Court Ruling Against the AP

Recommended Posts

Court ruling lets White House ban on the Associated Press continue, for now

I have some thoughts on this one.

1) The AP is still allowed in the press room, just not for special events like in the oval etc.
2) The AP is standing by its decision to refuse to use the name Trump has legally mandated......yet....had no problem when Zelensky decided to rename Kyiv
3) The AP appears to be holding Trump to a different level of accountablity/acceptability

He only ruled against the TRO.  I suspect the AP will win this one.

Trump and/or the press secretary can always just not call on them.  :dunno:

You're seriously comparing the AP spelling of Kyiv vs Kiev to the renaming of the Gulf Of Mexico?

Just to clarify, it wasn't Zelensky that unilaterally renamed the city, it was a pre-zelensky campaign by the government aimed at asserting some independence from Russia and the Russian translated names of cities in Ukraine.

The gulf of mexico is an international body of water and its name remains Gulf of Mexico despite some stupid decree by the tiny d!cked wanna be king of America.

The AP and the media won’t win this one.  It’s a privilege - not a right - to attend various media gaggles.  On top of the AP specific action, the White House also announced yesterday that nontraditional media will start to get access to the White House unequal footing with the mainstream media.

That sound your hearing right now is the death rattle of the establishment in Washington.  The liberal crying will be fun to watch.

Couldn’t agree more. They feel as though they are the privileged ones, have not respected the office of the presidentcy, now they are paying the price for not doing so. Go sit in the corner and watch. I quit reading the newspaper years ago for this very thing. You want respect,  earn it and stop the insufferable bias and understand that your job is to inform the people and not inject yours and the party you support. Report the news. There people out there that are a lot smarter than you and are exhausted with you. And this younger generation’s want change. Looking at the numbers from the past election and how the tide is shifting. I know it’s cyclical but it’s a dramatic change.

Gee, that’s funny, I just searched “Gulf of Mexico” in Google maps and I didn’t get a hit.  I did see a large body of water named “Gulf of America” though.

Viva la Resistance!!!

Correct. The AP has no shot here. If the White House can pick who gets access, then defacto, they pick who can’t have it.

Of course I am.   In each instance you have a government decide to change the name, pretending they are different us letting the outlet off the hook.

What if....the AP.....decided it would say.....capitalize the usage of "White People" in its reporting.....and only use lower case for "black people".....I think you and I could agree that we would be in opposition to that, right?

I love how they get upset because Trump is surrounding himself with loyalists. As if Obama and Biden didn’t.

For Ukraine, it's their city, and the AP explains why they are respecting the the request.

For the Gulf of Mexico, we don't own it, we can't rename it, it's still the Gulf Of Mexico according to everyone else in the world.  But the press is supposed to call it Gulf of America because dear leader says so?

I guess you just like authoritarianism.

I don't know which is more sad.

For nearly two weeks, the Trump administration has kept AP reporters from covering major events due to the news service's unwillingness to designate the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, as Trump had decreed in an executive order on his first day in office.

What is crazy to me is that they believe they DESERVE a place on Air Force One because past presidents have allowed them to be there. That is focking insane.

Misplaced sense of entitlement is a rather American thing.....more prominent among liberals to be sure, but really across the board.

Hold on. These are not equal. In the instance of Ukraine, the sovereign Ukrainian government decided to change the spelling of one of their own cities.

In the case of Gulf of Mexico, the government of the US did no such thing. POTUS did. And he renamed a body of water that multiple nations have maritime control over. The lack of full sovereign right to the Gulf by either Mexico or the US was codified in a 1976 agreement between the two nations.

If he wanted to rename a lake that was entirely within the US, he could. He renamed Denali to Mt. McKinley, and the AP has called it Mt. McKinley.

They are equal.  Further, I am being consistent here.   I note that when just about anyone else(other than Trump) want to change a name, its all good.  From Forts...to schools...to cities in Ukraine.....but once Trump does something, the immediate move is to oppose it without thought....hence the emergence of these easily shown hypocrisy from a legacy media that has sold its soul to a political side of the isle.

You don't understand the difference between renaming something that belongs to you vs. something that does not? You're FOS. By this logic, I can rename your child. You are not this dumb, although you do appear to be this partisan. And no, you are not being consistent.

Well then that's a pretty huge lack of consistency on your part. Nobody, including the AP, is refusing to call it Ft. Bragg or Mt. McKinley. These are things that have been renamed properly because they belong to America. Now we can, and have, criticize these choices. The US doesn't own the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, nobody, including POTUS, or the Mexican gov't for that matter, can rename it without the consent of all parties involved. This is not a difficult concept.

The Gulf of Mexico was originally named over 400 years ago, and it did not refer to the nation of Mexico.  It was named after a native American city.  If Mexico doesn’t like it they can refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico, along with any other nation.  Mexico already refers to the Rio Grande river differently than we do.

The issue here is that Trump issued a legal executive order to change the name within the United States, and the AP unilaterally decided that they would not follow that legal order.

The fact that the AP accepts certain things Trump renamed but not the Gulf destroys that argument.
