Fascist attacks on Individuals and Speech

Recommended Posts

When we were a proper country there was the issue of the anti-islamist video about Mohammed’s life. I was against taking it down off youtube. Later there was discussion about AQ/ISIS recruiting Americans & westerners on twitter & Facebook & I was all for monitoring that & the Feds asking for help from companies for that. Then there was the issue of Russia, China, Iran & NK spreading disinformation & misinformation online & I felt that companies should help the Feds there too.

Sounds fascist.

>>Speaking on Thursday to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I have read someplace that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily, all seven swing states,” referring to his 2024 election win.

“They give me only bad publicity, press. I mean, they’re getting a license,” Trump said, according to audio from a press gaggle provided by the White House.

“I would think maybe their license should be taken away,” Trump said.<<

The Kimmel firing has nothing to do with free speech, it is about free market.

Let’s say Kimmel wasn’t fired. Or let’s say the firing had nothing to do with Carr. Or let’s say it’s 10 years from now with a president of another party. Let’s say it’s not him. Is it ever all right for an FCC Chair to threaten a broadcaster’s license for providing content that mocks or criticizes the president?

Let’s be clear about what happened to Jimmy Kimmel

>During a Wednesday podcast appearance, FCC head Brendan Carr threatened to revoke the broadcasting licenses of any stations that continued to air Kimmel’s content.

“It’s time for them to step and say this garbage…isn’t something that we think serves the needs of our local communities,” he said.

Carr’s threat should have been toothless. The FCC is prohibited by law from employing “the power of censorship” or interfering “with the right of free speech.” There is a very narrow and rarely used exception for “news distortion,” in which a broadcast news outlet knowingly airs false reports. What Kimmel did — an offhand comment based on weak evidence — is extremely different from creating a news report with the intent to deceive.

But months before the shooting, Carr had begun investigating complaints under this exception against ABC and CBS stations, specifically allegations of anti-conservative bias. Stations had to take Carr’s threat seriously — even though Carr himself had declared (in a 2024 tweet) that “the First Amendment prohibits government officials from coercing private parties into suppressing protected speech.”

Hours after Carr’s Wednesday threat, Nexstar — the largest owner of local stations in America — suddenly decided that Kimmel’s comments from two nights ago were unacceptable. Nexstar, it should be noted, is currently attempting to purchase one of its major rivals for $6.2 billion — a merger that would require express FCC approval.<<

>>President Donald Trump said he is designating the far-left anti-fascism movement Antifa as a terrorist organization, announcing the move on his Truth Social platform in the early hours of Thursday morning UK time.

It wasn’t immediately clear what mechanism Trump would use to make the designation, and Antifa lacks centralized structure or defined leadership, making it unclear who or what precisely would be targeted.

“… I am designating … AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” Trump wrote. “I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices.<<

>>But Antifa, short for anti-fascists, is not a structured group, but rather, a more nebulous social movement. And while it is illegal to provide “material support” to groups designated by the government as foreign terrorist organizations, there is not an analogous law for domestic groups.<<

>>Trump also said he’d been discussing with Attorney General Pam Bondi the prospect of bringing racketeering charges against left-wing groups that he claimed were funding left-wing agitators.

“I’ve asked Pam to look into that in terms of RICO, bringing RICO cases,” he said, adding: “They should be put in jail, what they’re doing to this country is really subversive.”<<

>>In fact, some Republicans who consider themselves defenders of unfettered speech are getting more comfortable with limiting it. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., told Semafor that “an FCC license, it’s not a right. It really is a privilege.”

“Under normal times, in normal circumstances, I tend to think that the First Amendment should always be sort of the ultimate right. And that there should be almost no checks and balances on it. I don’t feel that way anymore,” Lummis added.<<

lol.  The FBI can go after all sorts of militias and drug gangs, but antifa doesn’t have a clubhouse so they can’t be got. As if the other ones do. stFU with the nonsense.

Democrats are treasonous pigs. They should all be ousted. They have no purpose but to trash this country. Deport all of them.

Kimmel was canceled for the lies he told about the Kirk assassination not things he said about Trump. He has been mocking Trump for eight years yet he is mysteriously canceled for that reason after he made outrageous allegations about the Charlie Kirk assassination? You can try to change the narrative but the facts remain the same, it was the blatant lies he told about the Kirk assassination.

When ABC canceled Roseanne it was a business decision, even though she had a hit show. Right?

He said the assassin was MAGA And the MAGA crowd was trying to gain political points by claiming he was anything but their own. He said this two days after the assassin‘s motive had been revealed, the inscriptions on the bullet casings were shown, Etc.

60 TV affiliates immediately, said they were dropping Kimmel and in the aftermath of public outrage Disney decided to suspend Kimmel indefinitely. The free market at work!

you don’t seem to understand that you are in the minority in this country and the majority of your protesters are paid.

ok, I do disagree though. What he said was "maga is doing everything they can to say he is not one of them". to me, that was maga saying the kid was a lefty, he was trans, he was pro palestine, lefty rhetoric made him do it, etc., as in anything but maga. not that he was maga, but throwing everything against the wall that he wasn't them. I don't think this kids story is complete quite yet.

your 2nd paragraph is incorrect, all the way around.

thanks for the response. i have seen a few people, Carolla, Geraldo, say things like Jimmy was incorrect or he owes an apology and I did want to hear someones opinion with some more direct context.

Censorship: government action.

Free speech & free market: no government action.

With Kimmel there was government action.

The FCC Chair has been publicly threatening ABC as well as anyone else with losing their license, as has Trump.

They can't be this stupid, can they?

My only guess is that the right wing shows are gaslighting saying that Disney made the decision independently based on his comments.  That's just flat out wrong and all the receipts have been posted in this thread.

Real time corruption in action. But nothing to see here. Just POTUS determining who DOJ investigates and what they did wrong, sans evidence.

So I'm curious, if Trump doesn't fire him did he still take action against him?

Actually it’s a good point, yes the President going about threatening to indict people for what he views as their political opposition is very much action.

He WAS fired. This presents issues on any number of levels, but specifically:

  • Trump, after years of specious claims of the same treatment at the hands of Democrats, has now fully weaponized the DOJ against his "enemies." He is risking putting an important, prestigious district into turmoil for a personal vendetta.
  • Trump is dictating who gets charged by DOJ, an unprecedented violation of established law and legal norms

As of 230pm I have only seen it was a threat, but I agree, if true he is doing exactly what he complained about in terms of using the DOJ as a weapon

Siebert was notified he was going to be fired and that today was his last day. I haven't seen anything contradicting that.

And thank you for multiple respectful back-and-forths today.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Jimmy Kimmel

and of course this is a lie, everyone knew who did it and why.
