Mexican 🌮 Ship carrying 200 people hits the Brooklyn Bridge as search and rescue operation underway

Recommended Posts

A massive Mexican navy tall ship making a festive visit to New York slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday — toppling one of its huge masts into the deck in a horrifying scene that left multiple crew members seriously injured, according to fire officials and sources.

A search and rescue operation was underway to pull people out of the water after one of the towering 147-foot masts on the Cuauhtémoc — which has a crew of 277 — collided with the bridge’s road deck just before 9 p.m., sources told The Post.

I just watched footage of this. It seems to me that this must be among the dumbest, most predictable/preventable accidents in human history.

The OP tells me the masts are 147 feet tall. Goggle tells me the Brooklyn Bridge is 127 feet above the water line.

As they approached the bridge, how is it that nobody on board looked up and wondered if they could fit under it? Taking five seconds to do a google search would have said "no".

They lost power.  The ship was moving backwards due to the current.  They weren't trying to go under the bridge.

That makes sense, the article I read made no mention and says the cause was under investigation.

The thing looks like (and I presumed it was) a 18th or 19th century galleon that would have been propelled by wind and sail.

DEI hires couldn't keep the power on. 😆

It was reported last night.  There was also a tug boat next to it which presumably was trying to avoid a crash.

All or almost all sailboats have an engine to get them to an area where they can raise their sails and use wind power.

The lights were on and rutters were still operable. They may of lost power but a generator was definitely on at the time. Human error was involved no matter how you slice it.

The Mexicans are messing everything up, even our bridges. My favorite part was the Muslims laughing as it was happening. Priceless

If the ship lost propulsion in an area with strong tides and strong river flow currents it would have been prudent to immediately deploy their ankors to prevent uncontrolled drift.  It is likely those anchors are on engine assisted winches and the crew may not have had procatice in deploying them manually.

Must have been a spectacular and scary ride for those up in the rigging.

I'm glad that the aging critical infrastructure was not damaged.  I'm glad more people were not hurt.  Were i the president i would take this opportunity to make magnanimous statements and gestures to Mexico, our neighbor.  I would offer any reasonable, neighborly assistance to them.  This is an opportunity.
