Mostly because they kept scared people locked in their homes for a year. 

It also worked to prevent life saving cancer screenings, dying people from seeing their loved ones before they passed, kids from learning social skills, small businesses from remaining open and basically destroyed the country. 

But it kept Trump from being re-elected so it's all good.

CDC tracked both “with Covid” deaths and deaths where Covid was the underlying cause.  Pre-Omicron, 90% of “with Covid” deaths had it as the underlying cause.  If other causes of death were just being marked as Covid, we should have seen other causes go down which we didn’t.  Covid deaths were almost entirely incremental.  Thinking there were only 3k Covid deaths might be one of the dumbest things ever said on this forum.
