LIBERATION DAY: 90 day pause on all tariffs except China

The White House is big mad that Amazon is showing the tariff charges on items because they were counting on gullible supporters to never figure out that tariffs are paid by consumers, i.e. them.

Great job Trump. Focked up the world's best economy in only 100 days. If you voted for this, pat yourself on the back. We lost because of you.

Temu is doing the same thing.  Trump cries because he has been lying for years saying that China pays the tariff.

A lot of people criticized Bezos when he announced a new direction for the Washington Post editorial board a few months back, remember? They accused him of caving to Trump. But what nobody mentioned was that when he did that Bezos stated “we will stand firmly for free trade”. This has always been his position. He hates tariffs.

Canada is now getting more cars from Mexico and Japan and less from the US as a result of the tariffs.  That is manufacturing leaving the US.

Not if more (more) people in the US buy cars made in the US.

I believe that as costs rise the net effect will be less cars purchased not more.

That may or may not prove true in the future.  I was merely pointing out the potential fallacy in Gutter's statement.

Trump is terrible for America. Tariffs have been terrible for Trump. I’m enjoying his political suicide.

Recently he said that Tariffs could replace all income tax. That would be the biggest tax break ever for the rich and a huge regressive tax for the rest of us.  It's not a surprise he's such a fan of the Gilded Age.

Trump says he’ll eliminate income taxes. There’s a problem with that

President Donald Trump on Sunday night reiterated an extraordinary ambition he and members of his administration have voiced from time to time throughout his young second term: One day, Americans won’t pay any more income tax, and you’ll have Trump’s tariffs to thank for it.

“We’re going to make a lot of money, and we’re going to cut taxes for the people of this country,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One for his return from Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome. “It’ll take a little while before we do that, but we’re going to be cutting taxes, and it’s possible we’ll do a complete tax cut, because I think the tariffs will be enough to cut all of the income tax.”

No one likes paying income taxes. But any plan to replace them with tariffs as a source of government revenue would be riddled with problems.

To start, tariffs would need to be exceedingly high — significantly higher than the already historic levels at which the Trump administration has set them today.

The federal government raises about $3 trillion a year from income taxes. The United States also happens to import around $3 trillion worth of goods annually. So that means tariffs would have to be at least 100% on all imported goods for the levies to replace income taxes, said Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, in a note to investors.

But replacing all that tax revenue is not even as simple as doubling the price of everything that comes into America, Slok notes: As prices rise, demand trails off. That’s why America’s largest companies this earnings season have said that Trump’s trade policies are raising costs and leading consumers to spend less on practically everything — from airline tickets to burritos.

“The math just doesn’t add up,” said Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the Tax Foundation. “Not even close.”

The tariffs already imposed and scheduled to take effect will bring in just $170 billion in annual revenue, the Tax Foundation estimates — taking into account reduced demand for goods that higher prices would create. That’s well short of the amount of federal income taxes America brings in each year.

The challenge is that it is unclear what will happen to sales if all imported products double in price,” Slok said. “Given higher prices result in lower sales, it may require as much as 200% tariffs on all imported goods for the total tariff revenue to replace income taxes.”

One of the news stations was on this morning and they were talking about his 100 days and talking to people who still support his tariffs.

The sentiment was "I'm ok with some pain to see if it works out" or "I'm in it for the long haul to fix the economy"

He's really got these people brainwashed.

It’s a massive scam, but even beyond that if Biden made utopian promises like this he’d be called a Marxist and senile.

One of Trump’s innovations is that he took a country where people didn’t mind some others having success if they had the hope they might succeed & changed it into one where people don’t mind some pain so long as others suffer more.

According to you MAGAs, tariffs are going to lower costs and lead to a new golden age of US manufacturing.

Please keep going!

I agree with you in the sense I don’t want my country hurt. I hope we succeed in this (somehow). Problem is we already tried it in the 1930s & 1890s, & this country was partly founded on revolting against a king who dumped tariffs (taxes) on us without legislative consent. How many times do you have to hit yourself in the head with a hammer in the Hope this time it will make your headache go away?

I just wanted to point out that the bolded is pure leftism.  Given the choice of two people having one dollar, or one person having two and the other having five, the left would choose the former every time.  Equity is king, after all.

I’ve been trying to point out Trump is many ways in fact ‘leftist’. That is indeed much of his motivating message.

Sure, one is the change in attitude I just described, & you can throw in the grievance messaging where Trump is the King of all victims but so are his followers. But also, look at today, the WH Press Secretary lashing out & claiming a retail company shouldn’t reflect a tax as a tax on receipts because they’re enemy roaders. Or the President claiming the national economy is a ‘department store’ where he sets the price, which is pure central planning. And the idea that immigration, while there are obvious racist overtones, steals jobs from Americans is an old far left (socialist) canard from the 1950s-80s (& earlier) which Trump has co-opted. Or ‘we have to suffer for the future of the nation’ & it’s our patriotic duty to do so. On & on.

I did buy a Velcro ball pad set yesterday. Now I look and it’s says tax collected $ 1.33. I guess that’s it? At least it goes to the treasury. I read yesterday that the treasury is on track to borrow less.  That’s not great,  but it’s better.

Costs more though. Who’s going to tell them? Won’t be Trump. He campaigned on lower prices Day 1.

Whoops. 😂
