Pope calls for ban on surrogacy

Recommended Posts

I sorta agree

CNN —

Pope Francis has called for a universal ban on surrogacy, calling the practice “deplorable” in a speech in Vatican City on Monday.

“I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs,” the Pope said.

“A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract.”

Pope Francis said that he hopes that the international community will make efforts to “prohibit this practice universally.”

“At every moment of its existence, human life must be preserved and defended,” he added.

The Catholic Church has long opposed surrogacy as well in vitro fertilization because, it said, it depersonalizes conception and disposes of some embryos, which it argues is the equivalent to abortion.

Surrogacy is illegal in Italy and several other countries, while in others, like the United Kingdom, surrogacy is legal but restricted, and commercial surrogacy is outlawed. Surrogacy laws vary from state to state in the United States.

Surrogacy provides a path to parenthood for those who have struggled to conceive and same-sex couples and individuals who are unable to conceive on their own.

Though there have been longstanding ethical concerns around surrogacy, including whether the practice is exploitative.

Cause I would think life is something he would support.  I dunno.  I get the commercial pushback somewhat but this is bringing one of God's children into the world isnt it?

That's how I feel.  I understand that there are issues with fertilized eggs being destroyed, which the Church considers a form of abortion, but at a high level the parents are bringing a new life into the world.  To me it's a bit of a Sophie's Choice, picking one to live.  But it's still a net good IMO.  :dunno:

I think the Pope's point of view is very ignorant.

The mother isn't being exploited... the mother is the one initiating the surrogacy.  If the woman wants a baby but can't carry the baby, but can find someone willing to do it for her, then she should be able to.  She's not being taken advantage of... she's taking advantage of other options.  She's not the victim.

Please.  🙄  If a woman wants a child and can pay for it, let her do it.  If the other woman wants to do it, let her do it.  You have a couple who want to have a child, pay, and care for it.  There's no issue here.

“At every moment of its existence, human life must be preserved and defended,” he added.

Which is exactly what surrogacy does.

Talk about contradictions!

A. He’s talking about the woman that has to carry and give birth to the baby as the “mother.” It is unnatural to then have the baby ripped away from that person.

B. Totally disagree on your view of commercial surrogacy. Frankly I think your take is horrific. Do you not have any morals at all?

That said, for people that cannot otherwise have a baby, AND there is not commercial exploitation of the surrogate, then I am not opposed. Though I would hope other options like adoption would be examined first

LOL

A. The woman giving birth, isn't the "mother", it's a woman giving birth to someone else's child.  An agreement she made WILLINGLY.  The baby isn't being "ripped away", because it's not hers.  No one forced her to do anything.  My body my choice, right?  Or are you now against women's right to choose what they want with their body?

B. When a piece of trash leftist tells me that my take is horrific, then I know I'm in the right.  Not surprised you agree with the pope, because he's an idiot too.

If you can't have a child because one of the two parents can't CREATE a child, then adoption is perfectly acceptable, a great idea even.  If people CAN create a child but physically can't carry a child, then there's nothing wrong with asking someone if they can take on that burden.  They can freely say no, and no it is.  It's not that hard of a concept.

You have a very questionable moral compass and you’re also pretty dumb for making false assumptions about my beliefs. I am highly ambivalent on abortion and have said so on this bored time and time again
