Safe Driving Apps

Recommended Posts

anyone opt to use them or HAVE to use them on their auto policy? I know some companies have it mandatory and others offer it optional to get additional discounts.

my question is... if I enroll in Geico's to get a 10% policy discount, is there going to be any issue if I mess with permission settings and only have it running when I want?

I use it with state farm, got the discount, used it for a while, got additional discounts based on driving.  For a few months I was not logged in and it gave me a warning.  No other drivers have it installed.

Just don't use any of the programs where they make you put a dongle in your obd2 port

I have opted into the State Farm one.  Every six months they ask for a mileage check, I'm guessing to see if I'm turning of my phone and driving hundreds of insanely reckless miles. Save me a few bucks on my issurance, so whatever.

Yes, but I was pretty much being goofy when I started it.

In my professional opinion as being an insurance adjuster for over thirty years handling claims for every type of vehicle being an adjuster and liability claims, I think it’s an important tool for any driver, no matter how much experience you have, my Lexus has it and at first I wasn’t sure I needed it. But a couple of weeks it really helped. It beeps slow, then fast, than full warning no matter which direction you’re going. Both sides view mirrors give you a small yellow light letting the driver know another driver is close to you. Again, I highly recommend them.

However, I do not believe in or trust self driving vehicles. Parallel parking is fine. But all others are going to cause accidents, injury’s, and worse, fatalities. Imagine someone tired, stoned /drunk, and preoccupied on their phones and decide they can take a quick nap. I can’t believe the  NHSTA is allowing this. Lawyers are salivating.

I would never consider that. Was just curious if I could pick and choose when to have the app running and basically only use it when I know I’ll be driving perfectly 😂

but it sounds like prolonged periods of inactivity or having permission settings off will likely result in being unenrolled and losing the discount anyway

I think you’re thinking of other kinds of driving apps

I am specifically talking about the apps offered by auto insurance companies that record your speed, miles, hard braking, etc

I don’t have a problem with that. It makes one a safer driver. They are not only protecting them,  but you also. We need safer drivers on our roads. Do you agree with that assessment? Being a defensive driver is fine. But being an aggressive driver with almost zero respect is not.

I agree that we need safer drivers. I consider myself a good driver. No accidents of any kind in the last 5 years and no at fault accidents in the last 15. Admittedly I have a tendency to get pulled over for speeding but have never been issued a ticket.

My problem with these safe driving apps from the companies themselves is that, from everything I am reading, you have to have it constantly running on your phone. If you disallow permissions or turn your device off for too long they will take you out of the program and take away the small discount they are giving you. I am also reading that if they feel you are driving more miles or they detect hard braking, or other patterns that they would associate with a higher risk driver, they will increase your premium and give you BS reasoning that it's just the category you fall into or rates rose across the industry.

I don't think something like braking hard should warrant a higher premium, just because we tend to associate that with poorer drivers. No accidents? no violations? ... tough to make a determination on someone based on a cell phone app.

I was considering it with Geico but am not going to bother. the 10% discount isn't worth even having to worry that they might raise my rates in any fashion due to app data. ... and I would never switch to a company that makes them mandatory for coverage.

Shouldn't the ultimate determination of your auto insurance be your driving record, number of claims, & whether you make prompt payments before the due date ?

This is all focking BS.

  • Thanks 1

I agree with your opinion also. It’s a thin line and your opinion to choose or not. The one thing that bothers me the most is they are able to track you and everywhere you go or have been. And they can share it with others. Government and law enforcement. If you don’t need the discounts,

Good point. Fortunately, my area hasn't got to that point yet.

What set me off was something that happened approximately 15 years ago. (American Family)

Received a letter saying because my credit score wasn't the highest possible, AF wasn't able to give me the lowest rates possible.

I went to the office the very next day and tore into the manager but good. Reminded him that I had been insuring my automobiles with him for the past 22 years, and bundling auto and homeowners insurance for the past 15, with zero claims for either, no speeding tickets, etc, & always paid my bills on time. Told him because of that, he should give me the lowest rate possible, & if the roles were reversed, I'd hang onto him like a rusty vice grip.

Thankfully, shortly thereafter, this new stipulation was dropped. I'm guessing enough people took the time to let them know what they thought of it.

I'm afraid with each passing day, there's fewer and fewer people that would take the time to do exactly that and just accept it.

Regards
