That time of year again: Camp injury news (Darnell Mooney, Joe Mixon)

Jets quarterback Justin Fields’ training camp practice was cut short today with an apparent lower leg injury.

Multiple reporters on the scene reported that Fields appeared to hurt his leg during team drills, limped to the sideline, and then got checked out by the team’s medical personnel.

After a short time being checked on the sideline, Fields got into the front seat of a cart and was taken back inside.

Head coach Aaron Glenn said that Fields suffered a right toe injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the initial diagnosis is a dislocated toe and that tests showed Fields did not suffer a fracture.

Glenn said that he did not know which toe Fields injured when his foot was stepped on during practice and Rapoport reports that it is not the big toe.

Fields is still being evaluated and there’s no word on whether he’ll miss any time, but the initial updates have likely soothed some of the bad feelings that Jets fans had when they first heard that Fields went down.

I think Fields has top 5 potential.  Both Glenn and Engstrand came from Detroit... they both know Fields extremely well and when out and gave him a solid deal.  I think they believe that they know how to maximize his potential.  If they're right, he's a great QB to have.  If they're wrong, I won't care too much because he'll definitely be the 2nd QB I take anyway.

As a Jets fan, I did not want him.

Hear me out... Although they signed him to a 2 year deal, my fear was a Daniel Jones type situation where Fields does just enough to trick the Jets into believing they don't need to address the QB position for the future. This team, largely as currently constructed, won 7 games with Zach Wilson and some other scrubs just 2 years ago. Better (and more stable) coaching, plus Fields ability with his legs and I could easily see him hero balling the Jets to 9-10 wins. That would be great for fans, especially if they ended their playoff drought, but it's also a situation where Woody might get enamored and even if his overall numbers are not great and he still doesn't pass the eye test as a franchise QB, the Jets might buy in.

BUT, I was starting to come around to it. Do I really think they can fix his accuracy issues? Maybe not but lets see. This is the route they went. I know he has talent, a big arm, mobility, etc. Can they turn him into a poor mans Lamar Jackson? (for the record I think Lamar is a tremendous athlete who is highly overrated as a QB)

and he was definitely on my radar for FF since there are a ton of stable QB's you can pair him with

If they fix him as a passer, he won't be a poor man's Lamar Jackson, Lamar Jackson will be a poor man's Justin Fields.  Coming out of college, Jackson was a very bad passer, Fields was very good.  Both needed coaching help.  Jackson got it... Fields never did.

I do agree with you on Jackson, which is why I said what I did, in that Fields could be better.

Great ADP, J Warren runs with first team during practice ahead of rookie K Johnson.

Ive been drafting Warren a lot very late in 12-14 team mocks.  Fantastic ADP, but with this news, that’s going to change.

Insider Info:

I am currently at Jets open training camp and Fields is on the field, jogging and throwing passes and taking some reps

Doesn’t sound good for Richardson owners.  Dimes is going to win that job easily.

Quote

Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney injured a shoulder during Thursday’s practice, and the team announced Friday night that he will miss a few weeks.

Mooney was hurt in the first training camp practice when he dove for a deep pass from Michael Penix during team work. Mooney walked off with a trainer and did not return.

He presumably underwent an MRI on his shoulder.

is that what the early cam reports are saying?   I have not yet started paying attention.  I've been in work hell so paying less attention than usual

They want Daniel jones to win the job. Everything I have read is that they have both been awful

Quote

The Texans didn’t seem to need running back Nick Chubb, when he signed a one-year deal in early June. They need him now.

Starter Joe Mixon is on the non-football injury list. Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Mixon “is expected to be out an extended period of time with a frustrating foot injury.” (Not to be confused with a non-frustrating foot injury.)

Per the report, Mixon will be evaluated again closer to the start of the season.

hardly a ringing endorsement for either player.  I suspect the first one who shows signs of a higher understanding of the offense will get the job.  it feels like this is still a toss-up.  but if they actually want Jones to win the job I guess we have to give him the edge.    That is a bit surprising.  usually teams want the guy they drafted to win the job so they really must be unhappy with Richardson.

ouch.  Hopefully it doesnt keep him out too long.   At least there is lots of time to recover.

Mixon is one of those guys who gets hurt a lot but who is productive when he does play.    If I can get him at a discount (which happens at least 50% of the time) I dont mind buying.

for me its how far does he slide and am I willing to bear the risk on this.    Admittedly I did well with him in a lot of my drafts last year but I've also been burned by him in the past too.  so I'm very strict on not overpaying for this guy.    The injury report may scare a lot of people away so I'm expecting it may be a good healthy discount for him due to the pre season injury.

Maybe I misread but I could have sworn I saw some articles saying they wanted Jones to be their starter

It’s what I’ve been seeing, I haven’t heard much about Dimes, but he’s going to win that job imo.

Tough situation for Mixon,  I would think Chubb is next up, that’s interesting imo.

As a Mixon owner I'm not really worried. Not yet anyway. He did not get a carry last preseason and looked pretty good. Plus there is roughly 6 week till week one.

hes a guy who, when I draft him I count on him missing 3-4 games.

If I do better than that I consider it a bonus.

but I will keep an eye on this injury situation with him.   Usually his injuries come in the second half after hes been dinged up for a half season.   the fact this is happening pre season is a bit more concerning than usual.

You are probably not wrong.

Late last year read a lot of reports that the team was unhappy with Richardson.    so the new reports you read likely are on the mark (or at least close to the mark)

I still love this kids potential, but there seems to be something missing thats keeping him from tying it all together.   Maybe the right move for him is to get a fresh start elsewhere.

Just a guess, but I bet a lot of the coach talk for the Colts QB starter is to throw other teams off and make them game-plan for Daniel Jones. But, then they will get Anthony Richardson in the game and surprise the opposing defenses with his rushing ability.

Teams know Richardson cannot pass the ball, and they know he can run, if he came out having success passing the ball that would be the surprise

If he could throw the ball, he'd be Jaylan Hurts.

but Hurts stuggled throwing the ball early in his career too.   so all is not lost.   Not yet anyways.

but he is running out of chances to prove he can get it done.

Game plan for Daniel Jones. haha.  I get what you mean, it's just a funny thought. Jones can make plays with his legs, so really whoever starts at QB for the Colts, opposing defenses need to be aware of that.  Richardson more so, but as someone else pointed out it's pretty much all he can do.
