Minimum wage

Recommended Posts

On Meet the Press this morning, Bernie Sanders insisted that the main reason Democrats lost is that they abandoned the working class and that begins with raising the minimum wage. He has made this argument before (his entire career in fact.)

But- you can’t raise the minimum wage without also raising prices and the cost of living. This also goes to the heart of the undocumented immigrant dilemma- they’re paid less than minimum wage which keeps our prices lower. Get rid of them, or replace them with people making minimum wage, and you raise the cost of living. And if we do what Bernie wants and raise wages on those here legally, aren’t we simply increasing demand for more people to come here illegally?

Would our society be better off without any minimum wage? How would that work?

Bernie did make the point that 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. What if anything should be done about this?

Bring in millions of illegals? You know... non-Americans? :dunno:

I think minimum wage should be tied to inflation and adjusted for cost of living, meaning it’s higher in some cities and states then in other places.

You’re right, the cost of goods will go up if we deported every undocumented illegal, which is one reason we’re not going to do it.

I like Bernie and he’s correct, but he could have made his criticisms at any point over the past 4 years.

Gee, we've NEVER had a discussion about minimum wage before, have we Tim?   Why do you feel compelled to start the same threads every couple of years?  I mean, the arguments are there and you won't agree with those opposing minimum wage any more than you did 3 years ago when we had this discussion at FBG's, so what's the purpose?

Actually I do oppose raising minimum wage. I always have. Apparently you’ve never bothered to read me on this subject.

I think it’s a topic worth discussing because it goes to the root of so many other issues. And your response here is so typical as always. You offer nothing of substance except to try and rip me. If you don’t think this is worthy of discussion why even post?

Do you believe that keeping people out of the country will raise the standard of living for those already here? If yes please explain. TIA

I agree with both things in the bolded.

The feds already calculate a COLA for SSDI and probably other things.  No reason it couldn't be used to bump the fed min wage.

On the second part, we already have that system.  The feds have a "bare" minimum, and local jurisdictions can pay more.  I certainly don't want the feds deciding local variations in min wage.  :dunno:

Why not? I think it would be relatively easy to calculate based on cost of living.

Raising the minimum wage depending on region would certainly be more fair. But it doesn’t resolve the main dilemma: if, for example, we raise the minimum wage in California, because it is so much more expensive to live here, it’s still going to likely increase prices in Colorado, and South Carolina, and everywhere else.

And even if, somehow, the price increases are limited to California, then what exactly is gained by raising the wages?

It seems to me that Bernie’s reasoning on this issue is the same that Trump has with the tariffs: they both assume that the folks hit with this will simply absorb the cost without passing it on the consumer. But that NEVER happens.

Believe me, I've made this same argument to MDC pretty much every time minimum wage comes up.

I don't mind a minimum wage, and if you are going to have one, you should adjust it for cost of living.  That being said, I also have argued that minimum wage should not enable you to buy a house and support a family of four.  Minimum wage is primarily for students and starter jobs for young people.  Maybe also retired people who just want to keep busy.

Partly because different states have different economic situations and each state should determine for itself what the minimum wage.  Similar to how each state should decide for themselves about most things.

New study reveals blue state's fast-food minimum wage hike jeopardized thousands of jobs

Yes it’s certainly a flaw in Democratic thinking. But Republicans aren’t any better,  supporting a President determined to artificially inflate prices through tariffs for no good reason. Earlier in this thread I made the connection between minimum wage and tariffs, how both rely on illogical thinking. And you can add to this the attempt to do away with undocumented workers as well.

Sadly there appears to be no leaders on either side who believe in capitalism any longer.

You're in the wrong thread.  Tariffs have nothing to do with stupid minimum wage policy.

Raising the minimum wage means that your Big Mac went from $4 to $12

It also means that people will be replaced with cheaper computers and robots.

Higher Minimum wages = $12 Big Macs and Robots!

Liberals are the most obtuse retards in the world, hence the word "LIBTARD".

Well to simpletons like you of course not. To anyone who understands the idea of a free market they’re absolutely connected (along with immigration policies as well.)

Stop hijacking the thread.  You have created threads about tariffs, that's where that belongs. Same with your endless support of illegals.

This is about the minimum wage. You do not need to spam other threads with the same repetitive gibberish.   Keep it where it belongs.

Things like this are why Joe disliked you at FBG

I’m not trying to spread fear, only facts. When the government interferes with the marketplace, prices go up. It doesn’t matter if the interference involves wages or taxes on imports or trying to control the number of existing workers or regulations.  ANY interference affects the price.

Dude I started this thread. And I made the connection from the beginning. It’s not a hijack.

Here you go:

https://www.barrons.com/articles/if-you-favor-a-minimum-wage-you-should-like-tariffs-too-1544124806

The title of this article from Barron’s (hardly a liberal source) is “If you favor a minimum wage you should like tariffs too”. It’s full of the facts you’re looking for.
