Golf Galaxy Employee Qualifies For PGA Tour Event After Downing Three Beers Before Playoff

In all likelihood, you've probably never heard the name Nick Bienz, but the Golf Galaxy employee cemented himself as a legend in the game of golf after qualifying for the PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic on Monday.

Bienz, who played collegiately at IUPUI, will play in his first Tour-sanctioned event this week in Detroit after posting a 65 at The Orchards Club in Washington, Michigan. The 65 was only good enough to get him into a five-for-four playoff, and it's what took place between the start of the playoff and him ultimately securing a spot that is worth noting.

As he was understandably nervous heading into what could turn into a life-changing playoff, Bienz sought out the bar at The Orchards Club and decided to kick back not one, but three cold beers to find that sweet spot of calming his nerves and still functioning at a high level.

"Remember how I said three beers would be a perfect amount? Well, I’m perfect," he told Ryan French of Monday Q Info.

Perfect indeed, as he was able to secure one of the four spots during the playoff.

Instead of heading into work as he was scheduled to do on Tuesday morning, Bienz elected to start preparing for Thursday's opening round at the Rocket Mortgage. That preparation undoubtedly included a few more cold beverages.

"I have to call my boss and call off work tomorrow for sure," Bienz said. "I’m supposed to be there at 7:30 in the morning [Tuesday] and I don’t think that’s going to happen."

Based on the color of the beer sitting in front of Bienz, it doesn't look like we're talking about your domestic light beer here. If he downed three IPAs that were north of 5% ABV, his qualifying is that much more impressive.

Former PGA Tour winner Bo Van Pelt is already doing his part in getting the attention of Golf Galaxy in hopes it will provide some sort of sponsorship for Bienz during the week, which certainly seems like a no-brainer.

I always thought the sweet spot was in the 8-12 beer range, but none the less, congrats to the dude.

He was drinking pints it seems. That's 4 beers actually unless they are those 14oz glasses to make it look like a pint. But I don't think so by the looks of it. And it's probably Blue Moon given the color. 5 and a half or so abv. I don't think he felt it much other than what he said. Calm the nerves level buzz.

That dude likes to drink in life.

Orchards is a tough track.   It was one of the assets owned by the company that owned the trading company i worked for. Its built on top of a natural gas storage field.

Well so much for that story

Missed the cut with a +6, cut was E.

Oh well, he had his run.  Back to Golf Galaxy to fit us old hacks with expensive clubs we don't need.  🏌️‍♂️
