A Different Topic: Nostalgia

Recommended Posts

As I just mentioned in a previous thread this will be my 31st year doing FF. Started in 1994. My first three picks were Elway, Rodney Hampton and Timmy Brown. Finished 9th in a ten team, TD only league. A family league that my aunt kept the scoring by hand after your called in your lineup. It was amazing as she won the league 5 times in about 7 years. No cheating there.

Anyway, I was curious if any of the old timer like me remember their first team? Thought it was a good topic to pass the time while we wait for the new season.

First team was 1997 and first ever draft pick was Barry Sanders #2.  Was about the only draft pick I got right as I filled my team with good players from Super Bowl contenders rather than who was a better pick from a fantasy perspective.  Took some lumps, learned my lesson, and won my first $ league the next year.

Lineup that year was Favre at QB…Eddie George & Robert Smith at RB’s…Herman Moore, Rod Smith & some rookie flyer I got late named Moss at WR’s…Ricky Dudley at TE.

I think 1998 was my first year. Took Dan Marino with the final pick out of Dolphin love and respect for The Man. And remember drafting Fred Taylor due to my Gator loyalty, even though James Stewart was the Jags starter... dang if Stewart didn't get hurt and Taylor went nuts.

I was 14 (1994), my first team had almost every Buccaneer.   I had Craig Erickson as my QB, Errict Rhett, Courtney Hawkings, Lawrence Dawsey, Horace Copeland, & Michael Husted.  It was an 8-team league... obviously, I finished in last place.

My first year in a money league was 1998.  I took this rookie with the very last pick in the draft.  Some WR out of Marshall.  Turned out pretty well.  I finished 3rd that year, 10-team league.

I’m sure Moss won a lot of folks their league in 1998.

Ours was a pretty simple scoring league with TD’s, bonus for 100+ rushing/receiving, and 300+ for passing.  I had a couple of games Moss nearly outscored my opponent by himself.

Yeah, that year was the first year of our money league.  Our scoring system was the basic one at the time for yards and TD's... just not PPR.  The guy that beat men in the semi's had Terrell Davis and Randall Cunningham. 😡  🤣

My first league was in 1988: league started in 86, they expanded to a 12 team league in 88, I was asked if I wanted to join my a buddy was one of the starters of this leagues, I’m still currently in the league, the league is aways a live in person draft league in South Lake Tahoe, also where the league originated from.

Being one of two new people, I lost the short straw trick, and with my very first pick, pick # 2 I took E Dickerson, my first wr I ever drafted was A Reed, and my first Qb was Boomer.

This league has lost owners over the years, but still going, last three season the league was a half ppr league, now starting this season going back to the roots of ff, 14 team non ppr,   This is the 8th season we have had a 14 team league.

Fun thread.

Peyton Manning, Antonio Freeman, and Marshall Faulk were my first three picks.

my first year of fantasy football, was the year after Tomlinsons rookie year.   at the time he was viewed as good, but not great.

it was a keeper league (keep 3) and I won the first pick overall.   Had everyone convinced I was gonna take Kurt Warner, but did a ton of research and decided to turn the draft on its head.

Took Marshall Faulk in the first round, priest Holmes in round 2.    everyone figured I'd go WR in round 3 but when the draft came back to me I took Tomlinson.  everyone asked why and I said, hes the best player on the board and hes young.

then in round 4 I came back and took Donovan McNabb.      The rest was history.   I didnt draft especially well at WR, but Tomlinson played superb and Priest Holmes broke out.  I had the 3 best RB in fantasy football.    I then traded Faulk to a team in need of RB and got for 2 starting WR and the rest was history.   I cleaned up.  and I got hooked.

admittedly I didnt totally know what I was doing though 2 websites seriously educated me. (one being fftoday) and I learned a lot in a short period of time.

honestly I've had good drafts and bad drafts since....  even a few great drafts, but none compared to that one.   everything I touched turned to gold.

Beginners luck?  maybe.   but I had help and fftoday was a part of that.

I brought a street and smith, I’m pretty sure that was the name to help me rank my players.  Didn’t have the net for info, scoring was calculated by the Tuesday Paper after the Monday night game.

1997 was probably my first year. I was in middle school. I ran a 10 team league that year and expanded to 12 in 1998 and was PPR.

I do know I had Moss on my 1998 team and Marshall Faulk. Possibly as a first overall pick... or maybe he was first overall in 1999. I know I had him in back to back seasons with one of them being first pick drawn 30 minutes before the draft.  Something tells me I also had Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith and Muhsin Muhammad.  Can't remember who my QB was.

I think I am most Nostalgic for the year I assembled most of the greatest show on turf, minus Bruce  or  2004 when I had Moss and Culpepper

1998 no one really new what they were doing. The first pick was Dan Marino and next 6 or 7 picks were QB. When some one broke the trend with Jerry Rice the others were like we can do that?   Our first pick was Emmitt Smith.
