"Trying hard at what?  Farming is nothing extraordinary.  It'd done across the world and doesn't take a genius as evidenced by farmers overwhelmingly voting for Trump.

The vast majority of advances in seeds and pesticides came from liberal scientist and engineers.  To dispute this is disingenuous.

But even with all that liberal help, red areas still only produce a meager percentage of our GDP.

How High Tech Is Transforming One of the Oldest Jobs: Farming

....Of all the out-of-the-box products a Silicon Valley tech start-up could offer, Bear Flag Robotics may be delivering the most unexpected: plowed fields....The company is developing autonomous tractors, a goal that equipment companies like Case IH, John Deere and Kubota are chasing as well. But the business model of Bear Flag, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has a twist — it does not build the tractors. Instead, it adapts the sensors and actuators needed for driverless plowing to existing tractors produced by major manufacturers.... the digital evolution of agriculture is already a fact of life on farms across the United States. Auto-steer systems, which use GPS receivers to keep rows straight and avoid gaps or overlap, are available for equipment ranging from tractors to harvest combines to sprayers with 100-foot-wide booms. Precision seeders and fertilizer systems can be satellite guided to accuracy of an inch or less....

....Tractors equipped with Bear Flag technology are able to work fields around the clock.... using sensors similar to those in autonomous road vehicles under development: lidar, radar and digital video....The sensory devices provide more than what Mr. Cafiero calls situational awareness, vital for safe operation where workers and livestock may be nearby, also collecting data on the land to improve efficiency. While Bear Flag pursues expanding capabilities to tasks like planting and spraying.... it also plans to expand to the labor-intensive harvest duties of crops including tree nuts and row crops....

.....The drive to increase productivity is urgent in all phases of agriculture. Feeding a world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 faces dire challenges, according to the summary of a United Nations report released in August. The effects of climate change — extreme weather, soil loss, migration pressures — will strain land and water resources, potentially disrupting food supplies.....Humans are not becoming obsolete on the farm by any means, a point that Mr. Clayton, raised on a New Zealand sheep farm, is sensitive to. “We make recommendations,” he said. “We don’t want to be in the business of full automation.”....IBM’s intent, rather, is to provide farmers with a dashboard of controls. A farmer inspecting field conditions can take an image from a smartphone or iPad, automatically uploaded to the decision platform, to diagnose crop health. The system provides a quick analysis and suggested remedy, sort of a WebMD service for crops. The longer-term goal is to deliver real-time growing advice; partnerships with equipment makers also hold the potential to make better use of sensors, equipment monitoring and drones to make remote inspections less labor-intensive....

.....a recent convention of the National FFA Organization (what used to be called the Future Farmers of America) devoted display space to its FFA Blue 365 initiative, an online educational platform, and tech advances in areas that include beekeeping and autonomous vehicles.....A focus of the organization, which has 700,000 members of mainly high-school age, is to prepare them for the coming transformation in agriculture, according to Blaze Currie, a senior team leader for the FFA. But the goal is not so much to promote the changes as to teach the mechanisms to accomplish efficiency advances like remote monitoring of an irrigation system....“When innovations are introduced on the farm, it’s often the younger generation of operator who gets handed the new technology....”

Dr. Norman Borlaug: He Saved A Billion Lives

....Could there be a man alive today who is virtually unknown to the vast majority of Americans yet is described by those who know his work and accomplishments as "the greatest human being who ever lived"? So it is for Dr. Norman Borlaug....As the result of multiple appeals to Congress by his friends and colleagues, yesterday at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, President Bush and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bestowed upon Dr. Borlaug the highest civilian honor: the Congressional Gold Medal....Dr. Borlaug has already received the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, being one of only five people in history to achieve all three of these honors...

....In his early career, Dr. Borlaug worked with the Mexican government (and the Rockefeller Foundation) on plant breeding, plant pathology, soil science and cereal technology--efforts aimed at expanding the food supply. Over the course of twenty years, he was successful in developing high-yield, disease-resistant wheat. The results were spectacular: Mexico evolved from a wheat importer to a net exporter by 1963. Between 1965 and 1970, Dr. Borlaug 's work nearly doubled wheat production in Pakistan and India, saving millions from starvation. These examples of dramatic increases in crop yields in countries around the world became known as the" Green Revolution" -- and through his work, Dr. Borlaug is credited with saving over one billion people from starvation.....

...We all should be grateful that Dr. Norman Borlaug, father of the Green Revolution, will be honored this week for feeding the world -- or, as Norman more modestly puts it, for orchestrating "a temporary success in man's war against hunger and deprivation."

https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/05/07/dr-norman-borlaug-he-saved-billion-lives-14773

The man who saved a billion lives

.... his unparalleled contributions in using science to feed the world, Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977), the Public Welfare Medal (2002) by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Medal of Science (2005), and the Congressional Gold Medal (2007). In 2014 a statue of him was placed in the National Statuary Hall of the United States Congress; he is the sole scientist represented there.....Borlaug also received more than 50 honorary degrees, was inducted into the collegiate National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and helped introduce Little League baseball in Mexico. And just last month, at the “9 Billion and Counting” conference on campus, he was lauded as being “the single greatest graduate of a land-grant institution.”

Beyond all the accolades, Borlaug was a plant pathologist/breeder, a teacher of scientists, a scientific collaborator, and a team builder. His unique teaching and training methods for young scientists became part of the template for a series of global crop improvement centers that undergird the world’s food supply to this day....Norman Borlaug's scientific mind and hard work saved millions of people around the world from starvation. Many say that no single person did as much as the Cresco native to alleviate hunger....At the time of his death Borlaug was one of just five people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. The others: the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Elie Wiesel and Nelson Mandela.

“Thanks to Dr. Borlaug’s pioneering work to develop varieties of high-yielding wheat, countless millions of men, women and children, who will never know his name, will never go to bed hungry,” former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said in 2007 when Borlaug received the Congressional Gold Medal....“Dr. Borlaug’s scientific breakthroughs have eased needless suffering and saved countless lives (and) have been an inspiration to new generations across the globe who have taken up the fight against hunger.”

....Borlaug attended a one-room school near his farm home, with one teacher instructing him through the eighth grade....Borlaug attended Cresco High School, graduating in 1932. He went to the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry in 1937....After working in Idaho and Massachusetts on forestry projects, he returned to the university and earned his doctorate in 1941 in plant pathology....From 1941 to 1944, Borlaug was a plant pathologist for DuPont in Wilmington, Del. But in October 1944, he went to Mexico to work at the Rockefeller Foundation’s International Wheat and Maize Improvement Center.

There, Borlaug worked on developing wheat with a sturdy, short stalk that could hold the high-yielding grain on top. He also built resistance to a fungal disease called “wheat stem rust” into the “miracle wheat.”...Borlaug’s success earned him a new nickname: “the apostle of wheat.”

“I can’t be despondent, I have to be optimistic,” he said. “Pessimism has no place in action.”

It's almost like you've provided my point that all the advancements in farming are due to the education based research and development from liberals in the sciences and academia.

If conservatives were all we had in this country farmers would still be farming with horses and slaves.

Are you talking about just book smarts?  If so then they would be on the lower end.  They don't need to be book smart for what they do though.  They didn't need to go to college because they worked every day.  To say they are not smart is very ignorant though.

It's almost like conservatives just don't like any blacks for some reason...I wonder why that is...hard to put my finger on the root cause...

You think a bigly majority of blacks commit violent crimes?  Or are you just letting the very small percentage that does color your entire view of the people?

Of course it's the later.  You conservatives are in general racist dbags who hate non-whites.  You don't care that very very few folks actually are violent, you just apply your racism to the whole group.  Because you're all small minded, uneducated, racist deplorables.

13% if the population commits 56% of violent crimes in this country. It's in their blood.

I am suggesting that for those who are unhappy here. I also think we should remove them against their will if they are whiny and don't want to go.

I also think you should be removed.

What if the ones doing the violent crime are happy here?  Should we remove the violent whites, hispanics, asians, etc too?

Or are we just removing the non-whites in your little racist scenario?
