Here come the tariffs

Use your head a little.

I am assuming that you thought I was arguing that inflation was too high, and Powell cutting rates indicates that inflation is not too high.

So the problem here is that you assumed something wrong even though you won't admit it.

I assumed exactly what you wrote.  Nothing more nothing less.  If you wish to recant I’ll understand.

This is what I wrote...

"J powell said that the tariffs have added 1% to inflation so far, should be 2% but we're at 3%."

Are you going to dispute that?  Where did I say 3% was too high to allow for a cut?  I'll wait.

You know what you ment.  I don’t so I assumed.  Either way, he cut rates meaning inflation is not high regardless of the tariffs.  If they were high because of tariffs he damn sure wouldn’t have cut.  They may be higher but not too high like you seem to think.  Or am I wrong you don’t think tariffs have made inflation HIGH?

I think it's pretty clear what I meant by what I actually said...

I don't get the "Doh!" as I'm not arguing against cutting the rates.

Anyway, Powell is pretty clear as well, if you actually read the minutes...

The Committee seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at the rate of 2 percent over the longer run. Uncertainty about the economic outlook remains elevated. The Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate and judges that downside risks to employment rose in recent months.

As I said, the job risks are higher than the inflation risks.  We could also see tariffs removed at any moment, either by SCOTUS or by an emotional decision by a deeply disturbed person.  This is another reason why we should follow the constitution and have congress keep this power.

Who?  You said to get out of the markets before it's too late. That wasn't smart was it.

But when you started this thread you were badgering people who said he wasn't going to do it and just using it as leverage. You were convinced he was going to do it.

Can't have it both ways.

There are different levels of tariffs.  The higher the tariff, the worse the outcome.

You need a 3rd grade summary:

Liberation Day, huge tariffs on everyone, market tanks.

Trump taco's, market rebounds.

Trump says 90 days, then they go back up.

Trump taco's again, market does not crash because he taco'ed on a the return to liberation day tariffs.

He moves slowly with more tariffs, and the tariffs have their effect that we said they would.

Market continues to rise due to the rate cuts.

Now please shut up.

Markets reacting.

He's said tariff is the most beautiful word in the dictionary, he said we're a tariff nation, he's said we'll bring in billions of dollars and pay off the debt from tariffs.  He's now put his plan out there, at least initial plan.  But you still don't believe he will do it?

We have tariffs.  They have increased inflation.  They have slowed growth.  What is wrong?

Also, if tariffs haven't hurt US tourism enough, this certainly will...

In addition to 5 years of social media history, CBP would also require tourists to provide all phone numbers used over that period, any email addresses used in the past decade, DNA and iris scans, and the names, addresses, birthdates and birthplaces of family members Including children

What's this now? For TOURISTS?

It’s astonishing to me that so many people here continue to deny the terrible effects that the tariffs are having already. Is it willful ignorance? The need to win the partisan war even if it means rejecting reality right in front of you?

It's amazing how bad liberals are at managing their own lives. And yet they are the same people who try to tell other people how to manage their lives.

Looks like AI will be the catch-all excuse for the Trump recession.

There won’t be any excuse. Trump will not blame AI, or Biden, or anyone. He will simply insist that there is no recession, that things are better than ever, and anyone who tells you differently is lying.

He is completely divorced from reality.

If the Supreme Court overturns the tariffs, Trump will have to surrender all the billions he’s claimed to have made. On the other hand if the Supreme Court upholds the tariffs, inflation will explode: companies have been holding back in the hope that they are temporary.

If SCOTUS allows the tariffs to stand, Congress needs to act.

Either pack the court (13 seats), repeal the laws that give limited emergency tariff powers to the executive, or BOTH.

Holding back having sticker prices truthfully reflect the new amounts they are paying.

So they are losing money to help the American people. Got it.
