Well i looked and it's $953k per year.   A deal like this would be a game changer and would really hurt smaller schools and favor the schools with more money to offer...right?

They are going to have to make the transfer portal more restrictive somehow, I think.   It's all just kind of out of control and needs some modification, in my opinion.

I get no one really cares about college basketball in august except people like me and TarHole (is he even alive?), but it's possible this KU team could be playing against Klay Thompson and Deandre Ayton in one of the two games they have left down in Puerto Rico.  With a team that turned over about 80% of the roster and is still likely pre-season #1, you can't ask for better pre-season experience and it's fun to see them potentially compete against NBA all-star level talent.

Schedule is out, and there's a stretch for KU that'll be brutal for KU with games against Houston, Baylor and Texas all in a row.

With that said, I sent @Pimpadeaux an invite for him and the misses to visit historic AFH this year to see us whoop some Houston Cougars, but that offer would stand for most of you who have been cool over the years.  If you ever do want to check an item off a bucket list, let me know and I will make it right for you and worth your time and effort.  Lots of cool stuff to see not far away in KC too like the WWII museum, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the BBQ.  I've got four tickets to all these that I'm now working on which ones I'll go to and which ones I'll be offloading...

@Burt you in for Texass? @bostonlager , u a cincy fan? Who is our resident mormon?

Sat. Jan. 6th 1:00 pm vs TCU

Sat. Jan. 13th 1:00 pm vs Oklahoma

Mon. Jan. 22nd 8:00 pm vs Cincinnati

Tue. Jan. 30th 8:00 pm vs Oklahoma State

Sat. Feb. 3rd 3:00 pm vs Houston

Sat. Feb. 10th 5:00 pm vs Baylor

Sat. Feb. 24th 7:00 pm vs Texas

Tue. Feb. 27th 7:00 pm vs BYU

I will root for the Bearcats, but not a big enough fan to leave frigid Ohio in January to go to frigid Missouri. Let me me know when the Reds come to town, preferably in May-July.

Ran into Head Coach Bill Self this week.   Went to my first Late Nite in the Phog.   During the wimmen's practice (mostly B's), I asked if he wanted I go check the team store.   Head down some stairs, light traffic in the hallways and as we're walking, out of a doorway I see coach motioning over to the only two in the area, a young boy and his dad. My mouth drops, I point at my 16 yr old boy and he smiles and nods and my son got his picture with coach. One of those where you just happen to be in the right place at the right time.   It was pretty focking cool.

All pointless as UConn will be repeating as champs.

I've got a friend who is a UCONN fan flying in with his son and using a couple of my tickets for the KU game.   That should be a great one.

So you mean after the NCAA cleared DeSousa and said he could play, we should have expected to have to vacate wins in games that said he could play in? Or after they admitted ku officials had no knowledge of what had been happening?

Who cares,  Bill is about to run sh1t these next several years in college basketball.

Looking forward to the women's game this year...  Should be a fun year...

Defending champs LSU with transfer Hailey Van Lith, UConn with a healthy Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, Iowa with Caitlin Clark, and teams like South Carolina, UCLA, Virginia Tech and others...  It is great to see more than one or two teams contending every year...

@Hawkeye21:  What do you think about this upcoming season?

I'm excited for it.  I really enjoyed watching last year.  The Hawks should be pretty good again but need some other players to step up.  LSU is going to be hard to stop.  Lots of great talent out there this year.

Agreed...  Should be a fun season for sure...  I know a lot here won't care because there is no dunking and it is slower than the men's game, but I would rather watch this with team work then all the iso crap and one-and-done players...

I'm close enough to Iowa city and my father in law is a Hawkeye alum, but looking at trying to get tickets they are sold out all year long I believe

Two really great games last night on ESPN2 that I am sure that a large majority of you missed...

(18) Florida State beat (11) Tennessee, 92-91
(3) Iowa beat (8) Virginia Tech, 80-76

Caitlin Clark scored 44...  She did put up a lot of shots, but that is going to be Iowa this year, until someone else is able to step up consistently...

Anyone remember the few years where after MNF, they had games consistently, throughout the night from 10 pm all the way up until these premiere matchups tipped off?  So you could basically stay up all night watching basketball if you wanted to.  Obviously not as many people cared about it as I did, because it isn't a thing any more.

Still here.   Still a Duke Fan.

You got season tickets? I'll do a swap for two when ku and Duke decide to do a home/ away split in back to back years.  I'd love to visit cameron.

I live in CO.  No season tix.  Not sure how many of these even exist.  I think they try to fill up mostly with students but dunno.  Two good games tonight.  Thought Kentucky was gonna get you guys but they choked down the stretch and couldn't hit a shot.  And that big dude you got dominated them.

It's going to be a fun season, as we have the most experienced and talented 1-4 in the country.   5 is icy and we lack any depth, so hopefully some of these freshman start to figure it out.   Fun to watch this team play some real talent though.   Kentucky inexperience got them and they had some bigs out, so they should be a team to reckon with down the stretch.   And nice rebound for Duke after the Arizona loss.
